About Mares Abyss 42 Metal Regulator

Abyss has long been a staple name in high performance, coupled now with elite small first stage MR42T: the best for a unique high caliber set up The evolved design of Abyss second stage adds more metal on front cover and hose protector to achieve even further dependability in the most difficult diving conditions

The high performance MR42T first stage is combined with an all metal second stage, for minimum weight and size The all chrome plated marine brass first stage regulator is a balanced diaphragm design which is environmentally sealed The diaphragm membrane transmits the pressure changes to the internal mechanism eliminating the need for the surrounding water to enter the intricate mechanism The benefit of this type of first stage design is that none of the internal parts are exposed to contaminants such as salt, sand, chlorine or pool acids These environmental contaminants cause corrosion and mineral deposits to form on the internal mechanism deteriorating regulator performance

The Abyss 42 Metal uses Tri-Material Valve Technology This patented technology created to optimize performance, safety and reliability The valve is covered with a hard Polyurethane (PU) and the sealing surface is a layered with a soft PU for a perfect seal Tri-material (brass, soft PU and "heavy-duty" PU) reaches new levels of durability

Another unique feature of the first-stage is the Dynamic Flow Control (DFC) The DFC system minimizes the intermediate pressure drop during inhalation, making it possible to use a simpler more reliable second stage No type of manual adjustment of the second stage is necessary due to the consistency derived from a first stage that guarantees a stable flow of air, even under extreme conditions

All metal technology second stages have superior performance over plastic second stages, especially in cold water, due to the high thermal conductivity that limits the freezing effect Additional benefits are the improved durability, the longer working life and less dry mouth from breathing compressed air This all metal second stage is made of marine grade brass

The patented mesh design of the second stage cover reduces the pressure of water flowing onto the regulators diaphragm and minimizes free-flow Even in a strong current it eliminates the need for a knob to de-tune your air delivery system- advance technology through basic physics

All Mares second stages are a reliable downstream valve design and offer the unique patented Vortex Assisted Design (VAD) system The air bypass tube conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a low pressure area in the center that keeps the diaphragm down during inhalation, for very sensitive and easy breathing at all depths

Mares developed the Superflex hose after many years of testing and research The results achieved far surpassed the tests required by EN250 Hose is extremely light weight and exceptionally soft, guaranteeing the maximum freedom of movement and further reducing jaw fatigue Superflex hose is 3/8" Threaded hose and is 29 5" (75 cm) in length Mares Abyss 42 Metal comes with a limited lifetime warranty

Comments about Mares Abyss 42 Metal Regulator:

1st stage a nice improvement over my old Mares proton set up. More compact allows easy tank valve access with the vertical orientation versus horizontal. Smooth breathing through depth changes where older could hiccup a bit. Light, good looking reg.

My only knock is that it was a little big compared to my old Proton. That is why I ding it a flag, give me all of this in a small package and I would be totally hooked.

Comments about Mares Abyss 42 Metal Regulator:

I went from scubapro to this! You won't be able to even imagine the difference in the effort it takes to breathe. I honestly will not go down again with out an abyss reg around my neck.

Don't be cheap; get the superflex hoses and the octo abyss to match it. It's all metal too!

Comments about Mares Abyss 42 Metal Regulator:

This reg has been with me from 30ft to 100ft, in calm water, big surf, fighting current, scootering,... And there's one thing I can always count on: it always delivers as much air as I need and I never feel like I'm breathing through a reg. Some people say it wastes air doing so. Personally I disagree. I use as much air on it as my two buddies using top of the line scuba pro reg (we all use steel 80 HP and averaged dive profile is 40ft, 62*F, 60min, 2300psi used) or as when I use my Aqualung Titan or Oceanic Delta 4.

It is a bit heavy, quite a bit compared to other high end reg on the market. Using the regular SOFT mouth-bite makes this obvious: the reg couldn't be up right in the water, it's so heavy it bends the mouth piece down. Using the Aqualung Comfo-Bite mouth piece does make a big difference. I don't really feel the weight of the reg, even on the 3rd dive of the day. In the trade off for the heavy weight, this reg is solid. I do a lot of rocky shore dive and this reg takes a lot of hits without losing its performance.

It free-flows easily on the surface if you don't keep it upside down, but it's nothing big to me.

In short, this reg has very high performance, high durability, with minimal maintenance. It is a good investment if you do a lot of rocky shore diving.

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

        Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
WALTER H  I am very disapointed with this regulator. The breathing resistance at depth is not any better than my $100 octopus. in addition, the exhaust goes straight into your face when you ar not in a prone position looking straight down. This is extremely annoying and would make it impossible to use for photography. needless to say, at ~$600, it was a total waste of money. i expected more from Mares.
Stephanie E  can a commercial diver use this?
Monica s  Depending on what the person is doing, yes. Heavy silt conditions and you may want environmentally sealed.
chris l  Would you get this reg over the mares prestige 22 dpd reg?
Monica s  This is a higher performing reg with a metal 2nd stage so better for cold water, lessening dry mouth, and being more durable. It depends on what type of diving your doing and if you want to justify the price point. They are both good regs, the 42 abyss is just better performance.
