About Mares Dragon Airtrim BC with MRS Plus Weight Pockets, Black

Mares' new Jacket Style Dragon Bladder design is tightly tailored to reduce drag, placing much of the air cell around the tank. The air cell is contoured to greatly minimize the feeling of the bladder underneath your arms, and gives comfortable surface flotation. All that ergonomics and still has a lift of 44 lbs (20 kg) size lg.

Innovative Protective buoyancy Cover Material: Superior combination of 3D Alutex net adds protection, abrasion resistant, with a smooth shield fabric covering. The Air Cell is made of durable (420) Cordura denier. The Mechanical Release System (MRS Plus), Mares evolution of the first mechanical weight system introduced to the market, incorporating a newly designed buckle system, one pull movement to release your weights. Ergonomically shaped pockets to form to your waist, with large, zippered opening allows for easier insertion of weights. Max load of 13 lbs (6 kg) with most sizes. Inside Velcro to section the pocket in case you don't use the full capacity.

The Dragon has two rear trim weight pockets holding up to10 lbs (4.5 kg) total. These pockets are positioned in the lower part of the BCD for better upright body efficiency at the surface, and a more streamlined profile. Back Protection System (BPS Plus) patented dual position lumbar capability. Heavily padded in either position, you can double the padding for increased lumbar support or extend the length of the padding depending on body shape for ultimate pre-dive comfort.

Smart D-ring position with large AISI 304 Stainless Steel rings, 2 bent: 2 upper and 2 lower that are positioned intelligently within your downward vision also functioning as leverage while inserting the weight pockets. Comfort is paramount with the Dragon with its independent harness which allows the air bladder to inflate away from the diver eliminating the crushing effect of BCD's that have fixed harnesses. Elastic cummerbund secures the BCD in place and adjusts for wetsuit compression at depth. QAS-Quick Adjust System, change the length of the cummerbund for a better customized fit. A neoprene padded collar and internal plush lining also adds comfort.

For perfect buoyancy underwater, the first and only pneumatic system (patented) that revolutionizes and simplifies buoyancy control during the dive, making it precise and immediate in any position and under any condition. It features a single intuitive and ergonomic control to inflate and deflate the BC. Two oversized buttons, which are easy to operate and allows for easy and accurate buoyancy control. The exclusive "Twin Exhaust Valve" technology, patented by the Mares research laboratories, allows the Airtrim deflation button to simultaneously control both of the pneumatic exhaust valves: that way, it's possible to deflate the BC simply by pressing a single button, without worrying about your position in the water.

With adjustable chest strap, two angled zippered pockets, rugged carry handle, dual position hose clip for your gauges, shaped shoulder straps adapt better to alleviate pressure on the shoulders, safety whistle and lots of lift 44 lbs (20 kg) in the large size makes this one great BCD. Dragon comes in four sizes and has a 24 month limited warranty.

I have been diving for 30 years and in the water this is by far the most comfortable B.C. I have ever used. It allows you to move with excellent freedom. The air bladder being in the back eliminates any feeling that you are being squeezed by your B.C., even when you have a lot of air in it. That being said, it does have a few draw backs. The integrated weight pockets are a bit awkward to insert the weights into, especially if you have any air in the B.C. If you have the weights loaded into the B.C. it makes it fairly heavy on land and extremely heavy when you have it attached to a tank. This makes moving your equipment around on the boat a bit of a hassle. This raises my next minor complaint. I dive off of my own boat and generally like to throw my rig into the water and gear up in the water. This B.C. makes it a bit of a challenge to do that laying on your back as it wants to constantly pitch you forward into a face down position. This also applies to floating on the surface waiting for your dive buddy. I have found that by putting about 25% of my weights (2 pounds) in the back pockets I can balance it out fairly well. The draw back to this is that the weights in the back pockets can not be easily dropped, meaning that you would have to carry them with you to the surface in an emergency ascent. The "airtrim" system is nice and only takes a few dives to get comfortable using. For making my initial descent, I do find it easier to pull on the dump valve as the "airtrim" system lets the air out of the B.C. very slowly. This makes it work well for fine tuning your buoyancy during a dive. I have not had this B.C. long enough to comment on its durability, but it does seem to be well made. As others have stated the manual inflation tube is coiled into the left pocket making the pocket effectively useless for storage. The right pocket is fairly large and should be more than adequate for most recreational divers. On the whole I would say that the pro's out weigh the con's and I would recommend this B.C. for anyone looking for a B.C. with excellent in water comfort and the easy buoyancy control offered by the "airtrim" system.

No one that I know or dive with maintains and cleans their dive gear better than me. with this said, I wish very much that the Dragon B/C was more dependable. It is extremely comfortable and when it is working properly it is a pleasure to dive. But more times than not the deflater side of the airtrim system does not work. On numerous dives, one or both of the airtrim dump valves fail to operate and I am left with only the one manual dump valve to establish buoyancy and control accent. I would like to see it redesigned with larger storage pockets, a more dependable inflater/deflater and multiple manual dumps.

Comments about Mares Dragon Airtrim BC with MRS Plus Weight Pockets, Black:

I bought this BC once I was OW certified. I love it. It's great to not have to worry about putting your arm up to deflate your BC. I usually keep my hand on the controls so there's no searching for the inflator/deflator hose. I like the two deflate ports, but wished there was a second manual deflate port on the bottom in case of a failure with the AT system.

Wow this BCD is amazing, love the fit and all the D ring attachments. The airtrim system is great, no matter what position you are in the water you can still affect Bouency control without shifting your position. The integrated weight system is so easy to use especially if you need to extract the weight system in an emergency. All in all I loved the BCD though in saying that the only grime I have is with the two pockets. Because of the integrated weights there seems to not be a lot of room within the pockets themselves other then that great BCD :-)

Only thins is the MRS weight system. You cannot seem to put anything into the pocket with the MRS weights in place and the slightly inflated.

Steve S  No, this is a jacket style BC. The difference is the location of the inflator which is on the side front.
