About Underwater Kinetics Sunlight SL4 eLED Dive Light

The high intensity SL4 eLED dive light is ideal for minimizing weight for travel due to its high brightness, small size and long burn time. Underwater, you can stow it out of the way in your BC pocket for when you go over the wall or peer deep under a ledge. As a back-up, the SL4 provides plenty of illumination to finish your dive. The eLED circuitry provides relatively constant brightness throughout most of the life of the batteries. As the batteries are nearly depleted the brightness of the LED falls sharply, but does not go out as happens with classical filament lamps. This brightness will persist for several days, making this light valuable for emergency situations. The SL4 eLED is also great as a photo spotting light or to illuminate gauges and dive tables.

The SL4 LED operates more efficiently and produces more light when it is cool. Underwater, the SL4 eLED burns brighter for almost half of the battery life, due to the unique way that heat is conducted away from the LED. The higher brightness consumes a little more power and slightly reduces the battery life. The SL4's eLED lamp produces 400 lumens of brightness and provides a 622' (189.6 meter) beam distance on land. To reduce glare and protect the light, the SL4 comes with a molded rubber bezel cover. The rotary switch is easily activated with the thumb and index finger for single hand operation. The Light is powered by 4 x C"-cell alkaline batteries (included) with a burn time of 10 hours. The light measures 6.18" x 2.48" x 1.69" (15.7 x6.3 x 4.3 cm), weighs 15.02 oz (425.81 g) with batteries and is depth rated to 500' (152.4 meters). The SL4 is made from durable ABS and polycarbonate plastic, available in multiple colors, includes a wrist lanyard, an owner's manual, is proudly made in the USA and is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

The Underwater Kinetics Sunlight SL4 eLED Dive Light is commonly used for Close-Up Viewing, Extreme Depths, Night Diving, Professional, Recreational, Safety Backup and more. As a dive professional who makes 4-6 dives a day -- everyday and, an avid night diver I use this Dive light religiously! It fit's in the pocket of my BCD and dangles nicely from the lanyard with a stainless D-clip(not included.)I dive shipwrecks every morning and leave it "on" for 60 - 100 minutes a day. The beam is intense and focused. I've used it as a Primary light as well as having one as my secondary on night dives. It's great for it's size. The housing and lens/recepticle can take a beating. If there is one thing I could ask U.K. to improve it would be the switch mechanism. I found that this is the first thing to fail in over 5 years of diving with this light. Underwater Kinetics is also great at servicing and or replacing parts. I highly recommend this product. What do I know... I only have over 12,000 dives!

The light has a very strong, white light. It's small enough to shine into small cubbyholes or under ledges. It's also bright enough to light up distant parts in a room on a wreck dive.
Unfortunately, the housing with the C-cells is so tight it is VERY difficult to change the batteries. I took the batteries out before putting into a bag checked for a flight and it took me over an hour to pry the batteries back into it. I was able to get them in with a long screwdriver but marred the inside of the housing in doing so.

Comments about Underwater Kinetics Sunlight SL4 eLED Dive Light:

I have used this light in SoCal for daytime lobster (under rocks) and as a primary while night diving (for lobster). It has worked great, bright beam, lightweight, and reliable. However, I noticed on my night dives that the light will burn brightly for about 1 1/2 hour, then dim to about 2/3 brightness. Even then, it was still bright enough to help me snag a couple of bugs, but still dimmer than I expect. Overall, A great daytime or backup light, but I think I will be picking up an Aquasun or Light Cannon for my primary. Did I mention I like lobsters?

Comments about Underwater Kinetics Sunlight SL4 eLED Dive Light:

I gave my UK SL4 eLED 400 lumens light to my dive master in Jamaica in lieu of tips. He claimed shipping was exorbitantly expensive to his village, and he could use the light to supplement his income by (legally) hunting lobsters, so.... Instead of getting another UK light, I bought the Princeton Tec because it uses AA rechargeable batteries, and I already had a supply of those and a charger. I thought it made sense instead of lugging C cells and another charger just for the UK light. Problem is, at only 126 lumens, the Princeton Tec literally pales in comparison with the UK SL4. To make matters worse, the Princeton Tec's switch lock always slides down, meaning I have made many a dive with a hot, bright BC pocket! As long as I remember to check it periodically during the dive, the Princeton Tec makes a decent low-power dive light. I don't do much night diving or cave diving, so this light gets used mainly to brighten up the occasional swim-thru, help my camera focus in low light, or get the attention of other divers. If I can find a more powerful, compact light that uses AA batteries, I'll consign this one to backup status.

Comments about Underwater Kinetics Sunlight SL4 eLED Dive Light:

I bought two of these lights for my daughter and I to use on our AOW dives. 4 of 5 dives were wreck sites, extra light would have been great to help see and take photos.
I took the first one down on the first dive. All was fine until I turned the switch to power it on. Light immediately flooded and went out. This was at 60'. The water in the casing started out clear then turned black from mixing with the battery acid. I ended up with an unusable light (extra weight) and missing many great photo ops.
Get back to the surface and empty out the casing, hoping another set of fresh batteries would grant me a second chance. No such luck. Had to throw it away.
Next day I tried the secong light I had purchased. This time tried it out while I was still floating on the surface waiting for the other divers to submerge. Less than 2' of water and same results. Light flooded instantly at the turn of the switch.
I know what you are thinking. I must not have gotten the seals right after putting the batteries in. I'm pretty sure I did. The lights were watertight even at depth until I turned the switch. Instant flood and worthless weight.
      DO NOT BUY THESE LIGHTS!

0 for 3 with these lights so far

Comments about Underwater Kinetics Sunlight SL4 eLED Dive Light:

I bought two of these lights - one died before we hit depth, the second died after we surfaced. No sign of flooding or damage in either. I returned both to UK for replacement. First replacement died after first dive - same thing - no sign of failure, just no light. Second replacement hasn't been wet yet.

Changing the batteries is a pain in the buttocks. 'How hard could it be?'you ask - well, I'll tell you - it's hard! You have to drop one in the lower slot, then angle and push the second one into place (not so hard) BUT if you don't keep them both pushed down while inserting the upper row, they pop up and jam in place. Whoever designed this system should be forced to personally visit every user and change their batteries for them.

I used this on a work project that required us to leave it, in the water, on for a month. To our surprise when we came to retrieve it, it was still on and giving off light. Not as bright as when we first turned it on, but bright enough that if you shined it on a wall you could see the beam. After being left on for a month! Extremely bright and reliable. This exceeded my all ready high expectations of Underwater Kinetics.

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
sarah d  Good price for this item. My son picked this out for himself.
              Shopper  battery instalation?
ALEJANDRO P  Hi, to install batteries you have to remove bulb cap and insert first the two bateries that goes in the lower position and then the other two bateries in the upper line. It is very easy.
Shopper  what is the difference between this model and the SL4 L1?
TOM B  SL-4 eLED is a great dive light....I use one for my primary light all the time in limited visibility water and night dives. Batteries seem to last a lot longer with the eLED's. Do not get it in a dark color, you can loose them to easy....stick with yellow or lime green.
