About Mares Abyss 22 Regulator

The Abyss (MR22) diaphragm first stage features the DFC system and a replaceable HP seat connector. The exclusive MARES DFC system featured minimizes the intermediate pressure drop which occurs in all regulators during the inhalation phase. This pressure drop is greater when higher airflow is demanded of the regulator. The DFC system substantially reduces breathing effort and inhalation resistance, especially during deep dives and under high air flow conditions.

The high pressure poppet was designed for a "2 year or 200 dives" service interval; double the high pressure seat life standard! Compact body, in a modern and smart style, it is made of hot-forged nickel-plating and chromed brass. It is fitted with a preferential intermediate pressure port for connection to the primary second stage, plus 3 other 3/8" threaded LP ports and 2 HP ports with 7/16" UNF thread. The latter are inclined at a 45° angle to allow a more ergonomic layout of hoses.

The balanced diaphragm, first stage regulator is inherently environmentally sealed. The benefit of this type of first stage design is that none of the delicate internal parts are exposed-to-contaminants such as salt, sand, chlorine or pool acids. These environmental contaminants can cause corrosion and mineral deposits to form on the internal mechanism deteriorating regulator performance. A diaphragm first stage regulator requires less-maintenance then regulators that allow contaminates to enter the internal mechanism. For extreme demanding conditions, such as use in cold or contaminated water, the Abyss second stage is made of nickel and chrome-plated brass. These materials offer a number of benefits: ruggedness and thinner walls which allow compact dimensions obtained without using smaller-diameter diaphragms; this result in reduced water drag. The second stage ha an anti-freeze function, which is enhanced by the "radiator action" of the metal.

The Abyss with its Vortex Assist Design (V.A.D.) system: all Mares second stages offer the unique patented VAD system. The air bypass tube conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a low pressure area in the center this keeps the diaphragm down during inhalation, giving very sensitive and easy breathing at all depths. The second stage cover features the new "mesh-grid" system for water inflow and outflow, which provides a further performance improvement.

Furthermore, the compact and ergonomic exhaust tee ensures superior hydrodynamic performance and reduced exhalation resistance. The mouthpiece is made of soft hypoallergenic silicone: limiting jaw fatigue and offering a secure fit even after very long dives. Mares developed the Superflex hose after many years of testing and research. The results achieved far surpassed the tests required by EN250. Hose is extremely light weight and exceptionally soft, guaranteeing the maximum freedom of movement and further reducing jaw fatigue. Superflex hose is 1/2" Threaded High Flow hose and is 29.5" (75 cm) in length. Mares Abyss comes with an owner's annual.

Great Reg

This is a great regulator. The mouth piece that it came with caused jaw fatigue, but changing it to a custom mold one took 2 mins to do, so I can't consider it a con. It may make a weird "farting" noise when breathing above water, but it's nothing to be concerned about unless it makes the same sound under water, mine doesn't. I've been using it for about 7 months now. Breathing upside down or face up toward surface is not labored at all and overall, imho, it's definitely worth every penny.

Randomly freeflows continuously

Breathing was good. Second stage randomly freeflows during breathing and continues after each new breath. Would not recommend for deep diving. Very inconsistent.

No fancy adjustments to worry about, never failed me. Had it for 3yrs now and it still works like when first used it out from the box.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
WILLIAM M  Great price. Needed spare reg for pony.
GERALD O  After a great deal of research I purched this regulator and I love it.
THOMAS S  Mares reputation, sturdy construction, nice look, ease of breathing even below 100 ft.
TOM S  Researched the reg liked what i read and again Leisure Prohad the best price. Love this reg it is easy breathing in all positions. Very comfortable mouth piece. Almost forget its there
PHILIP P  My first regulator. I did a whole lot of research before I bought this and I made an excellent choice. Mares was Dacor and they know a thiing or two about regulators. Comfortable, reliable and durable. This will likely be the last regulator I will ever have to buy.
Emad M  I am worried that the regulator weight feels heavy during diving in comparison to the Prestige 15x, even so is it still worth to go for it and why ?
GABRIELA L  Sure what other regulators feel like, this is the only one I've used. It is little bit heavier, I'm small female, sometimes I just fox it couple times during the dive, but nothing serious enough for me to look for another one. Breathes easily and so that's what matters the most to me.
Emad M  Thanks. This really helps. I will go for it. It is more durable and supposedly eliminates the mouth dryness felt with polymer regs. I will just couple it with mares Jax mouthpiece
SUSAN L G  The prestige 15x is lightweight polymer vs the abyss 22 metal. Advantages of polymer regs include less weight while travelling, less jaw fatigue. Polymer regs are great for short dives. Long dives can make your mouth feel very dry. Metal regs reduce the dry mouth problem. I dive mares abyss. I use an aqua lung comfobite mouthpiece to relax the jaw. For vacations I take my polymer mares. Both are tools for different needs. Evaluate your needs and budget to make an informed choice. Both regs are excellent performers.
Emad M  When u say short dived. How short do u mean. My dives are all recreational when on vacation . Almost always lasts for 1 hour. And I dive 3 to 4 dives a day for 5 or 6 days every few months. I really appreciate u taking the time to reply. I am more inclined to buy the abyss naturally fir it's higher durability and less moth dryness . It WI be my first set. I always rent regulators. But I got tired of jaw fatigues and I feel this will be the only setback for the abyss. Does it feel that much heavier than the prestige when diving?
Daniel R  Why is the primary Low Pressure on the back side? I own this regulator and the 2nd stage has it's own 1/2 inch hose but is located where the octopus normally goes. I wanted to swap the sides out before I realized that. Not a big deal, just wondering if this is normal for this?
MAYCO G  It was designed like that nice reg
WILLIAM H  Apparently for better transmission with hoseless pressure sensors for computers, that port is in a different place. I does seem to make sense that way.
