I used the Lavacore shirt with Lavacore short pants as my base layer under a 2mm/3mm wetsuit while doing Cenote diving in Mexico late August 2017 and both worked great. I was concerned because I was told I'd need a 5mm for diving in a Cenote, but I was very comfortable with my Lavacore shirt/pants and 2mm/3mm wetsuit. I wore the Lavacore pants and shirt over my rash guard pants and shirt. I wear an XL rash guard, but I wanted the Lavacore shirt and pants to fit snug, so I ordered the Lavacore pants and shirt in a Large. It was snug, but I was able to put both on dry and take both off wet. I took the Lavacore shirt off between Cenote dives and was able to get the damp shirt back on wet.

Lavacore Short Sleeve Shirt

By Mike H.

This stuff is great for cold water. I wore the short sleeve short for a quarry dive last week. Under a 7 mil wetsuit it was great. Bottom temp at 60 feet was 46 degrees. It does a terrific job. (Just order it a little big. The sizes run small.)

Great rashguard by Lavacore!

By Cruise S.

You pretty much pay for its superb quality. It was well worth it! I have received compliments on this rash guard. The (SPF) for this rash guard worked what it claims! Be sure to apply sun block on areas that this rash guard does not cover. Few things to consider before purchasing it: Get 1 size up since it runs small on the neck, chest, abs and sleeves. If you wear an L then get XL. I wear an XXL. I ordered XXXL. The overall fits feels great at one size up. Or you will not be happy on how tight it feels. It feels like 3mm thick compared to the 3mm shortie wetsuit. It has inner micro-fleece lining that feels soft to touch. Just make sure you hang dry inside out after you take it off allowing the inner fleece to dry and preventing odor to build up. To date, I have not had any issue with odors. I wore this rash guard for snorkeling out in the western Caribbean during the week of July 13th to 26th, 2013. It was comfortable as it kept me warm in the water. The water does not creep into it much. I would not advise you wearing this rash guard under the direct sun for a really long time as it gets really warm. Be sure to go under a shade and/or splash water on your guard to keep cool. It is breathable! I think you will be content wearing this rash guard!

Diving yes, kayaking no

By Roy

I bought this short sleeve shirt to use while using my kayak in cold water. I tried the medium large and large. They both would have been great for diving (that's why the 5 stars) but were too restrictive for kayaking. I even ordered the X Large but it was also too restrictive for paddling even though there were folds in the material as it was too large.

Love this base layer!

By Kevin

I use this as a base layer under a 7mm wetsuit for diving in cold water. Great product! Adds extra warmth without affecting buoyancy as much as conventional neoprene does. I used to layer a 1mm vest and this is a much better option. Plus it dries quickly and is comfortable to wear so I just keep it on during surface intervals. Highly recommend lavacore!

Great for a little heat on a cold dive

By John S.

Purchased the Lavacore short sleeve shirt for diving in Wisconsin all year long. Wanted something for under a 7mm wet suit to keep the heat in by my body. I already have Lavacore socks, which are fantastic. This shirt is great for that purpose. We do ice diving in the winter and this shirt helps a lot. Normal water temperature is 34 - 47 degrees. I ordered an XL and it was true to the fit and tight. I wanted it that way to remove unnecessary water movement. My only issue is when it is wet, removal is difficult unless you have your buddy help start peel it up.

Worked as intended

By steveZ

Seems to fit small. Once wet it does strech some but I stll needed the XXL when I usually order XL in most items.

Great Product, RUNS SMALL!!!

By Danny B.

This product is really great to wear under a wet suit to add another layer of thermal protection. But ... it runs REALLY SMALL, especially under the arms. I usually wear medium size products, and my buddy is usually good with medium/large. For this, I had to go with large, and my buddy with XL.

Allergic to Neoprene

By phillip h.

from Fountain , CO, US

I am allergic to Neoprene and this was a very good option for me. It does not seem as thick as Neoprene in the 3mm range, and it is smaller than advertised, but it does it job and doesn't cause me to itch for 3-5 days after I wear it. It does seem to be solidly constructed.

What is the total weight of this suit? Can just the shirt be bought?
Larry C on Dec 27, 2013
BEST ANSWER: The product you are looking at is the shirt only. It weighs less than a pound dry.

I recently purchased a short sleeve shirt and a couple other Lava Core products. I love their products but they all run small. I'd suggest a size or two larger for the shirt. It works great wet alone or as a base layer in dry suit.

I'm just a consumer but love their products.
How warm, or how much warmer is it in a wet suit with this on in addition?
Steve K on Nov 23, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Wish I could be more helpful. We haven't doubled up with wetsuit over the Lavacore, but a friend @ local dive shop says she uses hers layered with wet suit over it & it makes a big difference--she loves it. I love my Lavacore by itself. Its more comfortable than neoprene, as well as easier to get on & off..
What size chest does the medium fit?

Steve H on Oct 6, 2011
BEST ANSWER: You would buy a Medium, if you had a chest size of 38 to 42 (according to the sizing chart). I have a chest size of 48, which is at the top end of the XL - so I purchased the XXL. It fits well for my intended use. If I was planning on using it as a core warmer, I would have tried the XL.
