a wetsuit for those who hate wetsuits

By dp

I hate wetsuits. And I hate being cold. Quite the connundrum. I hate putting then on, I hate pulling them off, I hate that feeling when you get a gush of cold water in your suit, I hate the smell of neoprene, I hate the velcro catching my hair, I hate back zips... My least favorite part about suiting up for a dive -- the wetsuit. The lavacore takes away ALL of these unpleasantries. You feel like you are putting on your favorite fleece. It's light weight and easy to put on (no matter the con...

Wife loves it!

By SFC_Swede

I had purchased a Henderson thermoprene shorty for my wife for our first Caribbean dive vacation. Because of her claustrophobia, the neck seal for her wasnt a real smart choice. The Dive Operation we were using allowed her to use the Oceanic Lavacore, and she was immediately in love with it. Her diving improved, the second she used the Lavacore, as she was no longer focused on the constricting nature of the neck seal of the Henderson. She also raved about its comfort, and ease of wear. Lavacore is a technically advanced fabric, constructed and engineered exclusively for water sports requiring the ultimate in thermal control and superior comfort. Thermal and neutral buoyancy properties create the ideal garment - under a neoprene wetsuit for added insulation and warmth or as a stand-alone exposure protection garment. The unique design of Lavacore materials eliminates constriction and allows for extreme movement and flexibility while regulating your core warmth.

Lavacore suits are made with an exclusive Polytherm Tri-Laminate. Ideal for use as a primary exposure suit in warmer waters or as a supplemental undergarment in colder waters. Windproof and breathable providing anti-wind chill properties while also drawing moisture away from the body on the surface, ensuring warmth in cold conditions. For the ultimate in warmth Lavacore's Merino Laminate lined garments are super soft yet durable. Moisture wicking and anti-bacterial, the Merino fleece inner minimizes odor and keeps you warm above and below the surface.

Suit is DWR: Durable Water Repellant has flat seam construction throughout for stretch and comfort, comfortable contoured collar with hook and loop adjustment, kneepads provide total flexibility, durability and comfort, a heavy-duty dual slider front zipper for easy self-donning-and-doffing, removable stirrups for use in active water sports and provides UPF 50+ protection. Suit comes with thumb loops and stirrups to prevent suit ride-up when worn under and exposure suit for layering. Suit is available in multiple sizes and is black in color.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

ILTERIS S  My height : 180cm, chest: 109cm  waist: 98cm, hips: 102cm, inseam: 80cm, what should be the size to order?
Mario C  ML is looking like your size.
JAMES E  Does this have the double front zipper?
PAUL R  Yes. I remember being able to zip it...whip it...and pee underwater in the ocean on a guided dive...more than once, and not have it be a big ordeal. So it has the bottom up, and top down zipper.
KEVIN F  There is a Lavacore suit available that has a front zipper but this suit has a back zipper
JOHN M  Yes it does.
Shopper  Will I fit into an S if I am 5'10"? Both ML and M are way too wide because I am tall and very thin.
KENT B  I am 5'9", 167lbs and have a Lavacor MD that fits very well. .
JOE S  The best thing to do is check the size chart since there is no way to know your measurements without listing them out. The sizing has run small in the past, but should be true to size now.
KEITH J  The legs may be too short. You can always return it.
JOHN B  Sorry, I don't think I can help. I believe I bought the 4XL, so no experience near that size range.
WAYNE K  I would suggest you find a local dive shop that has the Lavacore and try different sizes to find one on to see what best fits you. I have found mine to be a little tight crotch to neck - don't get me wrong it works but need help getting it off my shoulders (I am 6'). Front zipper actually takes getting use to - again its the getting it off due to the front zipper. I think you can get a rear zipper now - that is what I would buy. LP is pretty easy to work with when things don't fit and have to be returned - it's just the time hassle. These suits are different than your normal exposure suit - I use mine for night diving only as they really do work in keeping one warm while wet and in the wind after the dive.
Shopper  What equivalent mil thickness is this suit, 3, 5, 7 ??
RENEE C  Just returned from Cozumel. Wore a 3 ml first day and lavacore the next. Felt equally warm both days.
IREM M  it is about 3...
PETRUS L  I would say it comes close to a 3MM. I've only worn it in the Caribbean and it was very comfortable, easy to don & doff and quick drying. It could probably be worn under another wetsuit in colder water.
JORDAN T  Oceanic claim it is equal to a 3 mm suit. I have used it with a 3 mm suit in colder temps, and I found it to be a comfortable dive. I am yet to actually test it to it's full potential. But for the time I have used it I would recommend it.
KEITH J  I found that it absorbed so much water that it was less insulating than a 3 mil.
JOE S  It is probably similar to my Henderson polyolefin dive skin - I'd quess it is equiv. to a 2 mm suit. Like the polyolefin - it has no buoyancy to weight against. I love these Lavacore products. They are soft on the inside and rugged on the outside, have a lot of stretch and are not restricting like rubber suits. It has a couple of minor downsides: 1. when it is wet it is hard to peel off the body and other fabrics [ I use a lycra diveskin under it for ease of removal.] 2. it takes a long time to dry [twice as long as neoprene.] I highly recommend Lavacore products - the vest is great and so are the hood and booties- very comfortable, soft and warm.
TIM B  Maybe a 5
HEATHER H  I would estimate it to be about equivalent to a 2 mil. as far as warmth.
Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
RIC R  I’ve been diving with Lavacore suits for 2 decades! Perfect for warm water dives!
FREDERICK C  First one lasted 10 years
CURTIS J  I do not handle cold water well. Need a liner in my wetsuit to keep warm.
KENNETH M  RECOMMENDED BY FRIEND
JOHN L  Ordered these to wear under our 3mm wetsuits.
KELI N  replacement for one that I had that I left by accident in Aruba.
PATRICIA B  Warm and soft. So much easier to get off and I love the front zipper. Very well made.
JORGE S  reviews said it was best for my body type
ANITA C  My husband is a big guy, hopefully this suit will be a good fit. Front zipper is a must! back zippers suck! :-) plus it appears to be lightweight, which is what he wants. will review further when I receive the product.
SCOTT K  I already own a Lavacore back zip and love it! Trying the front zip now.
ROGER K  needed new size
MICKEY G  I have an old areostar front zip dive suit. Really love it, but after 1300 dives it is a bit work. Lavacore is a similar , but better, suit. Really love a light(but 3mm), front zip suit.
