Shopper (1) What is gauge mode?
(2) Did I read another answer which said this does not come with a wrist strap? Photo shows a wrist strap, so now I'm confused.
(3) Does this have ability to plan dives in advance,as does the higher-level Vyper (the one for $424 without the transmitter)?
MARGARET T When the computer is in the gauge mode it records depth and time only. This feature can be used for mixed gas diving. The computer has a wrist strap, I replaced mine with bungees. THe viper also has a dive planning feature.

My Vyper:
1) Does *not* have a gauge mode
2) Does come with a wrist strap
3) Does have the ability to plan dives in advance via simple pushbutton scrolling thru various planned depths. The algorithm accounts for Nitrox or Air and gives you the no decompression time. You can also change the diver profile to account for multi-dive days and diver fitness level.

Marilyn S 1. Gauge gives you basic current dive info (current depth, dive time like using gauges) Gauge mode is basically just a bottom timer. This is useful if your a DIR/tech diver. 2. Comes with wrist strap. 3. It plans dives.
Shopper I hear the wrist strap is very long. Where would you advice to source a shorter one?
Also do you think this watch can be also used as a weekend watch or too large?
SCOTT M If you are not planning on using the dive comp with a dry suit, I would just cut the strap to the desired length.
As for using it as a watch, it is large, so probably not the best watch choice.

MYRA W I really like this wrist computer - however, as a female just over 5' tall, I find the wrist strap is quite long. I have seen it on people who simply just trim it down - which I intend to do. I have no idea where one might source a shorter wrist strap.
It is quite large - and unless you like to wear REALLY big watches, or are a larger person, then I don't think it would make a good weekend watch.
Hope this is helpful to your decision-making.
HOWARD M 2 answers... The computer, in my opinion, is WAY too big to be a daily watch. It's huge! Regarding the watch strap, you can buy from Deep Sea Supply a bungee strap for the computer itself (without the watch strap) which keeps it very streamlined against your wrist.
JOHN R It is too large for a watch. The strap is long but can be cut shorter. Very easy to read and manipulate even with gloves
GEORGE G It's a dive computer meant to fit over a wet suit some times 3mil sometimes 7mil I've"never" seen this as a problem.
Again it's a" dive computer" not a watch!
ALDO C The strap can always be cut to size, but you intend on using it over a wet suit it should be left alone.
Also this is way too large to be used as watch
CHRISTINE S It's definitely too large to wear as a weekend watch.
The strap is very long, but you can cut it for the length you want. I used to tug it into the closure part, but it would always come loose and dangle under water. I decided to shorten it. The strap has grooves for easy cutting.
Shopper Is this product air integrated?
SIMON C No, this particular computer is NOT air integrated, and as such, it is cheaper, more reliable and less likely to malfunction than an air integrated unit. A standard set of gauges works great for keeping track of your breathing gas. These are GREAT computers! They are VERY reliable and provide you with a nice, safe logrhythm. The Suunto Vyper Air/Nitrox is quite adjustable and to the best of my knowledge, like other Suunto dive computers, is the only option on the market currently that takes micro bubbles into account when calculating safety margins for multiple dives/your deco time etc. In my opinion a bit of added safety against the possibility of DCS.

Shopper The manual indicates that water activation occurs at 1.5 ft. Isn't this a little shallow? Anyone had troubles with it turning on as soon as you enter the water?
ROBERT S Mine never has. Mine normally activates just after I submerge. I Love this computer and am ready to buy another one for my wife.
ALAN B This isn't a problem, it is actually a nice feature of the dive computer. The computer "understands" the depth and will appropriately adjust the dive number so that you don't end up with multiple (erroneously counted) dives.
BRAD S Never had any issues on the surface. It seems more like 2-3 feet before the pressure activates it. This is a nice well balanced computer, I use it as my primary computer.
SCOTT M I mostly do boat dives with Nitrox, so I am used to turning it on before I get in the water to make sure that the settings are correct.
That being said, I've see both the Vyper and Cobra2 both turn on automagically when you hop in the water, and I have not had a problem with that.
Shopper Is this compatible with MAC computers?
MICHAEL C The website contains only a PC Compatible version of the software. I think it would be safe to say that "NO" they don't have a Mac Compatiple version.

SIMON C YES! The Suunto Vyper Air/Nitrox dive computer is compatible with Mac OS- but, the included software from Suunto only runs on Windows. MacDive, a great program, will allow you to download and log all your dive data from various Suunto computers- including graphical representations of your dive profile, temperature info etc. MacDive costs 25 USD and can be found and downloaded with a simple web search. There are Unix/Linux programs available as well.
Shopper Does this computer locks up when you exceed the no deco limits, or still works?
ALDO C It keeps on ticking but it warns you

ROEE K This computer supports decompression diving. It does not lock up. When you exceed the no deco limit, it goes into a mode where it displays your ceiling depth and minimum ascent time for a safe ascent profile.
It should go without saying however that if you intend to do decompression diving, you should obtain the necessary training AND be thoroughly familiar with the dive computer.
Shopper Does Vyper have a backlit or a phosphorescent screen?
ROEE K Not true. It is back-lit. You push a button for the backlight to turn on.
Anyhow, FWIW, I never find it necessary to use the backlight. With ambient light (day dive) the display is easily readable without the backlight. And at night I also just shine my dive light at the computer to read the display. There is no persistent phosphorescence like with some computers, but the display reads easily while a light is being shined on it.
For me, having the backlight is primarily just peace of mind -- knowing that even in the extremely unlikely event that both my dive lights fail simultaneously, and my buddy disappears, and I find myself suddenly all alone in the blackness, I can still turn on the backlight on the computer to read my depth and make a safe blue-water ascent.
ROBERT B I believe it is a phosphorescent screen. Because you do not have make any settings or push any buttons like on a GPS unit to see. When under water it is very bright and clear. I can't say one bad thing about this computer. The original battery lasted for 4 years for me and I just had it changed this year. A quick check on the Suunto web site would confirm. Hope this helps. RONI K Zoop is a subset of Vyper. The foolowing features are in Vyper but not in Zoop: Gauge mode, adjustable backlight duration, build-in dive simualtor, calendar clock.
JACOB M Disclaimer "I dont know and I dont like yellow" 3 Functions - Air, Nitrox, and Guage. The Vyper has a guage function which through the data from saved dives can be put into profile memory also both can be used as a depth gauge and timer with profile memory, making it ideal for professional and technical diving. Blah - I know you can read I dont own a Zoop. The Vyper has been cool since 2008, I have never changed the battery, and Im taking it to Mexico, Honduras, and Belize in 20 days. It got me through Instructor school and many dives, but if you are getting ready to spend some money why not at least get the Vyper or one that accepts the Suunto Wireless Tank Pressure Transmitter, The Vyper may be compatible however I did not buy the software to record the dives and all that. Like I said I am an Instructor I have 10 full sets of stuff. If it is for you get what you like (color, size, placement) or rent until you can afford the nice stuff. Dont buy for the features and then dont use them. Dont buy because you have a 3 day trip coming up because you have something you really didnt want on the forth day. If you do then you are wasting money. What I always love about diving is that an Instructor with $3,000 of equipment on and the new student with rental gear both jump off the same boat and see the same fish. After all that - its yellow and I dont know. P.S. call the people at SUUNTO. Be safe see you on the bottom.
Shopper Does this Vyper has audible alarms and if it does, are they loud enough to hear them with a 7mm hood?
ROBERT S The alarm is audible and seems to be loud. I only dive in warm water and have never worn a hood but I think you would be able to hear it.
RICK S The Viper Has a alarm it is audble even though a 5 mm Hood I see no reason it would not be audble with 7mm. Very good computer

ROBERT B I did purchase the Suunto Vyper wrist computer in 2007 and have since logged over 150 dives. I dive with divers all over the world and it seems that Suunto is on the wrists of most if not all of the dive masters and most of the divers. I don't know how I dove with out it. I would rate it 100% as most of the dive professionals that I dive with would also. As far as your 2 questions I bought the wrist computer so it comes with the wrist strap. The boot for the hose I am not sure of if it is interchangable. A quick email to Suunto would answer that. If you have the computer on your wrist, which I would recomend why would you want it on your octo? It is easier to see on your wrist. The computer is your life line you need to see it all the time. Your air pressure guage (PSI/BAR) you only check occasionally. The Vyper is awsome and I would not dive with out mine! Diving is a passion for me I love being under the water this computer helps me to stay safe and enjoy what I love to do. Hope I helped. Bob
ALEXEY K The wrist strap is a part of the device. What do mean by the hose mounting? Make it a part of the measurement instruments console?
Shopper I heard this unit doesn't calculate the necessary surface intervals between dives. Can this be correct?
WALTER C Hello. I'm not sure I understand the question. The Vyper displays your surface interval after each dive. The display is automatic while on the surface and the contacts are wet ("AC" shows on the display). Once the contacts dry, you can select the surface interval time when you turn the computer on. The Suunto algorithm calculates tissue saturation using the data from preceding dives and surface intervals. The surface interval since the previous dive also downloads with the dive log. The "plan" mode on the Vyper computes no decompression times for various depths using the data for (your) accumulated tissue saturation and surface intervals. I'm not sure what else you are looking for... I am a fan of Suunto and I have used the Vyper, Cobra and Gekko for almost 10 years.
TIFFANY S I haven;t had any issues. You just have to make sure you use the plan feature and know how to scroll through the dive numbers and it will calculate surface intervals and no fly times. You should download the manual and check it out.
Shopper Can it be used for freediving?
ROBERT S That I do not know. I tis the best dive computer I have ever owned though.
PEDRO LUIS T You can, but it's not worth it. They are better freediving computers than this one and way cheaper, I only use it for nitrox scuba diving.

DOUGLAS H If it is a Suunto Vyper, the computer is exactly the same as the one of the wrist band. If you remove the rubbery surrounding from the wrist mounted version, it would pop right into a Suunto console. I hope that helps.

LeisurePro S You can switch between nitrox and air between dives, but not during. However, if you use gauge (trimix) mode, you cannot change that setting until after 48 hours.
