DESCRIPTION
Many divers won't even dive with a snorkel, just look around on the next dive you take at the beach or out on the charter boat, very few snorkels. You also hear many divers on those dives complain about their short bottom times and want to know how to increase it for more fun. A snorkel is part of that answer. The amount of air a diver wastes on the surface breathing from their regulator drastically reduces the amount of air for the actual time they are underwater. A snorkel that is easy to clear is low in profile and one that stays dryer inside is what you are looking for. SV stand for Scupper Valve, also known as a one-way-valve. Just like the one-way-valve in your regulator which when you exhale drains water from your regulator the scupper valve basically works the same. The SV2 uses an additional feature that keeps water away from your mouth a small tube located just below the mouthpiece is designed to keep the breathing airway path free of water droplets. To keep water from easily entering the top of the snorkel the SV2 incorporates a grill grid opening which deflects water that would go down the end of a conventional snorkel tube. So if you hate to use a snorkel, but want more bottom time this is the solution you are looking for

Comments about Atomic SV2 Semi-Dry Snorkel:

The scupper valve works great. If it is completely filled with water a moderate blow will expel water from the top and bottom of the snorkel. With more water inside the tube, it clears easier because of the siphoning action. When a small amount of water enters, it may require 3 blows to get out. The wave guard works good too. In moderately choppy waters, none entered the vent.
The ventilation was good too as the bore is wide enough to allow heavy breathing.

The snorkel keeper rotates and move up and down. It fits a bit slack on my 'Cressi big eyes evolution crystal' mask, because the straps are not wide enough.
The snorkel is also heavy compared to my cressi corsica. I primarily Snorkel/Freedive in 80/20 % of the time in tropical waters. This snorkel has a flexible tube with no J type support. My mouth was getting tired and my teeth hurt from biting hard to keep the snorkel in my mouth, as I had to support the weight of the bottom part of the mouthpiece. I could snorkel for over 3 hrs. straight with the cressi corsica with no mouth fatigue.

Not a bad snorkel, but for the price, it is the most expensive piece of plastic that I own. This snorkel was designed for scuba divers who need to save oxygen while getting out or back to the boat. The flexible mouthpiece tube was also made to swing away from the mouth and thus accomodate the regulator. It was not designed for snorkelers who require a snorkel with a J support for prolonged use. I would order the Cressi corsica or the Riffe J snorkel next time.

Comments about Atomic SV2 Semi-Dry Snorkel:

Like all Atomic products, the SV2 moves the bar on a variety of points--some of them just tiny technical tweaks--but all add up to a professional grade item that simply outperforms. I've used this snorkel recreationally in a variety of conditions and have always been pleased--it simply works and let's me get back to having fun. I've also put it to work in some pretty big seas and rough chop--the scupper minimizes intake of water and the purge valve is a very effective--no effort at all. I've never been a big fan of "dry" snorkels because I hate that "lock out" feeling when you go for air at the surface--the SV2 fits my preferences and demands perfectly.

Comments about Atomic SV2 Semi-Dry Snorkel:

I also found the scupper not so effective. It clears, but sometimes requires 2-3 blows. I started putting a hand over the intake. Also not so sure how the slide adjustment on the side is suppossed to work! Always slipped to full out position.

Comfortable and effective, but not to justify the price.

Comments about Atomic SV2 Semi-Dry Snorkel:

Not overly impressed with the scupper valve, seemed just as prone to getting water as other snorkels I have used. I do like the quick release and that it will slide up and down easily, the mouthpiece rotates easily. Bit pricey given all of the above.
