a wetsuit for those who hate wetsuits

By dp

I hate wetsuits. And I hate being cold. Quite the connundrum. I hate putting then on, I hate pulling them off, I hate that feeling when you get a gush of cold water in your suit, I hate the smell of neoprene, I hate the velcro catching my hair, I hate back zips... My least favorite part about suiting up for a dive -- the wetsuit. The lavacore takes away ALL of these unpleasantries. You feel like you are putting on your favorite fleece. It's light weight and easy to put on (no matter the con...

Wife loves it!

By SFC_Swede

I had purchased a Henderson thermoprene shorty for my wife for our first Caribbean dive vacation. Because of her claustrophobia, the neck seal for her wasnt a real smart choice. The Dive Operation we were using allowed her to use the Oceanic Lavacore, and she was immediately in love with it. Her diving improved, the second she used the Lavacore, as she was no longer focused on the constricting nature of the neck seal of the Henderson. She also raved about its comfort, and ease of wear. W...

Lavacore suits are made with an exclusive Polytherm Tri-Laminate. Ideal for use as a primary exposure suit in warmer waters or as a supplemental undergarment in colder waters. Q&A

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Fuadah Nazri A  Is this Lavacore backzip full suit fleece-lined? The front zip one definitely is described as fleece lined. But the backzip one is silent on that. Can anyone help?
ANDREW K  I bought both the front and back zip models for my wife. They are both fully fleece lined (though it isn't exactly thick material) except for the cuffs and neck.
Petrus S  Yes, it is.
JULIE S  Yes, the backzip suit I bought in 2014 is lined with fleece.
COURTNEY F  Yes it does
DEB B  Mine has the same material as the front zip.
DEBBIE S  It is made of the same fkeece-lined material and in my Opinion much easier to get in and off by yourself than the front zip. When I switched to back zip, I needed 1 size larger. But that was 2+ years ago so don’t know if they’ve changed the sizing.
RICHARD R  Yes, same fleece type material as is found on all or most Lavacore suits is on the women’s back zip full suit.
Stormy C  The inside of both is fleece-like. The fabric traps warmth. It’s negatively buoyant so you can reduce the amount of lead you wear. I wore mine on Bonaire for 10 days. It was great.
Shopper  I'm a new diver. By reading the previous questions, it sounds like this suit isn't worn alone. It's intended to be a layer? I want to purchase a suit for the tropics.
Petrus S  If you're using it and diving in Asia where the water is warm, typically between 28 and 30 degrees Celcius, using this as a stand-alone suit is more than enough. Enjoy your dives and stay safe.
Allen M  This suit can be worn alone in the tropics no problem. It is very warm and and flexible. After wearing a lavacore wetsuit I will probably never go back to wearing a neoprene wetsuit. In the winter in the tropics I wear a lavacore sleevelest vest with a hood under the full lavacore wetsuit only when the water temp drops to 77 degrees. Most of the divemasters I work with in Cozumel wear the lavacore wetsuit.
DEBBIE S  It's perfect for the tropics, which is where I wear mine and love it. I previously had a front zip and decided to change so I could get into/out of my wetsuit unassisted. I found the back zips running smaller, so you might want to check sizes carefully. But no worries since Leisure Pro makes exchanges easy if you get the wrong size.
DEBBIE W  I get cold pretty easy so I use this suit for tropical water. Mostly in deeper waters. If you wear a long sleeved rash guard you should be fine. I also have the long sleeved lavacore top and shorts that I wear for shallow dives.
YAN G  It can be worn alone, it really depends on the individual.
DEB B  It is fine wearing alone, similar to a 3mm. It feels tight when first putting it on but gets bigger as it gets wet. The wrists are extremely tight. It is fine alone above about 80 degrees. For colder water I layer.
JD S  It can be worn alone.
JULIE S  I wear this suit alone when diving in the Caribbean. I'm warm in water over 80.
Julie S  I bought this suit in the size indicated by the size chart, and I fall right in the middle of both height and weight. But the suit seems very tight when I try it on, even in the arms and legs. How tight sould this suit be when dry??
Steve S  The suit should be snug when dry, but not tight. You don't want extra material or air pockets in the suit. If you feel you need to exchange for the next size, please call Customer Service at 800.637.6880 and ask for a PFF Guarantee exchange.
DEBBIE S  I found these suits to run considerably smaller than the front-zip ones. It could be the more tailored cut. So I just chose to put a skin on, first, and the Lavacore suit then slipped on easily and felt much better. If I hadn't been leaving right away on a dive trip, I probably would have exchanged it for the next larger size.
DEBBIE W  You don't want it to feel like it's cutting off your air supply or your circulation It will give some when it's wet. I really like mine. I wore it under a 7mil for quarry diving. It does the job of keeping you warm. I wear an 8 to 10 in most things but I got a 14. I am a bit on the busty side.
terry q  What is the equivalent mm thickness of this suit? Is it good for an outer layer?
JOE S  LavaCore has a normal equivalency of 1.5 mm when worn by itself. When you layer these garments under a wetsuit, it will channel the water better and give you more of a 2mm equivalency. Take a 3mm neoprene wetsuit and makes it more like a 5mm. The product does not work properly if you wear it outside of another suit. You would need to layer on the inside.
Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
SHANNA M  I liked it while trying it on in a dive shop bit they did not have my size.
PATRICIA K  our friends dive in Lavacore and Love it. Planning a trip to Bonaire and wanted protection but something less restrictive.
