Great after replacing the bungees

By strmko

Since my girlfriend dived the new Katana 2, I took the older model for a spin in Yucatan. I found the bungees too stif to my taste, hence I replaced the whole loop. It also needed some D-rings adjustment, but once it sit on their place, it is nice kit to dive with. My girlfriend was happy with her K2, so I will keep this one for myself.

Hollis continues to lead the side mount revolution - the new Side Mount System (SMS) Katana is the latest innovation in the line of side mount systems developed by Hollis - engineered to perform in the most extreme environments. The Katana was designed with warm water Cenotes and Caves of Mexico in mind. Nick Hollis has worked with several respected Mexican cave instructors and North Florida cave instructors to sharpen the Katana into a fine tuned diving weapon. Curved and slender like the finest traditional Japanese sword - the Katana builds on the proven SMS100 and SMS75 incorporating a compact and streamlined design.

The 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) lift wing is designed to reduce size and weight for travel. Two 5 lbs. (2.26 kg) weight pockets with an optional 5 lbs. (2.26 kg) trim pouches available. System has an H" harness design for adjustability and reversible Inflator & Dump assembly. Primary bungees integrated into to wing to pull tanks upward away from diver's torso and integrated retainers located to avoid overhead interference. Harness comes with multiple shoulder, waist and crotch strap stainless steel D-rings for rigging and accessory attachment. The harness is made from durable webbing and has a stainless steel latch-style: waist strap buckle. Hollis Gear Power Inflator Mechanism is made from durable impact resistant plastic with internal components and inlet quick-disconnect nipple made from chrome plated brass. The inflator comes with a 3/8" threaded quick-disconnect inflator hose for attachment to first stage regulator. Air cell is made from radio frequency (RF) welded seam nylon with urethane interior laminate. The SMS Katana comes with an owner's manual.

Hollis Katana SM BCD

By BRUCE H.

from Phoenix, AZ, US

I finally had a chance to try out my new katana at the lake. As usual I love the quality and finish off this and other Hollis rigs. Fit was great after adjusting for a while at home the week before. Only problem I had was at the end of my second dive with low air in my lp 72 steels I went light in the feet and did my safety stop get up. I probably just need to adjust how my tanks are hanging. First dive was fine. The spine weight pockets are convenient and comfortable, but I may need to put some weight on a belt to get my trim better.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
Carl K  Checked out a friends and compared with other systems .... preferred the layout better than other systems ...
Marcus B  Do the drop down d rings keep aluminum tanks in trim regardless of how light aluminum tanks become or do you need to switch to the waist drings once the tanks become light?
Eric E  I don't use the drop d rings for main cylinders. I added 2 low profile d rings on each side and switch positions after about 500 psi. The drop d rings are great for reels and stages.
BRUCE H  I did not get the butt plate so I am only working from the waist band. I am using sling d-rings so I am just sliding up and down as tanks get light but mostly use negatively buoyant steel tanks. I do be believe you would need to go from bar on butt plate to a lower ring on waist to keep your tanks in trim.
Marcus B  Thanks for the response. I thought the drop down d rings were on the belt?
M H  What do I need to connect the al80 tanks to the Katana?
