Shopper if you take off the line does it have longer range?
RONALD B yes,if you take off the line attaching the spear to the gun it would have longer range. I wouldn't however suggest that....you will more than likely lose your spear !
I replaced the stock spear retention line with a shock cord. they come in different lengths, i use a 12 ft shock cord.
I have killed and ate alot of fish with this gun, I highly recomend it.

DALLAS T I doubt there is a useful range beyond the length of the line, not to mention even if you could shoot a fish from that far away it won't be long before a fish swims away with your spear and they aren't that cheap to replace.
MARTIN D Yes you will have a longer range. With added pumped up pressure even more range but the trigger is harder to pull lessoning your chance for an accurate shot at a moving target. The closer the better.
MARTIN D Yes the range is longer. The pressure the gun is pumped to can give considerabley more distance but I find the trigger harder to pull and lessoning the chance for hitting a moving target.
SCOTT J Of course it has a longer range without a tether, however, you will probably lose your spear. This is a very powerful gun. I have harvested hundreds of fish with this, and most of the shots blew through both gill plates
DROP SHIP P It has a very long range. But if you need to take the line off, you should look into using line reels. because you will not be able to recover the spear.
