About Scubapro Air 2, Combination Octopus/Inflator Regulator, Black/Gray

When you took dive lessons you learned to perform specific skills to make you safe and comfortable underwater and at the surface. One of those skills was buoyancy control. Once you start diving for fun you use your buoyancy control devise constantly throughout the dive. Your octopus or alternate air source devise on the other hand is never used unless there is an emergency out of air situation. Reacting properly in an out of air situation can make the difference between a safe dive and a tragedy. If your alternate air source and your BCD inflator devise are one and the same you will always know where to find it in an emergency.

The 5th generation of the Air 2 by Scubapro is a second stage regulator and balanced inflator in a single, compact housing. The Air 2 - 5th Generation builds upon an already superior product. It is lightweight, streamline, and eliminates the need for a backup-regulator. The Air 2's air-balanced power inflator valve means you'll have a steady stream of air, regardless of the pressure in your tank. The Air 2 - 5th Generation leaves you breathing- easy throughout your dives. The Air 2 has a Venturi Initiated Vacuum Assist (VIVA) Flow Vane for safe and uncomplicated use now has a dive/pre-dive switch. This switch allows the regulator mechanism to be set more like that of a standard second stage regulator. The Air 2 - 5th Generation breathes like a dream, rivaling some primary second stage models. It is CE-certified for waters 50°F (10°C) or warmer.

The Air 2 provides one-hand operation for instinctive and simple operation the self-flushing mechanism requires just one push-on-the-purge to clear away all dirt or to purge water. The regulator mechanism is a simple, yet reliable classic downstream demand valve. Air 2 is equipped with a larger hi-comfort ergonomic mouthpiece; soft second-stage cover and one-button purge function. The Regulator's pre-tuned system is housed in a precision molded carbon fiber and techno-polymer case for strength and durability. The demand valve is chrome plated brass with a stainless steel spring and a silicone rubber diaphragm and exhaust valve. The Air 2 comes with a 3/8" threaded 27.56" (70 cm) high-flow low-pressure hose; owner's manual and is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

I got my Air-2 10 months ago because I wanted to cut down on the number of hoses. With a wireless air integrated computer and the Air-2, my rig only had 2 hoses, the LP inflator hose and the hose to my primary 2nd stage. I also hated having a dangling octo at my side. The Air-2 is well engineered and I have no problems with the quality. If I were rating the device as a regulator I would give it five flags.

The reason that I have decided to switch back to a separate octo is that I am convinced that the whole concept of an integrated inflator/regulator is not really practical as a life saving device. During an Intro to tech Class I had to do multiple drills involving sharing air and switching between my primary and secondary 2nd stages. I quickly hooked up my old Octo that day and later bought a plate and wing for the rest of the course.

One of the decisions that I made was to change my recreational rig to use some of the ideas I learned in the Tec course. I now have my octo on a 24" hose hanging around my neck on a necklace and my primary on a 42" hose with a 360' swivel that loops under my right arm so I can twist it around and give it to a needy diver. (Not quite a 7' hose but still a bit longer than a standard primary hose).

I have no problems with people who want to use an integrated inflator/regulator as long as they understand its inherent problems, and as things go, the Air-2 is IMHO the pick of the litter. I would suggest that you confine its use to open water with good visibility and that you practice out of air drills with your dive buddies especially if this is something that you do not regularly do. Surfacing with your head cocked to the left, trying to read your computer and manage the buttons on your power inflator is hard enough during practice. With a panicked diver dragging you to the surface I'll be worse.

I was looking forward to eliminating my octopus. When attached to my BCD the low pressure hose has to be directed to the opposite side of where the retainer clips on my BCD are located. I'm sure this is one of the reasons it does not sit comfortably in the mouth. I have to use a hand to support it. As long as I remember this is an emergency backup I think I will become accustomed to having it there even though it's quite heavy and in the way. If it were a primary I would be extremely unhappy, but I think I can work with this.

Comments about Scubapro Re-Styled Air 2, Combination Octopus/Inflator Regulator, Black/Gray:

I was looking forward to eliminating the octopus and combining my inflator with my backup air supply. It seems to work, but doesn't sit comfortably in the mouth with my BCD. The low pressure airline attaches to the unit on the opposite side that my BCD has clips to hold it. That makes it more challenging to bend toward the mouth. It is also quite heavy which seems unnecessary given the weight of octopi I have used previously. I'm trying to accept it as an emergency go to. If I had to think of this as a primary I would be very disappointed.

Comments about Scubapro Re-Styled Air 2, Combination Octopus/Inflator Regulator, Black/Gray:

Bought this for an upcoming trip to Cozumel – This came as a package deal with my ScubaPro Glide Pro BC. I have read of inflator/octopus combo units and the more complicated emergency procedures – I plan to use this while my buddy (in an out of air situation) uses my A700 2nd stage. While ascending, face each other and shake right hands, if you need to release air from your BC, use a shoulder valve or remove the regulator briefly to use the deflator hose.

I especially like the simplicity of reducing the tubes and complexity of the regulator; however, I am brand new to this and may feel differently when I actually need to use this. Leisure Pro assembled and tested this and all the components I purchased for me which I really appreciated!

All the appropriate serial/manufacture warranties were included and registration was a snap!

      Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
OSCAR Z  This is the only way to go with a second/octo these days. Gone are the days of having your old octo drag on the bottom or hang up on coral. Get rid of your yellow hose and octo and get one of these, especially if you wreck dive and don't want another hose that can hang up on things, or if you like to keep a sleek profile on the reef.
Shopper  Can this be used for cold water dives in the PNW? I will not dive in below 40 degree water.
Frank L  Manufacturer recommends above 50 degrees F.
Annette F  Does the XScuba BC Wash-out Hose fit on the ScubaPro Air 2?
Annette F  The BC Washout Hose by XS does NOT fit the SP Air 2.
