About Spare-Air 3000 3.0 Kit, Yellow

Having a safety back-up air supply has many advantages over a standard alternate air source. The most obvious is that it is a separate air supply and allows self rescue in an emergency out of air situation. We are taught to stay with our buddy so that in case of an emergency they are right there ready to help us. Next time you make a dive count the times your buddy is further then arms length from you. You will be surprised that they are much further away more often then you may think. Spare-Air gives you a major advantage over an alternate air source when an emergency arises. Having something to breathe from while you are swimming to your buddy, and then, getting their attention while they have their head in a hole watching a lobster can take several breaths or more of air. Tested and approved, Spare Air is a totally self-contained 3000 psi (200 bars) 3.0 cu. ft. (85 liter), refillable backup air system that's small and easy to use. It was designed to get you to the surface in the event of an emergency; yet, it is small enough to not even know you are wearing it! Spare Air is easy to use and maintain, just put it in your mouth and breathe. Kit includes easy refill adapter so you can fill directly off your own Scuba cylinder. So give yourself that extra edge of safety with Spare Air. The cylinder measures (L x Dia.) 13.4" x 2.25" (34cm x 5.71cm) and weighs 2.17 lbs (985g) Note: All Spare Air cylinders meet certificated specifications of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) with DOT-3AA specification and Transport Canada Safety and Security (TC) with TC-3AAM specifications. Spare Air comes with an owner's manual, holster, safety leash and is covered by a 12 month limited warranty.

I decided it would be crazy of me to get back into the water w/o such a device....how stupid would I feel IF I ran into a situation where spare air was needed and I'd opted to save a few bucks. Just couldn't get those thoughts out of my head, so pulled the trigger. Why take the risk. How often is your dive buddy within reach...I mean close enough you could reach his octopus w/o having to take at least a few good kicks? Could you get there if you went to inhale and couldn't get that breath you needed RIGHT NOW...still got enough air to close up on your buddy and get to his octopus?
Spare-Air eliminates that concern.
It attaches easily to you BC...just remember to put it where you can REACH it easily. I found attaching it (open end down) near the lower end of my tank made opening the Velcro cover on the carry bag awkward...was out of the way yet retrievable, but took a few seconds to get to. Found this out while testing accessibility and function of it on one of my last dives of the 20 I did with Spare-Air at Cocos Island...no emergency, I had air and time to play with it.
The only downside I can see to Spare-Air is that you have to work a bit harder to draw each breath. Not a big price to pay to stay alive in a serious air emergency, however.

LIMITED, Not good for deeper diving..

ONLY 3 Cu Ft. Very limited to shollower depths. Not enough supply to get you up from under 90'. Be Careful....

Comments about Spare Air Spare-Air 3000 3.0 Kit, Yellow:

My wife & I have used this product on every dive for 10 years (1800 dives). I've tested it from 40, 60 & 90 feet coming up to 15 feet. From 40 & 60 you could do a 1 minute safety stop. From 90 you don't do any stops but do try to stay within the recommended ascent rate. That will keep you out of the decompression chamber.

I believe this is a must item for any serious diver, however, after a couple of uses, I haven't found a satisfactory way to secure it to my BCD or me in general. It is continually moving around. In time, I'll figure it out!

Spare air is a great compact device that can save you in a bind. It holds just enough air to get you back. If you are in deco or want to make a safety stop this will not be the best choice. Gives about 10min of air on the surface.

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
WILLIS R C  I bought this as an "insurance policy." It is nice to have. I use it frequently in the pool at the YMCA after our dive club meeting. I would check with the country you are going to. I have gone to the Dominican Republic with it for diving. For our trip to Israel, the Tel Aviv dive operation told me to leave it at home when I asked if security would have a problem at Ben Gurion. I have been able to get on US carriers with no problem.
