I bought 2 of these BCDs, one for me and one for my wife. They are extremely functional and as we do a variety of diving, they fit the bill for us. There are plenty of attachment points for anything you need on a dive. Since we dive a variety of conditions weight distribution can be a problem, we have had no problem with the weight capacity. With my size, I'm 6'4" and 275# I need about 26 pounds with a full 7mm wet suit and this BCD handles it easily. I have used 10# solid weights in the quick release pouches and up to 4 in the tank weight pouches with absolutely no problem. I was surprised with the solid weights that there was no discomfort and the weight dumped and reloaded from the quick release pouch with ease. I do prefer soft pouches as a rule. Unlike some rear bladder BCDs I have not experienced any instability. All and all the Islander 2 is and excellent BCD and well worth the investment. We like them so well that they are not just for travel due to the light weight but we use them for all our diving.

Let me start off by saying that this is a great BCD in the water. It is comfortable to wear, keeps the tank close, and it encourages your staying "horizontal" in an efficient diving position. I move through the water well with this BCD, and it has added 5 - 10 min to my dive times. It is also light and easy to pack.

    So what is the beef!

The weight pockets. They just don't work. I live in the Philippines, and we dive off "bancas"(i.e. outriggers)that are tall in the water. Unlike 90% of the rest of the BCDs in the world, this device has two positions for the weights - in the pockets and on the bottom! That's right - all the big, beefy divers take out their weight pockets and hand them to the boat boys. Then, even if they have a big BCD with a 15 liter tank and lots of gear hanging off, the boys can get it out of the water. But I am kind of beefy myself, and with a 12 liter tank and just a camera in the pocket - I still have to leave 10/12 pounds in the pockets, and it is darn tough to get out of the water. These Filipino boat boys are strong, and they need two to do it. And by the end of three days of 5X dives a day, I was having to offer large tips just to have the guys come around and help me get it out of the water and on the boat.

The other problem, of course, is that the weights bang around in the pouch even with two in there. So, if like me, you are on a wall in a vertical position, and you want to dive down 3-4 meters to get close to a Hawksbill turtle - watch out! When you go from upright to dive, the weights shift in the pocket, and the momentum will probably take you right down past that turtle!

It is frustrating, as the old version (which I specifically ordered) had sleeves for the pockets. I am sure this worked better. But some bright guy thought he had a better idea (or thought he could save some labor and material), and the pockets were discontinued.

Really, its embarrassing. A "light" "travel" BCD that a Philippine Fisherman needs help to pull out of the water. I say design flaw.

And I would send it back if I could!

Comments about Oceanic Islander 2 BCD, Black/Blue:

I owned the Islander BCD for many years and have 100's of dives with it, so when I got a second home in Florida I decided to have a 2nd set of gear instead of hauling it all the time. Purchased the Islander II BCD a month ago and have made 18 dives with it and it works perfectly for me. The pockets of the Islander II are a bit larger than the old style and allows me to carry a finger reel for drift diving found in the Palm Beach area. Both Islanders are lacking D-rings, but I use Cable Ties through the loops on the BCD to attach things like lights and camera stuff.
I would not recommend using the Islander II for cold water diving because of the amount of weight you'd need to carry, but for warmer water and air travel this is an awesome BCD.

Comments about Oceanic Islander 2 BCD, Black/Blue:

I am a Dive Master and in the water every weekend assisting instructors with students or leading dives. I was looking to upgrade my old BCD and wanted something light and durable. I was instantly impressed with the build quality even for being a "Travel" BCD. I will say that becasue of the back inflate it does take some extra effort at the surface but it has exceeded my expectations everywhere else.

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

          Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
CHARLES S  A great travel BCD.
Cathy H  How do I determine the lift capacity I need in a BCD?
DENNIS Y  Generally speaking take the max amount of extra weight you carry plus 4 lbs as a minimum. So if you dive with 15 lbs in a 3mm wetsuit and you normally dive in warm water then you would need at least 18lbs of lift. You want your gear to float on the surface with integrated weights and a full tank of air. Remember at neutral buoyancy on the surface with a full tank you want to be submerged to eye level, so you only need enough lift to bring you head out of the water or to support your gear if you put your gear on at the surface. Considerations for additional lift would include supporting your dive buddy at the surface in case their BCD fails. Plus the more lift you have, the higher you will ride in the water. So give yourself some extra lift when purchasing your BCD. BTW, I normally wear 12 lbs of extra weight when diving in a 3mm wetsuit and I weight about 210lbs, I find the 30lbs lift of the Oceanic Islander 2 BCD to be more than sufficient.
Shopper  Is it can bee add on a Crotch Strap for this bc?
MICHAEL C  don't know, never tried it
