Great lil mold!!

By Martin C

from Wilmington,NC

This is a great mold.Have made over 100#'s of weights from 2-5 pounders no problems at all. Before using i rubbed a little bit of plumbers silicone grease (found at home depot)inside and had no trouble getting the blocks out.I did heat the mold while melting the lead for the first pour. After that just left in the mold until i was ready to pour the next block.Just a couple taps on a concrete block and the fall right out.

Pros

  • Easy to use

Cons

  • none

Best Uses

  • Various size weights

Created weights with ease a few taps on the block with a mallet after a little cooling they fell clear. Full mold throws 5 to 5.25 lb (2.3 to 2.4 kg)weights. Half full throws 2.4 lb (1.1 kg)weights.
Used heavy base stainless steel pot(cheap). Coleman single burner petrol stove and a spoon to skim scum off melt. I was able to make 7 weights in a single run. Weights have good size belt loops and a nice flat for a screw in the middle to fix on belt (no slippage). Safety - use goggles and gloves in a ventilated area for fumes, monoxide and lead. Keep liquids away from molten Lead, it will react violently if it gets into melt keep out of rain when working. Don't like new gimmick shot belts they get verdigris that washes off in swimming pools causing contamination. Pool owners will ban dive classes due to contamination. Add suspenders for a pleasant Dive. Stops belt from sagging as suit and body compress at depth. Get the feel of hard hat diving.

Pros

  • Easy casting

Cons

  • none

Best Uses

  • Weight belt weights

Easy casting a few mallet taps on the block after a little cooling & the weight falls clear. Trim any sprues while warm. Nice shape good size belt holes with a flat centre for popping in a screw to lock in place on belt.Full block weight 5 to 5.25 lb (2.3 to 2.4 kg)also cast some half block 2.4 lb (1.1 kg).Used Coleman petrol cooker single burner & Stainless steel pot, spoon off scum before casting. I was able to cast 7 blocks continuously. Rember ventilated area lead & monoxide fumes. Safety goggles & gloves a must. ABSOLUTELY no liquids in immediate area while working with hot lead it will blow violently if it gets wet keep out of rain also. Not into the new gimic shot weights they get a verdigri and drop it. Pool owners won't allow newbies in their facilities with shot belts.Coupled with suspenders pleasant diving no weight slip when body & suit compress.

Been using this mold to create weights for years! With a good source of scrap lead, you can use this with a small LP stove to make weights right away.

Our club has owned one for years and everybody uses it as needs arise. Measuring the different weight sizes is easy with the aid of a kitchen balance. If you have a good source to cheap scrap lead (I have a tire shop next door to my biz.) it pays itself over and over. I just wish it came with marks for the different weight sizes.
