The Red Sea is known to have over 2,000 identified species of fish. A small percentage of these fish are endemic to the Red Sea, meaning they can only be found in its waters. The lengthy coral reef and the Red Sea’s fairly small presence in the commercial fishing industry are credited for the diverse populations of marine species found here. Many of these fish are known for unique physical characteristics like colors and patterns, and these five are some of the most beautifully patterned fish of the Red Sea.

Butterflyfish

The butterflyfish is a fine example of a patterned fish, replete with bright colors. Their bodies can sport a variety of color patterns containing black, yellow, white, red, orange, and blue. Many of these fish have eyespots adorning their flanks, and a light-to-dark band that spans across the eyes.

Clownfish

Another beautifully patterned fish of the Red Sea is the clownfish. This fish, popularized by Disney’s Finding Nemo, is known for its pattern of three white bands on the body, with or without black outlines, while the main color on a clownfish can be orange, yellow, black, or red.

Emperor Angelfish

The emperor angelfish is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful fish in the Red Sea. This species is known to change color as it matures into adulthood. The young angelfish begins life blue in color with white and bright blue rings, while the maturing angelfish will turn yellow with blue stripes. It takes about 2 years for a young fish to fully bloom into its adult colors.

Parrotfish

The parrotfish is another delightfully patterned fish found in the Red Sea. Known for their bright jewel-like colors, these incredible fish have the ability to constantly change their hues, which can range from splashes of red, blue, green, orange, and yellow. But don’t be surprised if you see one exhibiting shades of black and brown as well.

Spangled Emperor

The spangled emperor’s pattern is rather dull compared to the other fish on this list, but that doesn’t mean it lacks aesthetic value. This lovely species  is adorned in yellowish brown hues, featuring splotches of blue on the head and the body.
