Recently upgraded my old Ocean Reef mask. My girlfriend was curious and she got a full face mask as well. We decided to buy the Ocean Reef communications system and love it. When we were buying it, there was not that much information so I decided to put it out there.
We were going to dive for 7 day in Maui Hawaii. Went to the pool the check out the communication system.
1. It will not work well in a pool. The waves bounce of the walls and we could not understand each other. If you wa...nt to use it in a pool you need dampers. Don't judge system doing a pool dive. I was so afraid that we got a bad system that I called Ocean Reef. They told me about the issue and they were completely correct.
2. Get lubrication Silicone designed for O-rings that will not dry. Pool supply places have this. Make sure that it is not the drying silicone. You will need it to install 9volt battery. It lubes up cover and makes it easier to install water tight battery cover.
2. Get the Ocean Reef frame and arm that screws to the frame. The arm supports the yellow communications unit. The plastic piece that comes with the communications system will break over time. Think of a plastic sheet vs. a thick plastic stem to support yellow hearing piece.
3. Sea water: The quality is that of using a Walkie talkie. Open ocean makes a complete difference to sound quality. Any diver knows how frustrating it is to try to communicate under water.
4. The system beeps when you press the commendations unit. The beep alerts the other person that you are about to talk.
-Wait 2-3 seconds to begin talking. Speak slowly, monotone and at a medium high conversational level. Yelling does not make it better.
-Receiving end: If you hear the beep hold your breath to be as silent as possible. The bubbles and breathing sometimes interfere with hearing the sound clearly. After a couple of tries it gets easier.
It was a pleasure being able to communicate with my dive partner. Our daughters became certified and this was the first time that they went out. It was very comforting to know that we could communicate with each other in case they needed something.
The beep that alerts the other diver is great by itself. Adding the ability to communicate takes it to another level. I highly recommend this system.
Great being able to talk with the surface. Helps to mitigate risk in low visability.
The underwater communication allows a great evolution of the diving activity and an outstanding improvement of the underwater instruction and education. Besides, the underwater communication is also making the diving activity safer and more enjoyable. The new GSM Gdivers transceiver (high performance communication system) expands the diver's ability to communicate with others verbally. The ultrasonic transceiver boasts the autonomy of approximately 30 hours in receiving mode, a range of operation of over 600' (200-250 meters) in calm sea water, lightweight and sleek design. It is a powerful, single channel and inexpensive PTT (push to talk) underwater wireless communication unit. The unit automatically activates upon contact with the water and it uses a 9V alkaline battery with a low battery alarm which beeps every 30 seconds when the battery is low (1-hour runtime remaining).
The GSM Gdivers Communication Unit is the perfect addition to any training class or guided tour and operates on the same 32.768 kHz frequency as all other Ocean Reef units and most popular wireless communication units on the market. GSM Gdivers uses a D-Mic, a special microphone with the housing sealed by hydrophobic membrane which is permeable to air but prevents water from passing through the electronics. The membrane's reduced thickness limits any reduction of the vocal signal. The permeability of the membrane keeps the internal pressure equalized with the external pressure, enabling the microphone to be used at practically any depth.
Each GSM Gdivers comes with the NACS (Neptune Adjustable Communication Support) (code 33054). The patented NACS is an adjustable support arm for the GSM Gdivers and other Ocean Reef underwater communication units. It can be installed on the left side of the mask and prevents the communication unit from hanging on the mask strap. By relieving the weight of the communication unit, the NACS also allows the mask strap to slide easily through the buckle; thus, the strap can stay loose while the mask is donned, and the communicator stays out of the way. The NACS can be adjusted for tilt and distance between the communication unit and the visor. Unit is depth rated for 120' (40 meters) and comes with an owner's manual. For compatible masks see SKU's: OEDNSG, OEDNSGK, PCKNS).

Is there a wireless surface headset available? I gold dredge and being able to talk to the surface would be nice.
Mario C
Surface unit yes, wireless haven't heard about it yet...

Can this unit record? I am looking to make underwater videos with me talking. Does this support on board recording or do you need to purchase the surface unit as well?
Robert W
Our surface unit has an output for headset. Perhaps you could record with that. I would refer you to Ocean Reef. Perhaps they could give you a better answer.
MARTIN W
You will need a surface unit. It doesn't record.
BRANDON F
This unit has no on board recording capabilities. If you're looking to narrate underwater videos in real-time, you should consider securing a mini audio recorder somewhere safe within the mask, away from all mask components. The audio quality between the mask and other receiver units is not video production quality.
Chad W
Sorry but no it will not. I use Bluetooth mic and a recorder in a protective case.
BERNARD B
Does not record. It is basically somewhat of an underwater walkie talkie.
Mary H
Is this one unit, or do they come in pairs?
BRYAN B
The come only as single pieces. The comm unit and the mask do not come together either... so youbwould need 2 masks and 2 comm units
BONNIE L
It is one unit and you need to buy at least two to be able to communicate.
MICHAEL M
It is just one communication unit

whats the channel can a radio be programmed to monitor?
B C
Transducer can not be programed.

I have a dive team for the Sheriff Office and I am interested in these for safety issues can you talk to more than one diver? we have 7 divers on our team thanks
STEVE T
Hello We are a dive team for the Chowan county Sheriff office in N.C. we trained we another full face mask and comm. We now have the ocean reef gsm g divers and love them . there work better for us than the others. good luck Steve Taylor

I am retired from a Sheriff's Office. I personally own one of these for my own use. I have used mine to communicate with multiple divers and the ship at once. Like all devices of this nature they are limited when divers are separated by obstructions. The bracket connecting the mask to the comm gear is crap. Broke and replaced three times in black water ops with strong current. I modified my next bracket myself and have not broken it in two years. Other than that I love the thing. The bracket is called a NACS. Contact the company. I believe they have a line better suited for your needs including visor lights for the mask. Hope this helped and stay safe out there on the streets and in the water.
TINA M
Have not got to try it yet
RYAN N
Yes I have three of them and a boat unit.
MITCHELL M
I do not recommend , the mask is great but the audio is lacking
