DESCRIPTION

Whats in the box:Digital Online Classs, Wrist Computer, Transmitter, PC Interface Cable & Software

The Vyper Air dive computer, by Suunto, is the next generation of wireless air integration and computer technology. It allows you tomonitor your tank pressure and air consumption from your wrist or your console; you choose the location. Its 3-D compass will quickly become your new best friend; its ability to give a true reading, even at a 45-degree angle, will make keeping your heading easier than ever. If you use enriched air, you can program the Vyper Air 1% increments for nitrox mixtures (21-100% oxygen).

Many dive computers take readings every few seconds; to keep you as safe as possible, the Vyper Air uses the Suunto Deep Stop RGBM algorithm that offers continuous decompression reading and offers an optimal ascent time. The goal of Suunto is to keep you safe; with that in mind, they included the Deep Stop option as part of the Vyper Air. The Deep Stop option includes additional stops between the diver's maximum depth and ceiling to allow divers to gas off safely while making an ascent.

Excellent little computer! Very easy to use, especially with the new 4-button design. Menu is easy to understand and all the settings can be made quickly and easily. Compass with tilt function is great also.

Only minor downside is that you need to press and hold the SELECT button in DIVE mode to activate the compass, instead of just a short press. If you make a short press (can happen when you're wearing gloves) the computer will bookmark that point in your dive instead of bringing up the compass. I would have preferred if this was reversed (i.e. the long press for the bookmark and the short press for the compass). Same applies for the back light. It would be more useful if the backlight could be activated with just a short press rather than a long press of the MODE button.

Other than that, the quality is great, it's very easy to read and easy to understand. Just what you expect from a dive computer.

Good computer, improvement on the Vyper 2. However, the compass calibration was frustrating as it kept failing. You also have to calibrate tilt on this unit (unlike the Vyper 2) and it took several tries as well.[...]

Comments about Aqualung Suunto Vyper Air Wrist Computer (Complete System):

This is a great computer in that it is, for the most part VERY reliable but as with anything that incorporates a battery, it can fail. I have added a backup pressure gauge to my first stage for this reason. Thus for the sake of additional safety as well as NOT loosing the dive, I failed to eliminate a hose with the purchase of the Viper Air, but I did improve availble dive data with the addition of the Viper Air and I created good equipment redundancey.

I like the RGBM algorithm because it is more conservative. My dive buddies typically have shorter surface times because their DC does not incorporate this important Reduced Gas Bubble Model.

As referenced above, the tank pressure display function has failed on me from time to time but I believe the unit did all it could to remain electronically paired to my transmitter and failed when I got seperated from my tank during ground transport or while switching tanks without disarming the Air Dive Mode. Sometimes it re-pairs by itself and other times I have to use the published procedure to clear and re-pair the unit manually. The procedure works every single time but it's an abnormal operation as such, it will take you a time or two before you have the procedure memorized and don't have to refer to the operating manual.

Bottom line -- this unit has it's own way of electronically seeing things and the owner has to read the manual several times and get hands-on use to get comfortable with it. I think that's the same with just about any DC. As with all equipment I dive with that incorporates a battery, I use it for it's utility but NEVER rely on it as my sole source to safely continue the dive. Hope you find my comments helpful. Chris

Comments about Aqualung Suunto Vyper Air Wrist Computer (Complete System):

When functioning properly a great tool to use, unfortunately i bought 6 complete units for me and my family and all have failed, and have either been replaced or repaired by the company purchased from. I now carry a spare hose and gauge, in case one of our units let us down again. The compass does not stay on long enough, which we use on big drift dives, my preference next time would be the D9 or better.

Great and easy to use. The only reason this did not get 5 stars is the battery in the transmitter failed after 3 dives. No problems with the computer, really like it. [...], was disappionted to have a battery problem so soon though.
