Oceanic has a recall on the New QLR3 Integrated Weight System and trim pockets.

    Dear Valued Oceanic Customer,

Our records indicate that you previously purchased an Oceanic Excursion 2, Probe HLC, or Ocean Pro 1000D BC configured with the QLR3 Weight Pocket system

This email is to inform you that Oceanic has received several reports that weight pockets have unexpectedly released from BCs being used primarily for rental activities.

Extensive analysis by Oceanic engineers has shown that functionality of a limited number of QLR3 weight pocket systems has been adversely affected by the materials used. Inconsistencies in the properties of material rendered it to be unpredictable for use to adequately secure the weight pockets in the BC. Engineers have tested and evaluated replacement material that demonstrates superior performance and locking ability.

Oceanic has initiated a mandatory replacement (retrofit) of all original QLR3 Weight Pockets (with black stiffeners) with newly designed Weight Pockets (with gray stiffeners) that afford better locking.

Original QLR3 Weight Pockets that have black stiffeners must be replaced with the new pockets having gray stiffeners prior to further use.

In conjunction with the retrofit, an inspection of the fixed (female) buckle that secures the weight pocket into the BC is highly recommended. Guidelines are included in the attached Notice.

The Consumer Notice describes the retrofit process and urges you to discontinue use of the QLR3 Weight Pockets until they are replaced with new pockets that can be obtained directly from Oceanic at no charge.

Oceanic urges all owners of Oceanic BCs that have the original QLR3 Weight Pockets (with black stiffeners) to go to the Oceanic website and complete the QLR3 Registration Form to obtain replacement pockets at no charge.

    Go to >> www.oceanicww.com/QLR3

They will send you the replacement pockets at no cost if you do not already have the new ones.

Its a great BCD but the quick release weight system is not fun. Each side maxs out at 10LBS, I had 8LBs
and could not get the thing to snap into place. My buddy had the new Probe from Oceanic with the same weight system and we ran into the same problem. I would recommend never taking the weights out once they lock in. The way it butts up together there isn't any room to push it in more. Test this out once you get it so you don't waste time during your dives.

Comments about Oceanic Excursion 2 BCD, Black:

      On the Plus Side:
This is my primary open water BCD. It's great and doesn't take too much space, which is essential to my continuous traveling.
The side pockets are large enough to carry a vast number of items, yet not too large that it will get on your way.
There are plenty of D-rings to attach all your accessories, although I hate extra hanging stuff during my dives.

      On the Negative Side:
Oceanic did not built a dump valve on the right shoulder side, which sometimes would be nice to have. Nonetheless, I have learned to work without it.
The bottom D rings are a little too far back which renders them almost useless.

Regardless of it's couple of shortcomings, I remain loyal to the Oceanic brand and I think this is a great BCD for any dive.

Comments about Oceanic Excursion 2 BCD, Black:

This is the most comfortable BCD I've ever worn. I'm 5'10", 160 lbs, and 32" waist, and the medium fits perfectly. Seems to be ruggedly built and should last years. Good lift on the surface and great horizontal positioning underwater. I'm using it with Oceanic's Air XS 2 with the 16" corrugated hose.

Comments about Oceanic Excursion 2 BCD, Black:

I have used this product on 11 dives now and it is exactly what I was looking for in a BCD. I dont like the jacket style bcd so this was perfect for me. I found two 2lb weights in the tank trim pockets worked best for me. Having integrated weight pockets is a major plus for me. Its nice to be able to take out and put in the weights easily. Makes carrying stuff to the truck a whole lot easier.

Comments about Oceanic Excursion 2 BCD, Black:

Our 18 yrs old Chute One finally failed... leaking bladder. I ordered the last bladder from Oceanic but it would not get to us in time for our trip to Curacao. So this was the logical upgrade for my 19 yrs old son... and what an upgrade. It performed well during our all our dives... deepest was a wall dive off Blue Bay down to 129'. Only hick up was my son needed to get used to the way the dump weights worked. He did not click in the dump weights properly and they dropped out during our initial orientation dive off Pirate's Bay. Luckily it was a shallow dive. I saw the weights drop and recovered them and we resolved the "user error" at depth(~30') and the issue was resolved w/o farther incident. An excellent BCD for travel(light and package enough), plenty of steel D-rings, plush/quality materials, and capable of most every dive type except for the most extreme of technical dives. I still prefer my Poseidon BESEA W50 for Cave and Wreck penetrations but short of that I might have to borrow my son's new Excursion II for a few of my own aquatic adventures in the future. :)

Comments about Oceanic Excursion 2 BCD, Black:

This is my first rear inflate bcd and I spent a lot of time reviewing gear and getting input from some technical divers. I am relatively new to technical/sar diving but wanted a bcd to "grow" in to. For the price point, this Oceanic is a wonderful choice. It has enough lift for cold water diving, has a functional uncluttered design and offers lots of d-rings for clipping on lights, line cutters, lift bags, spools, etc. The redesigned pockets are a nice improvement over the previous, single roll-out pocket design. The two pockets are large and easy to access, even with 3mm gloves on. I tried on about 5 different bcd's including several more expensive, popular brands. For me this excursion was as comfortable as the zeagle ranger. I am 5'9, 155 with 40" chest and the Medium fits me well.

Frank L  The Excursion 2’s that we are selling now are the new model, with the new QLR3 weight pocket design, but they are all POST-recall. The new QLR3 weight pocket has a gray stiffener (on the back) instead of the black (recalled pocket).
