About Oceanic Delta 4.1 FDX10 Diaphragm Regulator, Black

Even with the best laid dive plans, there are times you encounter conditions beyond your control. The Delta 4.1 is one hot regulator ready to take on all challengers with a new stylish look and FDX-10 First- Stage. The FDX10 offers a balanced diaphragm Design. The Balanced Diaphragm, Chrome Plated Marine Brass First Stage Regulator is Inherently-Environmentally Sealed. The benefit of this type of first stage design is that none of the delicate internal parts are exposed to contaminants such as salt, sand, chlorine or pool acids. These environmental contaminants can cause corrosion and mineral deposits to form on the internal mechanism deteriorating regulator performance. At 28 oz (794 g), the FDX10 is one of Oceanic's lightest weight first stages. Two 7/16" threaded high pressure and four 3/8" threaded low pressure ports assure a place for all your necessities and accessories.

As is, the Delta 4.1 second stage, weighing 6.8 oz (192.78 g) it comes ready to use with air or NITROX mixtures up to 40%. The Delta 4.1 is the latest version of the Delta, and is one of Oceanic second stages with (AVS) the Adjustable Venturi System. This allows the diver to adjust inhalation effort so the second stage won't free-flow during shore entries or long surface swims. Additionally, the Delta 4.1 has Oceanic's patented Dynamic Adjustment feature. This lets a diver set breathing resistance. The adjustment only needs to be made once; the Delta 4.1 ma intains the setting no matter the depth of the dive.

The Delta 4.1's ABS/Polycarbonate housing and anodized aluminum cover ring are exceptionally tough. The Delta 4.1 has an orthodontic mouthpiece that produces minimal jaw fatigue no matter the length of the dive. Regulator is equipped with a 30" (76.2 cm) 3/8" Threaded, Owner's Manual and is covered by a 24 month limited warranty.

Comments about Oceanic Delta 4.1 FDX10 Diaphragm Regulator, Black:

I was looking at apek regs because of their reputation and recommendation from a few tech divers.

Then I did a boat load of research. There were four associated deaths with an apek reg, 2 Navy divers in 2007 and 2 coast guard divers in 2006. The Navy then took the apek off the Cold Water approved list and changed it to General service use, not to be used below 130 feet. They are going so far as to phasing out the apek reg from service. At that point there will be no approved Apex regulators for any service in the Navy.

In 2007, after testing multiple regulators, the NOAA had all of its 500 divers switched exclusively to the oceanic Delta 4 for cold water diving.

This was all in a few different articles in dive magazines. I then went and got the Navy's list and checked for myself, there are three approved regulators for cold water diving, two Poseidon, Xstream and Cyklon and Mares Abyss. The Apex is listed with a note stating they are phasing it out. I've heard mixed things about the Xstream and one professional reviewer he found it too easy to breath to the point of "pushing air down my throat".

I called and spoke with someone from the NOAA and confirmed that yes in fact they use the oceanic Delta 4 in all waters of all temperatures. The NOAA uses the Delta 4 in all of its research including cold water diving in Alaska. Per a NOAA rep, "it consistently came up first for meeting all our criteria, and it won't freeze up in cold water".

Divernet rated the Delta 4 as a coldwater reg and compared it to several other regs, including the Apek ATX 50 and the Poseidon Xstream. The review for the Delta 4 was as good as the other two, and the Delta 4's work of breathing is nearly half that of the Xstream and comparable to the Apek.

I have over 50 dives on my Delta 4.1 and am very happy with it. So far I've used it in 47 degree water at 100' with no problems. I'm very confident in these regs and bought two more to use on a tech rig that I'm putting together.

Comments about Oceanic Delta 4.1 FDX10 Diaphragm Regulator, Black:

I bought this reg because my local dive store (an oceanic dealer) talked this up as being a great reg for cold water. I work as an EMS rescue diver on the US Canada border, and as such get to do a lot of ice diving. About 70% of the time the reg will start free flowing as soon as I get to around 30ft. So if you will be doing cold water diving this is not the reg for you.

In warm water it has great performance. This reg it breaths easier than any other regulator I have ever used. Although, if you turn the knob all the way in, it will actually breath too easily and the second stage will not close all the way, resulting in a slight constant bubble out the exhaust port. All in all a good starter reg for people that only dive in warm places.

Shopper  Is Any difference between the FDX10 first stage included in this package and the FDX10 first stage only for $330? Ore specifically, is the FDX10 in this offer DVT and environmentally sealed? Thanks, Mike
DANIEL R  I believe the 4.2 is environmentally sealed and the 4.1 isn't.
Mark W  what is the difference between this and the other listing apart from the lack of swivel?
Frank L  If you are referring to the Delta 4.2 as the other listing, the main difference is cosmetic and the addition of the swivel.
