Minimalist work horse, nothing flashy!!!

By Christian C.

 -  Benton City, WA, US

It just works flawlessly!!! If you are one of those people that uses full cave dive equipment to see pretty fish in the Caribbean, so people can see how cool you are, this is not for you. This would be the equivalent of a Glock for pistols, it just works no matter the environment. Not pretty, not flashy, just fail proof

Best over all regulator on the market

By SEAN H.

 -  Anchorage, AK, US

I've used a few regulators and those one has been the best. Easy to tune, never freezes up and we do a ton of cold water diving! Breathes so good!

Introducing the Abyss 22 Navy II, Mares' answer to your diving needs in any condition, even under ice. Careful analysis and design ensure top performance and reliability in the toughest environments.

The first stage of this all-chrome-plated marine brass regulator features a balanced diaphragm design that's environmentally sealed. This design prevents contaminants like salt, sand, and chlorine from entering the internal mechanism, ensuring lasting performance without corrosion or mineral deposits.

The Navy 22 Abyss II goes a step further with the CWD kit, keeping cold water from the spring cavity and ensuring consistent air flow. Its Tri-Material Valve Technology optimizes performance, safety, and reliability. A hard Polyurethane (PU) covers the valve, while a soft PU layer ensures a perfect seal for unmatched durability.

The first stage also includes Dynamic Flow Control (DFC), minimizing intermediate pressure drops for a simpler, more reliable second stage without manual adjustments. This guarantees stable air flow in extreme conditions.

The all-metal second stage, made of marine-grade brass with a fluoropolymer resin finish, outperforms plastic alternatives in cold water due to high thermal conductivity that limits freezing. Additionally, it offers improved durability, longer working life, and reduced dry mouth.

The patented mesh design of the second stage cover minimizes free-flow and negates the need for de-tuning. Mares' patented Vortex Assisted Design (VAD) system ensures sensitive and easy breathing at all depths.

The Abyss 22 Navy II passed the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) tests and is now authorized for military use. Weighing 47.2 oz (1337g), it comes with a 29.5" (75cm) low-pressure hose and features multiple ports for optimal performance. The regulator is Nitrox-ready up to 40% oxygen, straight out of the box.

This product can only be shipped to U.S. addresses.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Rich H  does this not come with an environmental cap?
Christopher D  It comes with the Mares Cold Water Diving Kit, which is an environmental seal
박종인 박  how many number LP port?
GLENN A  The regulator has 4 low pressure ports and 2 high pressure ports
SEAN H  Pretty standard first stage. 4 LP ports and 2 HP ports. I do a ton of dry suit diving so I have my suit, my red and back up reg all hooked up as well as my bcd. All low pressure. Then monolog gauges as well as computer consider so. I have all 6 PORTS used.
DOUGLAS F  1 LP 1/2” UNF port, 3 LP 3/8” UNF ports
Shopper  I just purchased the Mares Abyss 22 Navy II. The picture on the site shows it with the Name NAVY printed on it. Mine came with the letters AMU printed on it. What does AMU stand for???
WILL D  "Authorized for Military Use," meaning it's been tested & approved by the US Navy.
SEAN H  He "AMU" stands for "Authorized For Military Use" It went through rigorous military testing to receive this stamp. I think they may have gone to AMU per ALL military rather than miss leading every one thinking it was "Navy" only.
DOUGLAS F  "AMU" means that it is on the US Navy's "Approved for Military Use" list. In this particular case it means that it has been tested and approved for "Cold Water Use" by the US Navy.
GLENN A  Look in the smaller manual "erogatore abyss 22 navy ii" AMU: Authorized for Military Use.
JAN K  AMU. Authorized Military Use
LANDY M  It's the test performed on the regulator "extreme cold" ice diving condition
RUPERT M  AMU stands for approved for military use. I like really like this system for cold water use but it feeds me too much air. This takes a lot of time to get use to and you must push back on the air supply to stop the excess air.
DANIEL S  I believe the stands for, "Authorized for Military Use".
RONALD S  Authorized for Military Use
Shopper  Which would you recommend when it comes to performance and durability in the most demanding & extreme of conditions? If your life were to depend on it,hands down. A. Mares Abyss II Navy B. Scubapro MK25 EVO/A700
GLENN A  I have no experience with Scubapro. I bought the Mares because it was recommended by a diving buddy. My preference was Dacor which are no longer serviced.
BRIAN K  Have dived with scubapro and mares regulators and found the mares regs are easier breathing and more comfortable second stages so for best overall recreational diving would go with a mares.
KEN D  Both are good regulators. I have had years of experience with the Mares Abyss and they are almost bullet proof. Hundreds of dives well over 100' in depth in the Pacific Northwest waters as well as Hawaii. I have had the Abyss to 200' depth and it performed extremely well. I have used and repaired these regulators for years and will continue to do so. we used them commercially for years and they gave us a long life. I don't think you can wrong with either regulator. Scuba pro makes an outstanding regulator and I think it comes down to price and personal preference. Good luck and safe diving. Ken
KEN D  I have used and worked on these regulators for years and made hundreds of deep dives, well over 100’ depth range including 200’ dive on regular air and has never failed me.
SHAWN J  Hi I'm a underwater archaeologist and I use the mares abyss navy. I have dove over 100 scientific dives through the mud, sand, silt. I've had the second stage completely packed with river sediment and I have never had a problem with it. I have never used scuba pro so really can't speak for it. Hope this helps. Shawn
SEAN H  The Abyss II. It meets my needs for deep and cold water dives in Alaska and the breathing performance on all my other dives is outstanding.
Shopper  What is the rubberized component, that Michael S. noted?
YAN G  I believe he was referring to the cold water kit. It is a rubber diaphragm that is on the top of the first stage. There is no cover for it. That is the cold water kit.
