a wetsuit for those who hate wetsuits

I hate wetsuits. And I hate being cold. Quite the connundrum. I hate putting then on, I hate pulling them off, I hate that feeling when you get a gush of cold water in your suit, I hate the smell of neoprene, I hate the velcro catching my hair, I hate back zips... My least favorite part about suiting up for a dive -- the wetsuit. The lavacore takes away ALL of these unpleasantries. You feel like you are putting on your favorite fleece. If it fit, I think it would have worked

I read the reviews so order a size larger than what I typically wear in clothing, it was too small. I returned the item & got another brand wetsuit which worked fine.

A must have for women who dive

By WAYNE D.

from Wilmington, NC, US

Love my new Lava Core! I had one before this one and word it diving all the time. When the water is chilly I wear it under my wet suit. In the summer I wear just it for protection because I do a lot of wreck diving. However, it protects you from jelly fish stings as well! My old one has been great but a litter faded after 5 years so I will keep it as a backup.

Awesome.

By Nili H.

It's sold as the equivalent of a 2mm. I love it. As does everyone I know that has one. It is neutral. Doesn't affect buoyancy. I add it to my 3mm and my 5mm. Makes them a 5mm and a 7mm in theory. Easy to get wet suits on and off over them too. Good luck. Very comfortable too.

lavacore

Lavacore is a great item for keeping me warm. I've been using this item for years, and it stands as one of the better quality items I've ever seen.

I Love it!

By Kristina K.

Great suit. Can be used under your normal wetsuit for extra warmth or as a thin suit in warmer water. I use it in combination with a 5mm shortie and it's great. Its so comfortable. I love the front zip which makes it easy to get into.

Great Feel

By Marciano

This suit is great for warm waters, it feels like a pyjama and folds like one too. Dries Quickly and feels great on your skin. Not as warm as a 3mm. It's amazing how Velcro destroys the fabric. Some velcro that holds the inflator on the BCD destroyed a part of the suit on my first dive.

a wetsuit for those who hate wetsuits

I hate putting then on, I hate pulling them off, I hate that feeling when you get a gush of cold water in your suit, I hate the smell of neoprene, I hate the velcro catching my hair, I hate back zips... My least favorite part about suiting up for a dive -- the wetsuit. The lavacore takes away ALL of these unpleasantries. You feel like you are putting on your favorite fleece. It's light weight and easy to put on (no matter the conditions, wet, dry, sunscreen, etc). The front zip is awesome. And the stirrups and thumb holes make it so you are snuggly in place. It's lined with a fleece and dries off quickly. It's equivilent to a 3mm. Since it is less boyant than neoprene you can use a bit less weight too. Downsides: it will turn your skin green the first few times you use it (soak it in the bath tub before you use it). But this comes off with a bit of soap and water. Best. Wetsuit. Ever.

Wife loves it!

By SFC_Swede

I had purchased a Henderson thermoprene shorty for my wife for our first Caribbean dive vacation. Because of her claustrophobia, the neck seal for her wasnt a real smart choice. The Dive Operation we were using allowed her to use the Oceanic Lavacore, and she was immediately in love with it. Her diving improved, the second she used the Lavacore, as she was no longer focused on the constricting nature of the neck seal of the Henderson. She also raved about its comfort, and ease of wear. We intend on buying one for her future Caribbean dives.

I love the quality of this product.

Crazy fit. Long and narrow, but I love it.

By Kathleen E.

from The Villages, FL, US

I love the suit. This is the second Lavacore suit I have had. I wore out the other. The fit is tough. I wear a size 8 pants, 10 top, 5'6, 150#. I ordered the 14W. The general fit is good but the body is long. The cuffs, however are very tight. I had tried the 12 but the cuffs were so tight I could not get my hands through the hole. I will put up with the slightly too long body of the suit, but I did open the cuffs wider to make getting in and out of the suit easier. Wore it the other day, still love it. Best feel ever.

Comfy and warm

Runs small order 2 sizes up

Too small

By tara

My husband is thrilled with his LavaCore and that is why I wanted one. My intention was to put it under a 3 mil for diving in Bali. It was so small that I could barely get it on. The sleeves and legs were so long that there was no sense in ordering it in a larger size. I would order this in the back zip style rather than the front zip style as it is much easier to get on and off. I had to send mine back.

Front zip important. Wife wanted non neoprene fleece lined. This one seems to fit the bill. Good price.

To be warm while swimming in outdoor pools in winter ... it never fit right: too long in torso, too short in legs, with a big pouch in the front for equipment we women don't possess!

can you tell me more about size and how to decide between say a siz 6, 8 or 10? I'm 5 ft 6 and weight 133 and am fairly trim. Hate cold water. My other wetsuit is v. unweildly and hard to put on, especially without a skin.
Plan to snorkel in water that's about 78 degrees but love warm water.
nancy s on Oct 31, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Hi Nancy -

I am 5'6" and weigh 136. I went with the size 10. Fits fine.
is it flexible enough for swimming?
A shopper on Aug 4, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Yes - It is a very soft suit that you could use for just about anything in the water. The fabric is much nicer than a typical liner & much warmer without being too heavy. Depending on where you are swimming and the type of swimming you plan to do, you might be too warm.
Hope this is helpful!
what is the ml rating on this product> 1.5? 3?
A shopper on Oct 20, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have a ton of dives on the lava core garments. I also sell it and from my experience and the way I explain it to the dealers is. You may hear people say that it is equivalent to a 3mm Wetsuit on this and other competing products. Really, what I find is that by itself, it's more like a 1.5mm wetsuit and gives you a little more, maybe 2mm when you wear it under a wetsuit. It channels the water and keeps it from exchanging so much.

also neutral buoyant in the water which makes it nice.
what is the mm on this wet suit?
Myrna N on Sep 5, 2011
BEST ANSWER: We have not yet dived with this suit----but for years we dived with a
similar suit and it was the equivanant of 3 mm. I am sure that the
Lavacore suit is also 3 mm----and was also told this by
Australian divers who were useing the suit. We are going on
our next dive trip to Wakatobi(Indonesia) with it and I am sure
it will be all we need. I really like the front zip feature as it is
very easy to put on and take off.
How much does this weigh?
Crystal A on Feb 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Crystal. My suit is all packed away in my dive stuff so I don’t have an exact weight. It’s heavier than a thin skin but considerably less than a wet suit if any kind. Less than a1 pound I suspect. Hope this helps
Is this a 3mm suit? I don't see a thickness.
Laurie F on Jul 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's sold as the equivalent of a 2mm. I love it. As does everyone I know that has one. It is neutral. Doesn't affect buoyancy. I add it to my 3mm and my 5mm. Makes them a 5mm and a 7mm in theory. Easy to get wet suits on and off over them too. Good luck.
Has anyone layered the Lavacore hooded vest under a Lavacore full suit?
A shopper on Oct 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: you can layer lavacore for extra warmth, but dot expect to get the same thermal protection as the first layer. It works by trapping extra water in the material and allowing less water exchange from between your body and suit. It does not insulate like neoprene does so layering it does not have an equal affect.
I'm looking for 11/2mil?
Judith K on Jul 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This suit would be similar thickness to a 1.5mm neoprene suit, however, it is not made of neoprene so it is not measured in mm specifically. I would describe this suit as being roughly 1.5 to 2mm in thickness while providing the warmth of 3 or 4mm
