Lionfish have become a plague to the Southeast US and the Caribbean. Our reefs are under attack and need help. The removal of Lionfish from these waters is part of the answer. Lionfish have piousness spins, but that poison does not affect the fishes flesh. Matter of fact Lionfish is a great fish to eat! Light, flaky and very delicious. There are all kinds of recipes to cook them from fluffy battered, Bahamian fried, to South Pacific Grilled, heck you can also make Sushi, Taco's, jerky, and Lionfish Ceviche!

Having the proper spear will allow you to bag this delicacy and save the reefs at the same time. Lionfish Mini Spear with Tip is the perfect size to carry on any dive you may encounter Lionfish. Small enough to not get in the way, yet always ready when you need it this 21" (53.3cm) long by 1/2" (1.3cm) diameter lightweight corrosion proof fiberglass shaft with a 6mm male thread and a removable 6" (15.2cm) stainless steel 6-Prong Tip is easy to fire just like a spear pole. The short length of the shaft made it difficult to use without getting within inches of the lionfish; that was not always an option. The length of the shaft also makes it more susceptible to friction during the release. We bought a longer spear after using this only one day. I will be replacing the shaft with my own, longer 1/2" fiberglass rod; an extra 12" would make a world of difference.

Comments about Aqua Lionfish Mini Spear with Tip:

With a little practice on some unsuspecting coconuts, you can attain almost 100% accuracy with this spear. I've killed several hundred of them with mine, and lionfish are all I hunt.

As mentioned by other reviewers, you have to get really close to the lionfish to kill them. But if you move slowly toward a lionfish, you can get within inches without them moving away. It is super easy to kill the buggers, but it does take practice and patience.

I recommend only shooting at them when there's a sandy area or a barren rocky area behind or below the fish (NOT a live coral area) for the spear to go into after it passes through the fish. They don't die easily and if you spear them with the tip in open space, they can swim off the spear and live to wreak havoc on the environment another day.

If you have the opportunity to spear them from above, aim for a spot just behind their head aimed slightly toward the head, you will penetrate behind the skull and pierce the brain, usually killing them instantly. If you try to spear them directly in the head, they will usually bounce right off...their skulls are pretty dense and this spear isn't long enough to generate enough force to penetrate it.

Lionfish are tough...they can survive a few puncture wounds without a problem. I have seen several lionfish with 3 or 6 holes already in them. So aim carefully, go slowly, don't shoot if they have an escape route or if you could potentially harm other sealife or the environment and kill as many of the nasty buggers as you can!

As someone else said, I wish it had come with a tethered hard tip cover, but I keep a cork on mine and it works okay.

It's hard to travel with a larger speargun and they can get quite expensive. This one is good for travel and won't break the bank.

Comments about Aqua Lionfish Mini Spear with Tip:

I carry this spear while hunting for lobster in Florida. I use velcro ties to attach the spear to my lobster noose. It is handy and easy to release when I come upon a Loin Fish.

Comments about Aqua Lionfish Mini Spear with Tip:

I think this is an EXCELLENT value. I made a scabbard out of PVC tube that is zip-tied to my BC. I keep the tip protected in a BC pocket. When I see a lionfish, I pull out the shaft, screw on the tip and blam!: lionfish for lunch/dinner! I've killed more than I can count with this while on recreational dives.

Comments about Aqua Lionfish Mini Spear with Tip:

I used this on some Lionfish this weekend but to be reliable I had to get exceptionally close. In addition, the concave, funnel opening to the container I use to keep the fish and take them off the spear (a great tool) was too narrow to tolerate the 6 tips and the barbs made it very difficult to get the spear back out again. I'm just ordering a longer pole and simpler tip right now.
