Pat B Are the Oceanic VT3 and the Aeris T3 (and I think there is even a Hollis model) the same computers?? Do they use the same algorithms to calculate bottom times? I own the Aeris 500AI and want to stay with a computer that has similar bottom times.
JACOB W Yes, the Oceanic VT3 and the Aeris T3 are the same computers with different aesthetics; they use the same algorithms. As for the Hollis model, I cannot say.

That being said I have the Oceanic and decided on it due to it's vast array of features, ability to run multiple tanks, and size. No regrets great model and super pricing through leisure pro. ALLYSON S Yes, the Oceanic Vt3 and the Aeris T3 from what I can tell are essentially the same computer or at least the same algorithm set. I dive daily and those who dive with me that have the Aeris T3 have the same dive profile at the end of the dive that I have. I dive deep and we come close to Deco most dives and I when I check those with the Aeris, we have the same time remaining. I can also link up with Aeris users to monitor their air consumption as well. I have been very satisfied with my VT3, especially the algorithm profile. It is not as conservative as other brands, while still safe.

Did you notice if one of these was easier to read? ( I am now to that point that I am looking for those stick on magnifiers to put in my mask. I would like to avoid that if either the Oceanic or Aeris has big enough numbers to read with out +1.5 magnification.) Specifically, when in deco, is one easier to read than the other? On my Aeris 500AI when I enter deco the symbols and numbers are pretty small. I dive a lot of deco with a slung deco tank.

Shopper How far does this computer pick up your buddy transmitter?
JAMES J If you're asking so that you can check your buddy's tank pressure, I did try this once. You'd have to be buddy breathing or otherwise very close. It was more hassle than it's worth.
If you asking if the device would pick up the wrong tank, then no worries: each transmitter has a unique serial # and you must program them in and select the tank you want.
DAVE V I have not used the buddy feature. I did pick up a second VT3 but my son and I have not had occasion to use them together yet. I have had my first VT3 for about 5 years and have found it to be an excellent computer. I liked it enough to purchase a second unit.

EDWARD K It works within approx 6 to 8 ft after that transmitter may loose signal momentarily until back in range. I love my vt3 about 140 dives not even one problem.
TERRY M Not totally sure actually. I have used that feature once or twice and we were within 40 feet. I believe. But I really don't use that anymore. I use the system which is awesome just not the buddy Air.

yes, the VT3 tells you water temp. It takes time to settle to actual, but it works very well. I don't use the VT3 to tell me surface temp, but of course it supports that.

MURRAY A It definitely measures the water temperature. Unfortunately, I have never paid attention as to whether or not it shows the air temperature during the surface intervals.

RANDY M I have no experience with the Sunnto unit. I have logged 5 dives with the Oceanic VT3 and it does everything very well. I found the manual focused more towards technical diving, such as deco dives, which I do not do. The multi gas mix feature will help on the occaisions I do deeper dives and change mixes from dive to dive. My normal dive profile is very conservative (35 min dives in 35-60') and RGB Algorithm used by the VT3 seems to work excell in that profile. The transmitter is great. Has not lost signal yet. I am buying the retractor kit for it. The wrist location does not suit me like I thought it would. It comes with an excellent case and the plastic face protectors are readily availble at most dive shops. I would not buy a computer that does not allow for user battery replacement. Replacement on this one is simple, battery is a normal type available everywhere and I keep a spare vacum wrapped in my dive bag. Hope this helps and is not too late a response.
TERRY F I bought the VT3 and love it. If you take the online course offered through LP it makes everything a lot easier. I can program my dive plan when setting up on the boat and just switch from plan to plan while other people are messing around with theirs during surface time. I dont know enough about the Suunto to say which is better bettween the 2 but I would actually compare it to an UWATEC to be honest. The best user friendly air intergrated I have used. Buy it you will see!
RICKY R I found that the oceanic computers are a little more aggressive than all suunto computers giving u more time before deco. If your buddies dive with suunto, keep it simliar because u will always dive to the least aggressive computer
GORDON S This was/is my second VT3 computer. The first one I purchased for my wife, and the following year I purchased the second one. I did not compare the VT3 to Suunto, because I wanted the VT3 for 3 reasons:
1. It allowed for both me and my wife to monitor each other's air supply, and
2. It had a really good reputation in the industry when I purchased the first VT3 from my dive shop.
3. The VT3 has easy to read numbers, even under water, and, I can even hear the warning beeps under water
We replace the batteries (watch & transmitter) annually when we have our regulators serviced by our dive shop. This comes from experience when we failed to have the battery replaced in one of our dive computers and we were not able to get any replacement batteries anywhere on the island where we were diving.
The only thing you have to monitor is when a dive buddy or ship hand grabs your vest with tank & regulator attached, that they do NOT use the transmitter as a convenient handle.........which I've seen people do to others'.

EDWARD K I don't believe It will work without the transmitter that is attached to the first stage to send info to the info to the computer ,however the other features should work if the computer is placed in free dive mode. TRANSPORT D Brian, it is "user replaceable", but in all honesty, I had a very difficult time. If you don't use silicone, it is impossible. Be sure to read the instructions carefully!

Tom D I am considering buying this computer even though it is not the newest generation. A few questions. Does the computer tell you how much air is in the tank while you are still on the boat? I have heard this can be a problem with some hoseless computers. How often does the computer and transmitter lose a signal? How often do you have to change the computer and transmitter batteries. Any other problems?

DANIEL W As long as your regulator is on the tank and open and you are close by, it will show the psi. If you walk away for a while, you will just have to press one button on the face when you go near your transmitter to reaquire the psi reading.
I haven't had any problems with the transmitter losing the computer while diving.
Battery life depends on how much you use it. For an average diver it should last a season at least.
No complaints with this computer.
FRANK W Yes it tells you tank pressure when you are on the boat. The computer and tank unit rarely loose signal. My wife has had one for 2 years and never lost signal. My wife's 2 year old one still has the original batteries and we dive about 60 dives a year.
SCOTT S I have about 20 dives logged with my VT3 and it has performed flawlessly. I have never had an issue with it not showing how much air I have both on the boat or during a dive. I have never lost the signal during a dive either but, as I said, I've only logged about 20 dives with it. I haven't changed the batteries yet. I keep spare transmitter and receiver batteries in my dive bag, as they are user replaceable.
Overall, the computer has been fantastic and Oceanic's customer service is outstanding.. I have 2 other Oceanics, an Atom 2.0 and a Veo 100 nx, and they have proven to be flawless over the past several years.
I would definitely recommend you buy the VT3.
LAURA H I have not had any issues and love this unit. Had it a couple of years and have to change the battery. Yes it does give you how much air is in the tank as soon as you turn the unit on.
GREGORY K Yes, it does tell you how much air is in the tank when you are on the boat, as long as you have the transmitter enabled. The one gotcha on that is, if you don't enable the transmitter before you get in the water, you can't enable it after you are already in the water. I have not had the transmitter lose signal at all while in use, maybe if the batteries started getting low or something I could see this happening more. The manual has information on where to best mount the transmitter to get the best signal if you have multiple ports to choose from on your regulator. I have had mine for two years and haven't changed the batteries yet. They do however recommend that you change them every year. I just carry spare batteries in my dive bag for when they do get low. I am happy with it, no problems beyond forgetting to turn my transmitter on once.
DEREK E Hey Tom,
I've used the VT3 since 2007 and have 500 dives on one of these. I have no complaints and the VT3 has always been easy to use. The computer does not measure presure outside of water, at least mine does not. However, you would always want a basic hose SPG anyway on you. I never have transmitter loss issues underwater. Only one time when I let the batteries get low did I see a signal issue. I dive over a 100 times a year, so I just make it a habit to change the batteries once a year. I have seen ocasional partial pressure errors with nitrox, but my firmware is down rev, so it could have been resolved. The price is so good on the VT3 now I've considered buying another one!

John H Can the vt3 calculate how much air is being used into mins on the size of 80 tank?
CHRIS L Yes. During a dive the VT3 will calculate "air time remaining" in minutes based on your recent (average over the previous 90 seconds) breathing rate. This calculation tracks the drop in tank pressure so it doesn't matter what size tank you are using. By default, this calculation includes time to ascend from depth, a 3 minute safety stop, and surfacing with 500 psi.
After a dive, the OceanLog PC software can be used to download and save dive info from the VT3. OceanLog has a calculation for SAC rate for the overall dive. That calculation is dependent on tank size. Knowing your typical SAC rate range can be useful in planning dives.

Sharon H Is there a way to ensure the computer stays in dive mode only? It entered into free dive mode as i was descending on a recent dive trip.
BRADLEY M I have about 100 dives on my VT3 and have never experienced that probelm. If it happend only once then may be the result of you accidently hitting a button, but if it has happend numerous times may be a malfunction. The only "problem" I have notied is that it will shutoff after I set up my gear if we have a long boat ride to the dive site. Try calling Oceanic directly, they were always helpful when I have called in the past. Diver4121.
KEVIN C Sounds like user error. Mine always stays in whichever mode I leave it in (dive, gauge, or free dive ). It could be possible you never set it in dive mode properly, so it defaulted back to it's previous setting. Has this happened more then once?

SCOTT S I have only dove with the VT3 about a dozen times and haven't experienced it switching from dive mode into another mode.
I don't think, as far as I know, there's a way to switch it out of dive or free dive mode during a dive.
I would, if I were you, contact Oceanic customer service and explain what happened. They are awesome, by the way. I wouldn't be surprised if they swapped it out for a brand new one.
Otherwise, my VT3 has been flawless and I've been very pleased with it.

SCOTT S Absolutely. Leisure Pro is an authorized Oceanic dealer. Leisure Pro is another awesome company. I buy most of my stuff from them.
Leisure Pro's policy is such that they will take returns up to a certain amount of time (30 or 60 days I think).
I suggest you call Oceanic and let them send you a new unit. They are fantastic.
DAVID B THe computer should never enter free dive mode once it is set to air or nitrox,if it can change to freedive mode on its own it is virtually worthless as a dive computer.
JAMES J I've never had this happen. Could a button have been pressed accidentally before or during entry? I know you can't change it once in the water -- I left mine on gage only once, and didn't realize it until underwater. Sorry, all I can offer.
Sharon H It definitely could have happened but not intentionally. I am new to this computer and still learning it. It worked great majority of the dive trip until the last day; I hope I pushed a button and that is all! My old computer went into dive mode as soon as wet (I did turn that feature on).
