Good stuff

By Joe

Very comfortable and well made. Easy to adjust with large heavy-duty buckles. I've only had a max of eight lbs in each weight pocket but they've been stable, no issues to report there. Rear trim weight pockets are a little hard to get at but other than that I'm pleased. I added the Mares air control inflator / octopus and would recommend that combination.

Took a chance... and jackpot!

By etimmy

I use this BC guiding dives in the Red Sea. I love this BC because it doesn't have the average jacket style "squeeze" when you add air. most of the air goes into a semi-wing style bladder. 50+ dives using this and I love it. If you have any big items in your pockets you'll have to remove them before putting in the weight pockets... they both want to occupy the same space. You just then pop the items back in after the pockets are in.

Mares' new jacket style Dragon Bladder design is tightly tailored to reduce drag, placing much of the air cell around the tank. The air cell is contoured to greatly minimize the feeling of the bladder underneath your arms and gives comfortable surface flotation. All that ergonomics and still has a lift of 44 lbs. (20 kg) size large.

Innovative protective buoyancy cover material: Superior combination of 3D Alutex net adds protection, abrasion resistant, with a smooth shield fabric covering. The air cell is made of durable 420 Cordura denier. The Mechanical Release System (MRS Plus), Mares evolution of the first mechanical weight system introduced to the market, incorporating a newly designed buckle system, one pull movement to release your weights. Ergonomically shaped pockets to form to your waist, with large, zippered opening allows for easier insertion of weights. Maximum load of 13 lbs. (6 kg) with most sizes. Inside Velcro to section the pocket in case you don't use the full capacity.

The Dragon has two rear trim weight pockets holding up to10 lbs. (4.5 kg) total. These pockets are positioned in the lower part of the BCD for better upright body efficiency at the surface, and a more streamlined profile. Back Protection System (BPS Plus) patented dual position lumbar capability. Heavily padded in either position, you can double the padding for increased lumbar support or extend the length of the padding depending on body shape for ultimate pre-dive comfort.

Smart D-ring position with large AISI 304 stainless steel rings, 2 bent: 2 upper and 2 lower that are positioned intelligently within your downward vision also functioning as leverage while inserting the weight pockets. Comfort is paramount with the Dragon with its independent harness which allows the air bladder to inflate away from the diver eliminating the crushing effect of BCD's that have fixed harnesses. Elastic cummerbund secures the BCD in place and adjusts for wetsuit compression at depth. QAS-Quick Adjust System change the length of the cummerbund for a better customized fit. A neoprene padded collar and internal plush lining also adds comfort.

BCD comes standard with 3 Pull-Dump/Overpressure Relief Valves, one incorporated into the top of the Ergo Inflator; one located on the right shoulder and a third is located on the rear lower right. Activation of the valves are made easy with both the upper and lower right valves coming with pull cords and the valve incorporated into the Ergo Inflator is activated by an internal cable attached to the inflator mechanism. Inflator includes a 3/8" threaded low pressure quick disconnect hose.

With torso adjustable shoulder straps, adjustable chest and waist straps, all equipped with squeeze-style" side release buckles for easy donning and doffing, two angled zippered pockets, rugged carry handle, dual position hose clip for your gauges, shaped shoulder straps adapt better to alleviate pressure on the shoulders, safety whistle and lots of lift 44 lbs. (20 kg) in the large size makes this one great BCD. Dragon comes in multiple sizes.

The Mares Dragon BCD with MRS Plus Weight Pockets, Black is commonly used for Cold Water, Extreme Depths, Professional, Recreation, Warm Water and more. The Mares Dragon BCD with MRS Plus Weight Pockets, Black is most used by customers who consider themselves to be a Advanced, Advanced Diver, Casual/ Recreational, Recreational Diver among others. Not the quality or durability I expected

I purchased this BC to do my divemaster training. After 60 dives the plastic is peeling off the denier and the decorative plastic is falling off. All my gear is well maintained and this BC was never abused. Bottom line is that this is no a durable, professional-quality product. I am returning it to LeisurePro and will purchase another BCD. Another irritation is that Mares provides no way to contact them directly. Everything goes through a distributor.

Great BC

By SciDiver

This BC is great. I can use it on vacation in the Caribbean, or in the cold waters of Rhode island and Northern California. As a scientific diver as well, I need pockets and rings on my BC to hold things, and this BC has it all. I am able to go down with collecting gear and it keeps everything at reach. It is also just great for going on a dive at any other time. The MRS integrated weight system is also easy to use and a great feature.

By Wally

After one week of diving one of the red handles to the integrated weight system tore from its mount, trying to empty the weight pocket. I had noticed this on a display model in the shop I purchased it from. Stay away from this design on Mares stuff!

Comfortable and great to dive with!

By Retired P.

A well constructed BCD that looks great, fits well, isn't bulky, and works perfectly. The front integrated weight pockets are easy to use. The back weight pockets are difficult to open and get to.

Good BC Second time arounf

By HazmatDiver

Good BC at good price, first one was not sewn correctly and was leaking air right by the name brand tag. Lots of features and very comfortable to wear.

Excellent recreational BC

By jones

Great for everyday diving

Excellent BC

By AUdiver

I used to own the old Scuba Pro Classic which is a great BC, but when I tried the Dragon I was sold. Very comfortable, lightweight, easy adjustable, and dependable. The Integrated weight system is a great feature and one of the easiest to use. The back weight pockets are a little difficult to access, but with the clips provided, you do not have to worry about them falling out. A great buy!

Comfy...doesn't 'flood'

By dixintex

Padded back means you don't feel the backpack or tank against your spine. It's like a large hand cradling me. It doesn't slip up when inflated, it's warm around me in the cold yet cool enough in warmer water. Straps at the waist and at the collar bone PLUS the cumberbun makes it snug and comfy. Lots of D rings for hanging gear and comes with a Octo-holder/hose holder and whistle. The MRS plus weight pockets are great, although I did lose one once due to my own carelessness. BUT they are replaceable and easily found on the internet. Nice not to wear a weight belt! Also has two side pockets to hold vienna sausage cans for the fish! Ahhhh! Life is GREAT!

Great simple b.c.

By Josh

As a rescue diver it is a easy to don and dof also It is a great recreation b.c.

Bad wt pocket release mechanism design

The first wk I owned it, I went to release the wt pockets so I could change the weights(on shore). As I pulled the handle, the interior pin releasing the pocket broke, and since the actual release spring is inside the pocket I could not release the weight. The pocket had to be removed with a hacksaw blade( I sent it in and Mares replaced it under warranty). I decided that I should have a backup pocket should this happen again and for approx. $75(a very expensive part) I got one. I've had 235 dives with the BC and have had to again replace the pocket(twice) because the zipper failed!Mares needs to redesign this system so that a wt pocket can be released if the interior release mechanism failes! Also needs better quality zippers.

Great BCD except for tight MRS pockets

By Orlando C.

Picked up 2 out of 3 at the NYC store; the other 1 was shipped very quickly. No hassle, excellent sales & customer service.

great value

By kapper

good jacket, go a size smaller than you think though as larger make, extremely comfortable

Without a doubt a great BC!

By Will V.

Feels very comfortable and it's really easy to adjust once you have it on. I've read that on sizes extra small and small it is hard to fit weights in the weight pockets; however, I personally use a SMALL and was able to fit 7 lbs in each pocket (14lbs total) without any problems and with room for maybe another 2 lbs per pocket. If you're considering this BC, stop wondering around and get it, as you will not be dissapointed (at least i'm not) Great product at a great price!

Awesome BC

Great BC at a great price. Mares holds up to its reputation with this one. Very durable without sacrificing comfort. If you aren't strapped for money, upgrade to the airtrim

fits like a slipper

By Kuda

Fits nicely, Very confortable. Dual tank straps prevents tank from slipping.

Great bc for the money

By Shark B.

The reason I bought it was the lack of squeeze effect on the rib cage, as you fill it with air the air cell fills towards the back. The adjustable cumberbun was also a good feature along with the open feel around the chest area.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
CRAIG W  I'm an instructor. We use Mares as our rental gear. The durability, ease of use and easy servicing have impressed me.
GERALD O  This is everything you would want in a BCD looks fit comfort.
Felix F  Very durable construction, hybrid bladder so you have small side bladders and the rest is around the tank. Nicely padded harness and back plate, weights are fairly easy to operate, I imagine they will get easier as the BC breaks in more. Certainly strong enough to lift the entire setup with tank by the loop strap.
Art N  What are the differences between the Mares Dragon and the Mares Dragon SLS? And, which is better for traveling?
Mario C  Thank you for your question. The SLS is the new and improved version of the Mares Dragon: Superbly comfortable and stable yet tough and durable Aircell slides on shoulders for increased comfort when inflated Position of the corrugated hose retaining epaulette can be adjusted High lift aircell with “Dragon” winglets Smart trim weight positioning SLS weight system 50mm swivel buckles High capacity cargo pockets with stretch panels Adjustable cummerbund Visual confirmation of proper weight pouch insertion Personalizable label on weight pockets The both have similar weight, so not much difference for travel purposes between both. Hope it helps
Jim M  Does this BC have one cam strap or two? If only one, can an additional cam strap be added? Thanks
DAVID M  It only has one strap. You could add another. This is the best bc I've owned. It's been with me for 4 years with heavy use. Love it
