Best I've used

I've owned a number of fins, including similar full blade, split and hingled but this is the fin I like best. Decided to try it after watching videos of sidemount divers using the same brand, next grade up. Sidemount divers tend to be cave divers and need power and efficiency. I really like the power of the fin, I trim well with it, and it is an excellent fit to my Henderson 5 mil boots. I have a 8.5 shoe size (male) and got the recommended size, small. Great fins!

By Jennifer C.

from Boston, MA, US

I have flat feet and need to be very conscientious of my choice in fins due to foot cramping. I took these fins to Bonaire because I needed to wear thick soled dive booties and they did not disappoint. My dive buddy often had to tell me to slow down, as these propelled me faster than my usual split fins. They also did not cause foot or leg cramps. Though I could feel my multiple days of diving in my calves, I don't attribute this to these fins as 4 dives a day, often needing to swim a mile or so out to a buoy was likely the real cause. They are rigid but not impossible to bend, are lighter weight, and fit nicely into a small suitcase. They are a great price for a fantastic pair of fins. Very happy with this purchase.

Mares Avanti X3 open heel fins

By Joewhit

These fins are perfect for scuba with boots. They can also be used for snorkeling. The sizing is just about right on. They are comfortable and pretty efficient. They bend just enough to not give leg or foot cramps.

Made to last, comfortable to use.

As promised, something that has performed well beyond expectations. Initially I trusted the dive shop employee who sold my first and only set of fins. They were bought in at a shop in Jacksonville. The cost was about $125, although a quick search on LeisurePro list them for way less. They were purchased right before doing the PADI Rescue course. Approximately 12 years later and over 5000 dives they are still going strong. Now that's value, and no warranty required. There is a Mares dealer here in West-End who sells these and newer versions of the fins but the only thing that has been replaced is the straps. When the weather gets nasty on the north side we dive the south. At times we do shore dive in Flowers Bay over by Church Wall. That's when the open heel fins earn their money. To clarify, we carry a large variety of closed heel fins, some of which are never picked because they are simply to hard to put on and much less take off while hanging to the back of the ladder. I've tried the split fins and they definitely have less resistance and thus less stress on your knees. I'd hate to have to tow someone back to the boat against a current using split fins however. I'm just making the case that the Mares Open Heel fins are good and reliable. On a separate note, we have used a variety of close heel fins for just about all our rentals when boat diving. During that time, it is also the Mares closed heel fins which have lasted the test of time. They get the double oks from this reviewer. That's not to say I'm not going to try a different pair. Until next time, happy bubbles.

LOVE THESE FINS!!!

By Doc G.

I love these fins, even though I ordered them at least a half-size too big, (so I wear socks in my booties and they fit fine). My fault. My Dive Master/Instructor had a set of these and of all the fins I tried, I liked these the best, so I bought a set. They are the perfect balance and combination of performance and comfort. The fact that they look fantastic is just icing on the cake. (I have the yellow color). I ordered these with several other items and all were delivered EARLY, and packaged very well. Always a fantastic buying experience, and great people, thank you Leisure Pro!

Great fins!

By islanddream

I've always used split fins when diving and since we always drift dive, I thought the Mares fins would work better when swimming into the current. They worked very well and I will continue to use these when drift diving. I did have a bit of a challenge at first getting the fins off in the water while hanging onto the rope on the side of the boat. These fins have buckles on both sides of the straps and the strap doesn't detach from the fin. My other fins unbuckle and the strap detaches on one side, so that's what I was used to. However, after a couple of dives, I had no problem getting the fins off and throwing them into the boat.

Why did you choose this?
Leisure Pro Store
The decision boiled down between the Mares Quatro and these fins. I compared the length specs and the difference was negligible. The fins were for my daughter and it came down to whether it would be advantageous for her to have a three part flexible blade, or four part, and would she take advantage of the difference to justify a $30 <br /> price difference. The answer was no, so I bought the Avanti X3.
JT on Jun 27, 2019
I had these fins in the past and loved them. They move a lot of water and are great in current. They do take some getting use to when you change from a split to the Mares Avanti though. Great fin.

Mares makes the best scuba fins, period. My Tusas were good, but too tight for my wide feet. Mares sucks for some products, such as SMB's, Regs, etc, but they are the best for fins.

Are these good for snorkeling with no boots?
A shopper on Oct 5, 2011
BEST ANSWER: You will need boots for open heel fins they are all made to be worn with boots. Buy "full foot fins" if you wish to purchase no boots. If you are wanting to get serious about snorkeling often or intend to start diving, nice boots and open heel fins are a better investment, you can walk on rough terrain to and from the water with the boots on and put the fins on in the water. You also will not get your heels scraped up by the full foot fin. I own these fins and they are nice.
I wear a size 11.5 shoe what size fin should I get?
Ethan k on Jul 24, 2013
BEST ANSWER: My husbands feet are size 11. We do some ice diving so he needs to wear heavy dive boots. Most of our diving is in warm water though. So it adapts fine to either. His fins say Regular. Our son 6'4 wears the same fin his foot is close to a 12 and I looked on his fin it says X Large. He does more cold water diving with heavy dive boots. He has been diving with these fins for years, no problems at all with buckles.
I wear US 8 sized shoes and plan to use these fins with 5mm Blue Reef Ultra boots. Should I go with small or regular?
Thanks,
udorduncu on Sep 6, 2012
BEST ANSWER: I wear men's size 10 shoe and Henderson Gripper Bootie 7mm (NB65Z-10) size 10 that fits the Mares Avanti X3 size regular. My wife wears women's size 8-8.5 shoe and Henderson Gripper Bootie 7mm (NB65Z-8) size 8 that fits the Mares Avanti X3 size small. The size 8 bootie fits the size small fin nicely without being too tight or sloppy.
If I wear 9,5 shoe size with a 5mm bootie, should I buy a small size?
A shopper on Feb 10, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I assume it's a men's 9.5? With that, I'd go with a medium. I wear size 8 in a 3mm boot, and it fits just right. But check with the nice folks at LP, they may honor the test fit program (I forget what they call it) and allow returns on fins. They did on the last wetsuit I bought.
I wear a mens siz 10 shoe what size would i get?
Alan M on Feb 23, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Depends.... if you are 14-15 years old and growing like a weed, then I'd get XL and just tighten them as much as possible because if you go to 11 or especially 12, you will quickly outgrow them. If you are an adult and that's not an issue, the correct size is Large.
Teenager size 6 shoe .. What size should we buy ?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2012
BEST ANSWER: I wear a 8.5 men's and i bought a size small. I use 6mm dive boots inside the fins. I hope that helps in you decision making

I am looking into purchasing the Tusa Sport Adult Series Wailea Snorkel set for both snorkeling and for scuba diving. Are the short fins good for scuba diving? I have only used the ones that are offered at the resorts where I dive and they are always the long ones, but they do not fit me well and I am looking for something more comfortable. I like the way they fit, just wanted to see the pros and cons of short fins.

Thanks, Nicole
Nicole L on Nov 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: They are decent. Honestly for snorkeling I like the deep sea split fins. They are cheap and comfortable. Only good for snorkeling though. They don't slap off the water. If you are diving then yes. Go with the tusa
Do the X3 fins have the buckle system with the red switch in the middle or the system where you squeeze each side of the buckle to release it?
A shopper on Mar 30, 2012
BEST ANSWER: these have the red switch in the middle that locks the buckle release...i have to tell you, i don;t like how the buckle unsnaps..it's not easy. i do like the flippers but i would not purchase them again. i hope this helps.
Do these fins have the same buttons on sides that my wife has on her Mares Plana Avanti fins ?
Michael B on Jul 1, 2012
BEST ANSWER: PROBABLY THE SAME SIZE BUTTONS - THE MANUFACTURERS SEEM TO STANDARDIZE - IT MAKES SENSE. I AM NOT A MARES USER - BUT HAVE SWAPPED THE FIN STRAPS BETWEEN ARIES AND OTHER BRANDS WITHOUT A PROBLEM..
What are the dimensions of the small fin?
A shopper on Oct 28, 2011
BEST ANSWER: When I turn the fins over and measure the bottom they are 23 1/4 inches. They are large enough for me to wear with boots and are fine without. I wear a size 10 shoe. I do love them. Highly recommend. Good luck.

Hi, got a mares avanti fins size regular, but a bit too for me, anyway to get a proper fir?? get a thick boots?
Leow W on Jun 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thick dive booties might be sufficient to make the boots fit, depending on how off the fit is. I can't judge that, or recommend how many sizes you can hope to adjust via different booties. Sorry.
