For reef fishing in the FL Keys we use the gun with just one band. This is a good basic gun for reef fish like snapper, grouper, and hogfish. The only con is that the line is difficult to reload in the water after a shot, esp. with gloves - it takes practice. No signs of corrosion after a year of use.

This was my varry first Speargun and i was so happy i got it i did not care what people told me about the gun untill after a few trys in the ocean and the first thing that i did not like about the gun was the rope thats attached to the shaft to the gun it, only lasted up to 4 weeks of use after i shot a fish and it ran in to a hole and the rope rubbed agenst the reef and broke. Another thing that was not good was the muzzle that the shaft shot through, it made the gun more unaccurate, because the muzzle was BIG! and the shaft just moved around when i was diving.but i was just a rooky then untill i want to buy myself a better spear gun so i saw how Junk it was so i bought my self a Omer Exalibur 2000 130cm long (51 inches)it was only[$] you should only buy this gun if its your first time Speargun Fishing. Comments about JBL D8 Super Carbine Spear Gun (D-8):

I purchased this gun as a step up from using a pole spear/sling, which I had used for 20+ years.

    What I liked:
    - Past LeisurePro purchase experience (including chat)
    - Power option of two bands
    - Range (chosen based upon multiplying the length of the gun by three)
    - Simplicity/Sturdiness of construction (truth be told, most spear guns are quite simple)
    - Included, double-dongle rock point
    - Did a great job on a beautiful, 22+ inch, red grouper @ a range of about 8 feet.
    - Loaded the gun with both bands (maybe a little overkill for the previously mentioned harvest) and there was no adverse recoil.

    What I would have liked:
    - A grip extension/butt to help with loading (this was not a surprise, I just wish it had one)
    - Clip to attach a lanyard/strap.
    - Sealed tube, or more/an orifice to aid in flushing/cleaning.
    - Better shock cord/line retention system (I will rig up something better, garage R&D ;P ).

    Overall:
    - I would definitely recommend this gun with the following caveat, it is an entry level gun.
    - This is not a complaint, but the bands are difficult to pull (more resistance, more power). I would recommend cocking on the peck rather than sternum, unless you have a chest pad.
    - Are there better (more expensive) guns out there? Yes! Are there better values out there? Perhaps... However, this is a great value on a gun made by a company in the U.S. (if customer service is ever needed I hope this will be a benefit). I will wind up making this gun my "own", that is, modify (already have) what I desire to make me happy.

Comments about JBL D8 Super Carbine Spear Gun (D-8):

I am buying another spear gun today here and decided to tell you why. As others said, it's basic and there is nothing wrong with that. The good: It shoots - ive killed dozens of ling cod, kelp greenling and kabazon with it. Its double-band which really just means that you have a ready backup for when the band breaks. I usually use only one band and its been plenty to nail fish up to 10-pounds. The Bad: The gun is pretty tricky to load underwater due to a complete lack of a stock you cannot see the notch that the band needs to hook into and I have scraped skin a few times off my hands trying to do it by feel. The trigger mechanism feels flimsy and although I have not had it come apart or unintentionally fire, but I can see how it will happen soon. By far the worst part of the gun is the string mechanism which lets the string come off all the flipping time! I have gotten tangled in my own string and usually have to re-pinch it 3 times between every shot. I have finally given up and just keep the string coiled in my left hand when I fire with my right.

Comments about JBL D8 Super Carbine Spear Gun (D-8):

The way the line is fixed is poorly engineered. While swimming, due to the drag with water, the line comes off and starts floating around. This is both a pain because you have to re-wind the line every five minutes and it is dangerous because the line could get stuck on your arm and injure you when you shoot.

Comments about JBL D8 Super Carbine Spear Gun (D-8):

I wrote a review on this speargun three years ago. The gun is still working well and has put many fish on the table. I wash the gun in fresh water after use and there are no signs of corrosion. We use the gun with just one band and I decided to shorten the line so that it makes only one loop back to the handle. This makes reloading MUCH easier. I would NOT shorten the line if I used both bands. Good hunting.

noel t  can I rerplace the handle on this gun?
GERASIMOS A  Yes, you can replace the handle if you wish -- I assume you need to install one from a different manufacturer as the handle/mechanism that comes with the D8 speargun is worthless. Most likely you will need to drill new holes but this shouldn't be a problem. However, there are not many handles available that fit a 25mm tube. I could only find one made by BEUCHAT (ARCA series) http://www.beuchat.fr/index.php?id=35&cat=2&sscat=13&prod=129 However, you will need to replace the spear as well. JBL spears are not compatible with european models. Also the aluminum tube of JBL D8 is fairly thin and can bend easily. If I were you I'd rather buy the Beuchat speargun. It offers better quality/value in the beginner category. In case you decide to go along with the purchase consider making the JBL tube waterproof by installing at both ends rubber plugs coated with epoxy glue. Happy hunting!
