Finally bought my first new regulator after 25 years, and so I bought the same as the old one. Sherwood Bruts are as tough as the name - my old Sherwood Brut is still functional after 25 years (including 6 years in storage whilst I worked abroad), so I was only ever going to replace it with the same thing. They have (not surprisingly) made a few improvements over the past 25 years, but I still rate the breathing quality higher than more expensive models.

I initially bought the Sherwood Brut for both my wife and myself because of the price but like all new endeavors; the more you do something the more you need and expect out of your equipment. The Brut will perform but you get what you pay for. At depths greater than 70 feet and especially past 100 feet, breathing seemed labored. I found that this does not do well in the upside down position either. The one feature I actually liked was the mouth piece, it’s just as plain as the regulator but it seemed to be the right size for both my wife (who has braces) and myself. I currently use another regulator with a Comfo-Bite mouthpiece that hurts the roof of my mouth. The one thing I really disliked about the Brut is that you can’t control the flow rate, the day I decided to change Regs was the day my wife was startled underwater and had a hard time catching her breath. That incident convinced both her and I that it was time to move on. The Brut is a good basic regulator but don’t expect too much. Also… Both Regulators had the “O” rings fail where the second stage meets the hose. It was an easy fix but aggravating. We dive at least three times a week every week but if you only dive once or twice a year then this may be a better option.

      Comments about Sherwood Brut Regulator:

We received 10 of these regs to go into our rental stock about 3 months ago and now all of the regs are broken. The problem with them is this; the purge button or face plate detaches and jams into the diaphragm causing the regs to free flow. It's a good thing the face plate has 4 openings on it, that way you can pry the face plate off the diaphragm with your fingers to stop the free flow(until you purge the reg again)
When we first got them they worked great. I really hope they change the design because the old bruts were work horses. We now have 10 regs that are practically out of our rental pool.

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
DANA M  This is my first Stage 1 Regulator. The reviews sounded well rounded for recreational use and it seems very durable.
george p  What's the difference between this and the SRB9110 Brut Regulator??
Monica s  SRB9110 is a balanced 1st stage, The older Brut is not balanced.
quentin e  can this reg be used for a drysuit and witch port does the hose go ?
MICHAEL B  I believe that you mean for dry suit inflation. The answer is yes, I use this reg for dry suit inflation now. You connect to a low pressure port just like the BC does. I would recommend a 1" pressure gauge to monitor the sate of the fill and a OPV is mandatory.
quentin e  thanks for the info I have used brut for years and am so happy don't realy whant to try anouther brand.
