About Oceanic DataMask HUD Computer with Transmitter

Military Special Forces won't get in the water without it and now you can dive with it. The DataMask Heads-Up-Display (HUD) features an advanced air-integrated dive computer built directly into the mask! Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. The DataMask is not just about having a computer in your mask it is about the many practical benefits provided by truly hands-free diving. The DataMask contains a miniature liquid crystal display (LCD) panel, proprietary digital optic system, microprocessor, depth transducer, wireless cylinder pressure receiver, diver replaceable 3-Volt CR2 lithium batteries, and controlling software. The miniature LCD allows you to keep your eyes focused on the dive while presenting critical dive data including: current depth, elapsed dive time, cylinder pressure, and dive time remaining. The digital optic system provides a clear, highly magnified image of the LCD, which is viewable regardless of environmental conditions and may be seen clearly by the vast majority of people, regardless of vision.

In-mask digital optic system provides a clear, highly magnified image of the LCD, which is viewable regardless of environmental conditions and may be seen clearly by the vast majority of people, regardless of vision, it allows hands-free diving" for greater convenience, enjoyment and safety during the dive. Wireless air integrated technology with patented air time remaining algorithm. Since the only information sent by the wireless transmitter is cylinder pressure and transmitter battery status, the DataMask HUD is actually a fully functional personal dive computer without air integration features when the Receiver is set off. The DataMask HUD acts simply as an 'Air' computer until you tell it otherwise, whether that is this weekend or 2 years down the road. As your training and experience grow, the DataMask HUD is designed to grow with you, being easily programmed for Nitrox mixtures from 21% to 50%.

Following a Nitrox dive, many dive computers calculate your next dive based on a "worse-case scenario", mix of 50% Oxygen and 79% Nitrogen should you forget to reset your actual mix. With FO2 50% Default OFF, your mix remains at the original set point until you change it again. Activate digital gauge mode for dives conducted beyond the limits of the Air/Nitrox computer, free dive mode or NORM mode for Air and Nitrox dives. Computer is equipped with audible alarms; you may choose to deactivate all audible alarms. The Maximum Depth Alarm provides an audible warning upon reaching your planned maximum depth. This is an important safety feature for deeper dives or less experienced divers, and it comes in handy for re-breather diving where you can pre-set another level of safety.

You're on a boat trip and the captain says, "Dive your own profiles, but be back in an hour - we're having lunch!" Just set your DataMask HUD to alert you when your elapsed dive time reaches one hour. Oceanic's trademark nitrogen bar graph design provides the ultimate user-adjustable computer. Want to be a bit more cautious? Make it a personal rule to never enter into the caution zone, or stay one pixel away, or - you get the point. Now you can program the DataMask HUD to do it for you. Set it once and let your computer alert you when your bar graph reaches a pre-determined level. Dive Time Remaining provides a 'real' number in minutes. This calculation considers both nitrogen and oxygen absorption, displaying whichever allows less time. With this unique DataMask HUD feature, you are able to program an audible alarm to alert you upon reaching a pre-set number in minutes.

The 'Turn-Around' Pressure Alarm is a unique patent-pending feature that allows you to pre-program an audible reminder when you reach 1000 to 3000 psi in 250 psi increments (69 bars to 200 bars) in 17.2 bar increments. This helps ensure that you return to your exit point with plenty of air. Air Time Remaining calculations are based on the 'Ending' Pressure Alarm. You define how much air you want in reserve upon reaching the surface. When diving Nitrox, do you prefer your maximum PO2 exposure to be 1.2 ATA? 1.6 ATA? Depending on where you learned and your own personal comfort zone, the answer may be very different from diver to diver. The DataMask HUD lets you set your own limit. Program an audible alarm to sound at the level that you prefer. The DataMask HUD automatically enters Dive Mode when the water contacts are wet, and the unit is submerged past 4' (1.3 meters). To avoid this when swimming or enjoying other water sports, simply set Water Activation Off.

Choose between Metric and Imperial settings for date, temperature, depth and pressure. Set the Automatic Safety Stop Prompt On or Off. Set the Stop Depth to 10', 15' or 20' (3, 4.6 or 6 meters) and the Stop Time to 3 or 5 minutes. Set the Conservative Factor On to further reduce your exposure to decompression sickness. Would you like the backlight to shut off as soon as you release the button? Would you rather it remains on for 0, 5, or 10 seconds? Would you rather it remains on continuously during the dive? Oceanic doesn't need to make these decisions for you; it's your choice. The DataMask HUD even allows you to make modifications to these settings "on-the-fly" during the dive. You have the option to choose at which rate the DataMask HUD samples and stores data for later download to your PC. The DataMask HUD wireless transmitter sends an encoded serial number, so that multiple units may be used side-by-side without interference.

The computer algorithm is a modified Halldanean model using 12 tissue compartments. The data base is Dive Science and Technology (DSAT) based on the research of Rogers/Powel. Decompression capacity of 10' to 60' (3 to 18 meters), audible alarms, calendar/clock, 24 hour time to fly countdown, calculated de-saturation fly countdown, dive mode displays, high O2 and PO2 alarm/warnings, 24 dive on-board log capacity, temperature display, nitrogen and tissue loading and loading bar graphs, no decompression time remaining, O2 time remaining, depth readout up to 330' (100 meters), 0 to 5000 psi (0 to 350 bars) pressure readout and much more. OceanLog PC Download and Settings Upload Software and USB Cable included. Along with DataMask, Transmitter, Batteries, Protective Case, USB PC Interface Cable and Software, Operating Manual, QuickStart Guide (on CD), Laminated Review Card, McNett MicroNet Towel, Sea Buff Pre-Cleaner and Sea Gold Anti-fog. I purchased one of these about 2 weeks ago and have about 10 dives on it up here in the NW. This is probably one of the great advances to come along in a while. All of your critical information is in plain sight all of the time. No more fumbling for your guages while trying to hold a camera, light or use your hands for a task.
The display is easy to read and you can even hear (and see) the alarms when wearing a thick hood.

The two disadvantages are: 1. There is some visibility restriction to the right and the lower right because of the computer. Easy to get used to and you probably want to try and keep your buddy to the left but well worth the trade-off. I have always used a tri-view mask so it took about 2 dives to get used to but I adapted quickly. 2. The computer display can be difficult to read in bright sunlight. Easy to get around by shading the mask with your hand or looking down.

All in all this mask is well worth a look and I am planning to buy a second one for my wife once I can save up the big $$$ again.

Display in mask should be about 1/4 inch higher. It is hard to see sometimes and fogs up easily. I still haven't been able to download it, after numerous tries. Does not have an owners manual. I should have saved my money.

Comments about Oceanic DataMask HUD Computer with Transmitter:

For the first dive the transmitter did not connect to the mask although instructions say they will connect automatically just by opening the tank valve. Nothing else is mentioned in the instruction booklet. Luckily I had an a extra analogue gauge for this first dive with my new Datamask.

Doing some research back home it turns out you have to input a 5 digit code to the mask even though the transmitter has an alphanumeric 6 digit serial number(BM-xxxxxx). Long story short you have to input the last 5 digits into the mask. It now works perfect.
Aside this minor glitch in instructions, the mask works just perfect now. Visibility is reduced by a small percentage but the sacrifice is way worth it.

If you are still wondering if this is a good choice think no more, its WAY worth it. My first stage has now only two hoses plus the transmitter. One hose is for my second stage and the other hose for my BCD that doubles as an octopus. Way less clutter to dive with.

Comments about Oceanic DataMask HUD Computer with Transmitter:

I have been using this mask since it came out 4 or 5 years ago and have hunderds of dives on it. This is probably the best peice of gear to come out in many years. By having your depth, tank pressure and remaining time in front of your face all the time I believe this mask could prevent some of the common causes of diver accidents.

I have found this mask is a great tool when I am teaching. It allows me to concentrate on the students when they are doing thier skills, especially ascents and decents. Also excellent to have depth info and an audible alarm when teaching CESA skills. Valuable tool both for my safety and the students.

This mask is also great for travel. My tropical travel rig includes this Datamask with the tansmitter on my reg, primary reg with and Air2 on my BC for an alternate. Nice, small and light weight. Also no dangling hoses to damage the reef.

Would love to see a bluetooth data link to a laptop for downloading logs. Would also be nice to be able to monitor another transmitter.

Great mask and computer. Much easier to dive with then the other one I had. Nothing to hang off the BC, nothing to remember to put on your wrist, one less hose on the first stage. Just add some defog, rinse and go. Also saves space in the dive bag, making travel easier.

Comments about Oceanic DataMask HUD Computer with Transmitter:

I had GREAT expectations. I struggled a bit with fog to begin with, but once I used the good old toothpaste instead of the stuff that came with the mask, I was fine.
Having all this info available all the time is just great. The PC software is also great, and easy to use. The mask fit me fine, and seems to be of high quality.
The transmitter and mask connect quickly every time.
I was a bit worried since I use my left eye as lead-eye, but I have no problems reading the HUD with my right eye.
One thing I have not found/miss is an indicator of my accent rate. As it is today I get a warning when I am already going too fast. I would like to see a bar or something.
The only real problem I have had, and a major area for improvement, is the connection between the mask and the USB cable. Until you learn how to, it will not work stable. I found that the contact on the mask (the female part) is too wide, so you have to position the male part closest to the glass/front of the mask. This is easiest done if you look into the mask from the front when inserting the contact.
Once I learned this, there was no problems, but it feels unnecessary that a $$$ product does not have a contact that's tight.
I have used the mask for 20+ dives in cold water (4-8 C, or 39-46 F)
