It’s the closest tropical island to the continental US, one you can get to in a few hours by ship or under an hour by air. In less time than it takes to drive from Miami to Disney World, you could be immersed in the warm, tropical waters surrounding Grand Bahama Island. You can even hop aboard a day cruise, making a one-day round trip to the island and back for under a hundred bucks. So, once you’ve made the quick jaunt to dive for a day in Freeport, where’s the best place to drop in?

The waters around Freeport offer diving opportunities for beginners and advanced alike. Sugar Wreck is a four-masted sailing vessel that sank during a hurricane in the 1880s. At a depth of about 20 feet, you get plenty of daylight with which to view the many fish and corals living there.

For more advanced divers, head to Littlehale’s Lair. There are two small coral caverns to swim through, and the area is home to grunts and snappers, making it a popular destination for underwater photographers. If you want to get a little deeper, try Great Lucaya (the Grand Bahama Wall). The top of the wall begins around 80 feet down, and features caves, caverns, and swim throughs.

There are loads of wreck diving opportunities even when you just want to dive for a day in Freeport. One popular intermediate to advanced dive, Theo’s Wreck, provides penetration opportunities for those who want to explore the interior of the ship. Sitting about 100 feet down, this scuttled freighter is on the edge of the continental shelf, where you can peer over the edge into the vast depths. Green moray and spotted eels are commonly sighted here.

Plan your next day trip to Grand Bahama — just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Florida coast, and dive for a day in Freeport!
