DESCRIPTION

In the early days of cave diving, reels were not available to buy off the shelf. Divers used anything they could, including empty electrical wire spools. When exploring, divers would pay out the line and if they didn't empty the spool it would be left in the cave for the next dive.

This large diver's reel comes with 250 ft. nylon 2mm line, has a corrosion resistant aluminum anodized frame, spring loaded slide gate clip, and drag system. The reel position the handle on top, which helps divers who use a handheld light to hold both the light and the reel in one hand, freeing the other hand to work the reel. Reel has large tension adjustment control knob which is easy to use with gloved hands, and helps prevent bird nesting and back lash of the line. Reel is ideal for lift bag deployment.

    I tested this product while wreck diving. First of all: The reel is too small to be useful: The pin you use to spin the reel is too close to the "tension adjustment knob" and too short to be effectively used with diving gloves. The tension adjuster knob is a toy you will never use and doesn't really do it's job anyway. The little locking mechanism is nice for storage, but in the way underwater: It's exactly where you would put the finger to add tension on the spool. In addition: This spool is only suitable for right handed divers. In a confined environment where you have to switch the reel from hand to hand once in a while, this one is unnecessarily difficult to use.

        handle has no bearing or bushing making this a bear to reel line in. the space between frame and spool makes this reel jam easily. the plastic screw lock can easily break and let go of spools raised spokes allowing free spool. dissimilar metals in construction send aluminum body to oxidise rapidly even after soaking in fresh water and taking good care of reel. i would not recommend this product to anyone for anything or use.

        Durable construction, but has too many spots for the line to tangle on. Line tends to slip between the spool and other parts (handle, knobs). Requires some fine motor skills to operate. A bit bulky.
