The Legend GLACIA first stage is an over-balanced diaphragm design. As you descends the intermediate pressure coming out of the first stage increases at a rate faster than ambient pressure. The over-balancing compensates for the increased density of the breathing gas at depth. The balanced diaphragm, chrome plated marine brass first stage regulator is inherently environmentally sealed. The benefit of this type of first stage design is that none of the delicate internal parts are exposed to contaminants such as salt, sand, chlorine or pool acids. These environmental contaminants can cause corrosion and mineral deposits to form on the internal mechanism deteriorating regulator performance. A diaphragm first stage regulator requires less maintenance then regulators that allow contaminates to enter the internal mechanism. The diaphragm of the first stage regulator forms a membrane barrier between the environment and the internal components. The diaphragm membrane transmits pressure changes to the mechanism keeping the internal parts cleaner and contaminant free.
The Legend GLACIA is also designed as a cold water regulator. The GLACIA Version of the Legend is resistant to freezing when diving in waters colder than 50°F/10°C. It does this with the addition of three heat exchangers one on the first stage, one on the low pressure hose and another on the second stage inlet. It also seals off the spring chamber keeping the first stage completely sealed off from the environment, adding a second layer of corrosion resistance and prevention of freezing in cold water use. The first stage heat exchanger is a series of ribs in the end cap of the main spring chamber. These ribs act like a radiator worming the spring chamber to the ambient water temperature further reducing the potential of first stage freezing.
The Legend GLACIA also protects the function of the first stage with the auto closure devise (ACD). The ACD keeps corrosive water out of the first stage thereby ensuring top performance. The ACD seals the regulator's inlet fitting, as soon as the regulator is removed from the cylinder valve. This will keep water and contaminants out of the regulator's first stage during rinsing and storage. It allows the first stage to maintain peak performance over time, will retain its internal lubrication longer and makes the first stage safer for NITROX use.
When the regulator is clamped onto the scuba cylinder, the inlet crown retracts thereby exposing the gas inlet in the center valve post. This provides a steady flow of breathing gas through the first stage without any restrictions. The Legend's unique forged body is T-shaped for better hose routing. The T-shape uses less-brass making it more compact. The first stage regulator has 4 low pressure Ports 3/8" UNF thread and 2 high pressure ports 7/16 UNF thread. The ports are angled for optimum hose configuration. The Legend regulator is compatible with NITROX mixtures up to 40% O2 out-of-the-box.
The Legend GLACIA second stage regulator is a pneumatically balanced design. A pneumatically balanced design delivers gas at a constant pressure so work-of-breathing remains effortless independent of depth or tank pressure. In short a pneumatically-balanced second stage results in superior ease-of-breathing. The second stage is equipped with an easy-to-grip VENTURI lever that stops unwanted free-flow when the regulator is out-of-your-mouth. The second stage also has an adjustment knob that allows the diver to optimize-the-opening effort. In the Mini" position, the opening-effort is increased, this is ideal for avoiding free flows at the surface, in the Maxi" position; the inhalation effort is reduced, reducing the work of breathing. The Legend GLACIA second stage comes with Aqua Lung's COMFO-Bite mouthpiece which reduces jaw fatigue. The Legend GLACIA also has a lip-shield on the second stage mouthpiece outlet to keep the divers lips warm in cold water diving.
To further prevent freeze-ups in cold water the Legend GLACIA second stage is equipped with a heat-exchange inlet fitting. The ribbed heat exchange inlet helps warm the air flowing to the second stage reducing the possibility of second stage freezing. The regulator housing is manufactured from a durable techno-polymer with an aluminum front cover. The mouthpiece, exhaust valve and diaphragm are silicone. The Legend GLACIA regulator is equipped with a 3/8" threaded 29" (73.7 cm) low pressure hose which has an additional heat exchanger fitted to help reduce cold water freezing. The Legend GLACIA regulator weighs 42.9 oz (1,216 g), comes with an owner's manual and is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
