About Oceanic Atom 3.1 Air Integrated Dive Computer (w/ Trans.)

The Oceanic ATOM 3.1 withstands high pressure - making it perfect for the office. The ATOM 3.1 is equally at home when worn with wetsuit or a three-piece suit. Don't be deceived by its easy to read display and intuitive user interface -- this small format powerhouse delivers all the bells and whistles you would expect from Oceanic. The ATOM 3.1 presents your critical dive data including depth, no-deco time remaining, cylinder pressure, air time remaining, and elapsed dive time - all on a clear easy-to-read display. Featuring a host of new features including Oceanic's exclusive Dual Algorithm Buhlmann ZHL-16c based PZ+, or DSAT based, algorithm, the ATOM 3.1 is a stylish rugged device that can be worn as watch topside and can monitor up to 3 wireless transmitters and Nitrox mixes underwater.

The ATOM 3.1 is powered by Oceanic's exclusive dual algorithm allowing you to choose the decompression algorithm basis that best suits your diving needs without compromising safety. Wireless air integrated technology allows streamlined and accurate monitoring of tank pressure. When coupled with the transmitter the ATOM3.1 provides the following unique features:
Air Time Remaining (ATR):
The ATR feature calculates current depth, tank pressure, breathing rate, ascent time, and decompression status to tell exactly how much time you can remain underwater. The ATOM 3.1 dive computer continually displays ATR via a numerical bar graph in addition to cylinder pressure. You may also display ATR in oversized digits at any time with the press of a button.

Dive Time Remaining (DTR):
Dive Time Remaining, like air time remaining provides a 'real' number in minutes. This calculation combine's air time remaining, nitrogen and oxygen absorption, displaying whichever allows less time. The Oceanic ATOM 3.1 has 4 operating modes: WATCH (alternate time, chrono, daily alarm, countdown timer), NORM (air and nitrox), GAUGE (with run timer) and FREE (tracks calculations to allow switching between NORM and Free). Switch between 3 independent transmitters, with up to 3 nitrox mixes to 100% O2. Improved user-interface with "Step Back" history - allows forward and backward navigation through menus and settings. Safety stop - auto (with adjustable stop time and depth) + manual (run timer) and buddy pressure check allows you to receive and monitor up to 3 independent transmitters with up to 3 nitrox mixtures to 100% O2.

Single button access to "last dive" display (max depth & bottom time), deep stop with countdown timer, customizable audible alarms with flashing red LED light, data retention - allows between dive battery replacement, history mode includes total number of dives, max depth, total dive hours, and lowest temp and OceanLog PC download and settings upload software and USB Cable included. The computer is firmware update ready. The computers altitude algorithm is Buhlmann, IANDT, RDP (Cross) with altitude correction and O2 limits based on the NOAA tables and provides altitude adjustability from 3,001' to 14,000' (916 to 4,200 meters). The Computer has an operational depth of 330' (100 meters). When in low light conditions the ATOM 3.1 is equipped with Ocean-Glo backlight with an adjustable duration function. The computer is powered by a CR2430 lithium battery that can provide up to 300-dive hours. The computer allows battery hot swap to retain dive data along with a graphic low battery indicator. The Transmitter is powered by a user Replaceable 3.6-Volt CR2 Battery. The ATOM 3.1 has a 24 dive memory for NORM/GAUGE. The computer comes with a comprehensive owner's manual and is covered by a 24 month limited warranty.

I purchased the Atom 3.0 complete with transmitter before my dive trip in September. I have been skeptical about the wireless dive computers, but decided to give it a try. I have to say it performed great. I had no issues with keeping a connection between the tank transmitter and the watch. I tend to keep my arms crossed when I am diving and I was able to keep a connection in this position throughout all of my dives. The only time I lost a connection was when I had to adjust my fin strap and when we were trying to get a lion fish. Within a 1-2 seconds of returning my arm back to the normal position in front of my chest, the signal would pick right back up. The features of the watch are great. I love being able to see my air time remaining. Very nice feature. When you first hook up your 1st stage to the tank and turn on the air, all you have to do is just hold down top left mode button for a second and it switches to dive mode and shows you the air pressure. My only complaint is the Oceanic software to download your dives. It definitely needs some refinement. Although once you download the data, you can export it and view it in Excel or any other data application. I found it really neat to see all of the details of the dive. Prior to this computer I had used an Oceanic Geo for 3 years. I found the new Atom to function pretty much the same with the added step back feature that allows you to go forward and backward through menus. Overall I found it pretty simple to use, but I am a pretty technical person. I can understand how some people may find it complicated to use. It is a very feature rich device. Overall I love the device. I would definitely recommend it to others. So far I have only used it on a week long dive trip, so I'll be anxious to see how the reliability is over time.

Dive computer is not intuitive at all. Takes minutes to change setting that should take seconds to preform. If you have a Mac, software that comes with the unit does not work. I nice little app, from the Web I recommend is called MacDive. The program works and graphics are better than the manufactures software.

Should have gotten a Mares Matrix, since I like their dive graph feature.

Comments about Oceanic Atom 3.1 Air Integrated Dive Computer (w/ Trans.):

Have done over 50 dives with this DC. It has functioned flawlessly without any loss of hoseless transmission. The display is clear and easy to read. The backlit worked very well during night dive. Display layout is perfect with the Air Time Remaining next to the pressure and the NDC time remaining next to the Elapsed Dive Time. Think that this should be the standard format for all dive computer.

The only hardware flaw is my DC always reads about 1 degree lower than that of my buddy using the same type of DC. The dive log program that came with the DC and also the updated version from Oceanic are buggy. This has been remedied by using a 3rd party program, Diving Log 5.0, which can sync with the Atom 3. The user's manual is hard to use. Suggest just going with the quick reference and use the manual for details if needed.

Overall, hope that Oceanic will continue to produce and support this model.

Comments about Oceanic Atom 3.1 Air Integrated Dive Computer (w/ Trans.):

        Usage:
        - Fastest way to use this DC is to use the quick reference guide and consult the manual only if you need more details.
        - Pressing S (Select) for 2sec to start modifying of any parameters does not work. It has to be Light button followed by the Select button.
        - The Oceanlog 2.x software that comes with the DC has bugs. It will not allow changes to many of the data entries.
        - The newer Oceanlog software downloaded from Oceanic website also has problem. The Utility Set-up will not sync properly and will skew the set-up.
        - I ended up using the supplied CD Oceanlog program just for doing set-up and bought Diving Log 5.0 to dive logs.

        Plus:
        - Transmitter link is quite reliable.
        - Display format is intuitive.

        Deltas:
        - Did 8 dives over the weekend and scratched the face badly during a couple of shore dives. Hope Oceanic will supply a good protector for the DC. Anyway, maybe I will just pocket the DC during shore dives.
        - Buddy and I each own one. Our temperature readings differs quite a bit, 22C vs 25C.

Other than the above, I like this DC and will continue using it. I will recommend it but users better be prepared to work around the problems and solutions mentioned above.

Comments about Oceanic Atom 3.1 Air Integrated Dive Computer (w/ Trans.):

Did 8 dives over the weekend with this watch and I absolutely love it. This is my first air integrated watch and it worked without a hitch. Never lost my signal underwater. Knowing how much air I had remaining with a estimated air made me really think about my breathing and extended my dive.

The included dive log software is pretty poor. It's very basic and ugly. They really should develop something more polished especially since these computers are so expensive. Luckily there are other software alternatives out there.

However, I still think the computer itself is great and well worth the investment. 5 Flags!
