Questions about this item:
Shopper I bought this strobe and base set up for my G12 and canon housing, The base to this strobe is NOT universal like the company says, I try pushing the buttons on the back of my case and the housing spins on the base. So my Question is, is there a base out there that can be switched out to fit this strobe and arm?
Thanks
JAMES S Although I am not familiar with the Canon UW camera housing, I did use the flash arm for an Intova and Sea Life Housing w/o a problem.
If the housing is attached, but spinning on the arm, it seems to me that you could correct the problem by inserting a combination of stainless flat washers and locking washers over the stud to take up the gap.
JEFF K I just changed the housing (from Canon's to RECSEA) for my G12. I had to swap the tray and arm to be compatable with the Sealife Pro Flash which I continue to use, and so the housing was more securely attached on the base. No matter the housing, the best system for your purpose is made by Ultralight Control Systems. You'll need a ball adaptor for the strobe, a tray, a handle, an arm and two clamps. I couldn't be happier with the result. Go to theier website, click on "What's New" and scroll down to photos and description of how to set up the Sealife pro flash with their system.
Cheers,
Jeff
STANLEY S when you use your case by itself.. you have to use the "weights for the case" I use one or two of those weights and that makes it tight.. I have also purchased the longer screw that is available and use TWO strobes one on each side... also needing one weight to make it tight. ANY spacer would work.
Shopper Does the case hold a camera as well or just the flash?
MATTHEW P Case will hold flash and a pint and shoot size camera pretty easly.
GEORGE B You can pack the camera in the case with the strobe, you will have to have them disconnected from each other to do so.
LAMAR B Holds both.
Nice case.
PATRICK O The flash folds over (the arm is flexible), so there is ample room for a compact camera with waterproof housing.
MORGAN O Depends on the size of your camera I keep my camera and housing in it as well as a save a dive kit.
Noel N I have the a Cannon G12 and the Cannon waterproof case Model # WP-DC34. Can you tell me if the SeaLife? Digital Pro Flash (SL961) would work with this set up?
Corban D How long does the bulb usually last, and are they replaceable? Where do you get an extra bulb? Thanks
WALTER C Hello I cannot specifically answer your question, but I have used the flash extensively for the last 2 years ... probably 200 dives -- and it is still going strong. Happy diving.
JACKIE S It appears the bulb is not replaceable. It is in a solid housing and it would only be accessable from the back, so you would have to take the whole thing apart. I am not sure how long the bulb lasts as mine has not burned out yet. As I remember Sealife does not sell replacement bulbs on their website which furthers my thoughts that it is not replaceable.
GEORGE B I have fired this flash over 300 times and have not had a problem with the bulb. I have the same flash on a different camera system and have taken well over 1000 shots with it, the bulb is still working well. I have not looked for an extra bulb and do not know where to find one, with the number of flashes on my strobes I have not even thought of an extra bulb.
KYRLE N I have had my flash for about 4 to 5 years and it still works fine. I have not had to replace the bulb yet. I cannot find my manual to look and see if the bulb is replaceable for you. You can contact Pioneer Research at 800-257-7742 to ask any unresolved questions you may have. I have personally contacted them for a problem I had with a discontinued camera and they went above and beyond and replaced the camera with the newest model they had at the time at no cost to me. I highly recommend this company and their products. I personally would not buy anything but Sealife. Their customer service is second to none.
CAROLE D Sorry but I still have original bulb and havde never thought about replacement.
ROBERT M 3 years now and not had to replace it yet ..
Cynthia L I bought a Olympus camera XZ-1 and housing PT-050. Just wonder if this strobe fits my housing and if the performance of this strobe works well on the brightness at 25m? I haven't decided to buy this strobe (as recommended) or should I buy the Olympus strobe UFL-1? I just worried about the illumination between the two. Pls give me some advice.
Thanks
Cynthia
DAN F I don't know about the housing. But the strobe works well at any depth provided you are close enough to the subject- no more than about 3 to 5 feet. I've had it down to 130 feet and it worked great. Hope this helps at least a little bit. Good luck, and cheers!
Cynthia L Thanks Dan. I trust a few comments also praise about this strobe. So, might consider to buy this.
JEROME P Hi Cynthia,
I'm really not qualified to give you a good answer to your question about whether this strobe will fit your housing or to compare it to the Olympus strobe UFL-1 because I have no experience with the Olympus housing and strobe. One thing I can tell you is that the SeaLife strobe does perform well and puts out a lot of light. I have been using it with two different SeaLife cameras, a DC 500 and a DC 1200 with good results. In reading the instructions the SeaLife manufacturers have made it so that their strobe seems to be compatible with many different camera systems, so chances are that it will be compatible with your Olympus, but again, I cannot say that from personal experience.
Another point I'd like to make is that the baseplate the strobe is mounted to should fit any housing that has a tripod mounting socket on its base, which is something that I would imagine most housings should have, and you could check that by looking at the bottom of your Olympus housing.
If you do decide to purchase a SeaLife SL961 strobe, I would make 2 recommendations to you. 1. Purchase a diffuser which is designed to fit this strobe. It spreads the light out more evenly, and gives you wider coverage which is particularly useful with wide angle lenses, plus it softens the light for closeup and macrophotography. It is also easily flipped up and out of the way for when you need more light, for greater distances. 2. I have found that the arm the strobe is mounted to was a bit too short to give the strobe enough separation from the camera. You can purchase another length of the same type of articulated arm from Loc Line (I believe it is 3/4 inch diameter) for a very modest price and simply snap it onto the arm the strobe comes with. This gives you a lot more control over placement of the light.
I hope this is helpful to you!
Good luck,
Jerry
Cynthia L Hi Jerome,
Thanks so much for your detailed and useful information and advice. I'll consider it.
Cheers
Cynthia
MATILDE O Hi Cynthia,
I personally would not recommend this product to you, it wasn't as high quality as I would have liked.I don't know how well the Olympus strobe works, but I would try that one.
Good luck and happy diving!
Cynthia L Thanks for your advice.
Shopper Does the SL961 come with a tray?
LeisurePro S Yes, base tray is included.
Shopper Is there a difference between a strobe and a flash?
LeisurePro S The terms strobe and flash are more or less interchangable.
Shopper I have a Sony Marine Pack Housing 40m with a screw hole on the bottom of the housing for tripod use. It appears to use a 5mm screw and allows 5.5 mm max insertion. Would this work for attaching the SLF961?
LeisurePro S Yes, it should fit.
Shopper We have the a Cannon Power Shot SD630 and the Cannon waterproof case Model # WP-DC3. Can you tell me if the SeaLife? Digital Pro Flash (SL961) would work with this set up?
Shopper My wife just bought an Olympus Stylus with UW housing. I don't think the housing has a dedicated place to plug in a fiber optic cable. (The Olympus UFL-1 flash is wireless.) Would this Sealife SL961 flash work with her camera? Is there a way to attach the flash link to the housing? Thanks for your help! - Rick
LeisurePro S Yes it will work and will come with atachments for your camera housing
Shopper Is this a new, non-refurbished strobe?
Shopper I have a Cannon S400 with an original Cannon shell. How does the fiber optic cable connect to the cannon? How does it synch?
LeisurePro S Fiber optic cable sticks to the outside of the housing.
Shopper I have a sony DSC W7 and an Ikelite case will this work with that set up and how do I synch the strobe to the camera?
LeisurePro S Yes using the fiber optic cable it comes with. It will attach to the outside of the housing.
Shopper I have a Olympus stylus 740 camera with a underwater case. Will this flash work with that camera.
LeisurePro S Yes it will, it's a great choice
Shopper would you even need a diffuser with this strobe, and would you need one or two for optimal result's ?
LeisurePro S You do not need a diffuser and depending on what you shooting one should be fine.
Shopper I read somewhere that the diffuser does not work with this flashead. Is this true?
LeisurePro S Correct, diffuser will not work.
Shopper I would like to add this to my "Elite" package that I have to utilize it with the 960D to use two strobes. Will this work OK? What else will I need to put the two strobes together? Do rechargable batteries and charger come with the 961?
LeisurePro S With this strobe you would replace one of your 960D's, arm, base and all and replace it with this. Then all you do is hook up its fiber optic cord and shoot. Just as the 960D, it does not come with batteries and a charger, but they are available as sku: SeaLife ReefMaster Rechargeable Ni-MH AA Battery and Charger Set. It does come with a soft case and fiber optic cable.
