About Sea-Doo RS2 Sea Scooter

Scuba divers pursue their sport to experience the fun and excitement of the underwater world. A DPV (Dive Propulsion Vehicle) can enhance this experience by providing a greater mobility and extended time while using less effort. Designed to provide divers with greater mobility and less air consumption giving them more bottom time (within table limits) and far greater range.

There is nothing ordinary about the way it looks or the way it glides for that matter. You submerge and it reacts and adapts, you toggle into gear it comes alive! See-Doo's RS Series Sea Scooter RS2 with its environmentally friendly Lithium-Ion power source and unique instant neutral buoyancy system, offers a bold new way to experience the big blue.

Visionary design for an underwater adventure guaranteeing the most thrilling and energy efficient underwater ride ever. At the heart of the RS Series Sea Scooters is the Lithium-Ion (LI-ION) battery. LI-ION batteries are the most energetic rechargeable batteries available for electronic consumer product today. The technology is being scaled for the automotive industry but already featured in See-Doo's RS Series Sea Scooters supplying great efficiency, acceleration and range. LI-ION batteries have a high energy to weight ratio meaning that a given weight battery stores more power than an equal weight Lead-Acid or NiMH battery. This makes them much lighter and more powerful than other types of rechargeable batteries of the same size. LI-ION batteries have no issues with respects to air travel! Another great advantage to LI-ION batteries is that they have no memory effect; you don't have to completely discharge them before recharging, they retain most of their charge even in months of storage, and can easily take hundreds of charge/discharge cycles. Because of their long life LI-ION batteries are environmentally considerate and cost effective energy source for the future.

The Automatic Buoyancy Control feature of the RS Series Sea Scooters is a self-filling ballast hull that achieves neutral buoyancy almost instantly. Strategically placed drain holes allow water to freely enter and exit the ballast space making the Sea Scooter automatically assume neutral buoyancy when submerged, and expel water as soon as it hits the surface. Fine tune your buoyancy by using the four ballast weights in any of four insertion slots.

The Handlebar of the Scooter is the user's main navigation tool and is made of the best impact resistant material. It features smart ergonomically positioned triggers for a natural thumb position during trigger operation. Accessory D-ring attachment points and a dashboard-style LED battery status indicator for an accurate voltage display during use. The RS2 measures 12.6" x 11.8" x 24" (319 x 300 x 610 mm) and weighs 19 lbs (8.6 kg) on land and is depth rated to 130' (40 meters). The DPV is powered by a 22.2 Volt 8AH LI-ION rechargeable battery and uses 350 Watts of power. The DPV's run time on a full charge is 75 minutes and can obtain a speed of 3.70 mph (6 km/h). Recharge time is 4 hours and the unit has 3 gears. The RS2 comes equipped with the battery, 4 ballast weights, 2 glide fins and a carry strap.

Comments about Sea-Doo RS2 Sea Scooter:

I was cautious about purchasing a Sea-Doo sea scooter since there have been issues with the earlier product lines (such as seal leaks for one). Then began to hear about the new RS line and read reviews and it looks like Sea-Doo made a concerted effort to come out with a better product. It is well made, uses a Li-Ion battery (besides better run time- about 80 minutes- can be shipped on an airline), added user friendly features (3 speeds, dual push button controls where either can be used thus minimizing thumb fatigue, and an LED read out for battery status). Also, to charge the battery simply unscrew a water proof port and insert charging probe thus no need to crack open housing etc.

On paper it looked good so lets put it to the test. I flew down to Cayman Islands and put it in as check on luggage (kept in OEM box which meets the 62" L+W+H requirement ) and due to Li-Ion battery and weight (boxed: 24 lbs) was no problem. My son and I took it out and ran it hard (keeping it in 2nd and 3rd speeds most of the time) and performed very well and came to surface with 2 of the 3 LEDs still on...only after we were back on the boat did the LEDs finally read with only one still plenty of juice. Very manueverable and reasonably quiet (we also were testing out a BladeFish 5000 which was extremely noisy as compared to the RS2). Dove with it several more times and same results with battery life (takes about 4 hours to recharge from 1 LED light on). I have now mounted a GoPro mount on the nose and that will be for my next dive trip. The only down side I see is when the Li-Ion battery needs replacing (manufacturer does not indicate life of battery e.g. life cycle duration) the battery is expensive.
