Wow, coolest toy ever

If only my other gear could be as cool as this lazer pointer. I zip tied it onto my dive light, which allows me to first aim it at my buddy's eyes and then turn it on. It's more of a surprise this way. Now I just need to find a good way to mount it on my spear gun. Bottom line, between this and my Oceanic Datamask I'm set for life.

visible only in very low ambient light

The beam is very hard to spot if any ambient light is present. Range is very poor. I have taken this laser pointer on three dives and have not been able to find any use for it other than a tank banger! It has limited usefullness at night at close range, but if you can still point things out to your buddy better with a narrow beam flashlight. I am not satisfied at all with this product. On my last use, the laser emitter broke when I twisted the light to the on position.

Absolute rubbish

By

I bought this to point out small creatures to Discover Scuba Divers without getting too close. In spite of careful pre-dive preparation it flooded on the first dive - max depth 20ft. I took it apart, dried it out and got it working again. Chanced a second dive - flooded and now completely dead. The beam of light is only effective 3-4 feet away from the object.

what to look for in a laser

By

No high output lazer can use double or triple A batteries, they don't output enough power. Come on people. They say it can be seen 50 meters. A red laser? At 30 meters all of the red is gone. Go green if you need that range. Find one rated for 5mw, the legal limit.

Poor performance

Used laser for recent quarry dive with 15feet viz; laser dot could be only seen within a 3/4ft range. Beam not visible. 'On' switch did not consistently work; had to tap against hand to work. Would not recommend this product.

The Invisible Laser

By

If you are in a low light dive you may be lucky to see a tiny red dot at close range (0-3 feet). I can only assume the the designer/engineer of this product never tried it themselves. I am looking into a green laser. I hear that they are 10x more powerful and work well underwater. You can supposedly see the beam line in the water.

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
SHARON R  I use this to point out fish and plants, etc. without disturbing the flora and fauna underwater.
MARILYN D  Have you ever been diving and you see something great and your dive buddy doesn't see it? Well, with this laser pointer all I do is circle it and BAM he sees it every time. Love it. This is my second one, my first one was stolen after a dive by some unscrupulous dive master in St. Martin.
Shopper  Can you see the beam or just the dot on the object your pointing at?
Michael M  Just the dot you are pointing at. It works as advertised, but not quite as bright as I had hoped. Used it on the first couple of dives prior to going back to the finger pointing method.
Todd D  Not really able to see the beam at all (unless the water is really cloudy for the beam to bounce of off), and you can hardly notice the dot unless you know where to look. Very hard to use to point things out to other people.
NATALIE M  In extremely cloudy water with a lot of particulate, you can see the beam hitting some of the particulate but in clear water you will only see the dot.
JOHN J  It's just like in air. In a smoky room, or dusty in the air, you will see both the beam and the dot. Seeing the beam is called the "Tindle effect." In turbid water you will see the beam bounced off of the tiny partcles in the water--might sparkle. In the Sargasso Sea, visibility about 60 meters, you probably will not see the beam, and it's too deep to see any dot. In Antarctica, under sea ice in October, with visibility about 200 meters, you'll just see the dot. Elsewhere it's in between with regards to the beam.
ROBERT H  It depends on the amount of particulate in the water. In nice clear water, you only see the dot. It the water is cloudy (bad viz) you can see the beam.....you really don't want to see it.
TERRI S  Not really unless in very shallow water (less then 10 feet).
Bill N  What color is the beam? Is it green, red, or something else?
ARDI K  red
ROBERT H  Red and reasonably powerful. I use it when I lead dives to point out interesting creatures. We have sand dabs that are perfectly camouflaged to the sand bottom. Unless you see them settle, they are impossible to find. If you used any kind of pointer, they would take off and disappear. The laser is a perfect way to point them out to the divers.
KUNTAL J  The beam is RED. Good luck with using this under water Laser Pointer, I use it regularly on my dives.
TIMOTHY B  Red beam
Frank L  The laser is Red.
MARILYN D  The bean is red and it makes it very easy to "point out" what you are trying to get your dive buddy to see. The only problem I had with the laser was that an unscrupulous crew actually stole the pointer right off of my BC, go figure. It was a great pointer while I had it and I ordered another one.
