DESCRIPTION
Writing in a log book is time consuming and if you don't have good handwriting illegible. Log books are small and difficult to fill in the blanks. The Suunto PC Interface is for uploading logbook dives to a PC in order to optionally store and organize the data, computer statistics, simulate dives and personalize the logbook file. Rather than filling out the logbook, just print out your log sheets to prove your diving experience

FEATURES
  • Precise Information
  • Print Out Legible Dive Sheets
  • PC Based Program
  • Stores and Organizes Dive Data

If you like the idea of having a copy of your dive log on your PC to review & annotate, the Suunto Dive Manager & PC connection are great products. All in all, they worked as advertised & are great additions to your dive gear.

I did have a little trouble initially getting connected to my Suunto Cobra dive computer , but that was my fault because I didn't realize that the Cobra needed to be in "data" mode before it would react to the PC connection. I guess I was expecting a USB "plug and play" connection.

Anyway, once I had the Cobra in the right mode, the PC connection immediately recognized it & stepped me through the process of transferring the dive log to the PC. The connection wasn't particularly speedy, but unless you do hundreds of dives, you won't be doing it all that often anway.

After I had the log transferred, the Suunto Dive Manager UI was very friendly & efficient. I spent a few hours reviewing my dives, adding gear items, & annotating each dive with my own information. It can actually become somewhat addicting if you're a detail-oriented person like I am.

All in all, the Suunto Dive Manager & PC Connection worked as advertised & can be great additions to your dive gear if you're the type of person who likes having a copy of your dive log on your PC (mine is a Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP SP2).

I have a Cobra and a Mosquito (back-up); the connector fit to both is insecure and required a two hand hold to work until I rigged a base with some urethane rubber and a pair of rubber bands, something you shouldn't need to go around inventing.

The software is buggy and at best gives a hit and miss connection. In almost 60% of instances, it fails to recognize the dive-computer at first try; then, it appears to compete for the same USB port with my Palm organizer "Hotsync". Sometimes it forces me to reboot the host computer to get a viable connection. If you add USB peripherals that might sequester the defined port, you'll have to undergo an involved and undocummented procedure. The software documentation is next to nil.

On the other hand, the logbook is fairly decent with customizable fields, and it admits a number of different users with separate logbooks.

To finish, this should be a freebie included with the computers, it's too ill designed to be sold as an extra.

Comments about Seaquest Suunto PC Download Kit (USB) for Cobra, Mosquito, Vyper, Vytec & Zoop computers:

Product works as described. The only thing I did not like was that if the Zoop was out of the console, the plug kept falling off. However, if the Zoop is in the console, the plug is held tight.

The v3.0 disk that came with it did not include support for the ZOOP. I downloaded the latest version of Dive Manager which is V4 but really did not like the new format of the program. I found a version 3.1 of dive manager on the Suunto site. This works with the Zoop and has all the features I wanted.

If you have the Cobra, you need this. But it is overpriced, doesn't always 'see' the Cobra right away. The software looks and acts old. Nice to have it to log dives, but in this era of inexpensive and highly functional software it is a ripoff.
