The textbook dictionary definition of a “lagoon” is “an area of shallow water separated from the sea by low sandy dunes.” By this definition, there are innumerable lagoons of every shape, size, and configuration scattered all across this planet. However, just like the seven wonders, these five lagoons have emerged as the clear frontrunners for natural beauty.

Aitutaki Lagoon – Cook Islands

The Aitutaki Lagoon has been written up in many books, including Steve Davey’s “Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die,” and is considered by many to be one of the best lagoons in the world. This lagoon has pure turquoise waters next to fine white sands, great scuba diving and snorkeling, a variety of lovely adjacent small islands and islets, and equally famous coral reefs.

Nanuya Levu – Fiji

Nanuya Levu, also known as Turtle Island, is also the site of the famous movie starring Brooke Shields called the “Blue Lagoon.” The island was opened for guests only after the film came out. Today it is a sustainable tourist attraction that gives back to the local culture through employment and education, and also gives great beauty and joy to visitors from all over the world. For this reason it is also considered to be one of the best lagoons in the world.

Parrot Tree Plantation – Honduras

Parrot Tree Plantation in Honduras is a tourist-friendly lagoon site complete with resort-style vacation options that caters to the needs of every visitor. The beach front has netting to protect swimmers from larger fish and the white sands are the perfect contrast to the beautiful teal-blue waters.

Carlsbad Lagoons – California

The Carlsbad Lagoons are actually a series of three lagoons that span over 1,000 acres of land. In addition to the natural beauty of the lagoons, visitors can enjoy scenic hikes, nature preserves, and other attractions.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – Iceland

Finally, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Iceland is thought by some to be one of the true wonders of the world. The lagoon waters are icy and picturesque, complete with floating icebergs!
