Questions about this item:
Shopper Why Did You Choose This?
GERALD O After a great deal of research I purched this regulator and I love it.
THOMAS S Mares reputation, sturdy construction, nice look, ease of breathing even below 100 ft.
TOM S Researched the reg liked what i read and again Leisure Prohad the best price.
Love this reg it is easy breathing in all positions. Very comfortable mouth piece.
Almost forget its there
PHILIP N My first regulator. I did a whole lot of research before I bought this and I made an excellent choice. Mares was Dacor and they know a thiing or two about regulators. Comfortable, reliable and durable. This will likely be the last regulator I will ever have to buy.
JEFFREY C What is the difference between the Mares Abyss 22 and the Mares Abyss 52?
LENI C Hi Jeffrey,
I do not know. I bought the 22 and it worked fine for me diving to 110 ft. Does the product information tell you the difference? More bells and whistles? Sorry I am not helpful.
SUSAN L G Basically the same regulator but with four LP 3/8" ports as opposed to three 3/8" and one 1/2" LP ports in the 22.
It is not clear if the NNC feature is in the first or second stage: anyhow, it is only important for cold water diving.
Based on above the 22 continues to be their highest performance regulator.
Advantage of the 52--when replacing the LP hose for the regulator, no need to hunt for the high performance diameter hose.
Advantage of the 22--high perfomance hose allows for higher air flow and less initial draw effort for breathing.
I love the performance of both, great breathing in any position, upside down, inverted, easy breathers......
TAGGART L After looking at the manufacturers website, it looks like some new internal components make it (the 52) a bit lighter. Although I have to admit the abyss 22 is heavy, after changing out the mouth piece its quite comfortable and breathes very naturally. Anything Mares puts out is fantastic, so rest assured you are getting a great reg.
I hope this helps.
MATTHEW F Dunno but I have two 22's set up on doubles and have never had a problem with them and can't think of anything they could do better.
ali s What are the radius of low pressure ports and what importance do they have if it is 3/8" or 1/2" or 2" ? on mares website it is written that mr22 has 3 3/8" and 1 2" LP ports. What are their usage?
AUSTIN H This reg has a total of 4 LP (Low Pressure) ports. One for your primary, and 3 extras. One of the extras goes to your BC inflator line. The other to an Octopus, and then you really only have one left over for an accessory. The additional 2 HP (High Pressure) ports are to run an air integrated computer like the Cobra (what I have) and/or a pressure guage. The ports arent the same size to discourage accidental over pressurization from hooking up a LP designed accessory to an HP port. This is also a great reg. A bit heavy, but awesome. You can take some lead off your weight belt.
SABRE U Connected to my 1st stage I have a regulator hose, guages, secondary air source, and a hose to my drysuit. Some hoses are different sizes. This means there may be a different pressure requirement for your eqipment. Make sure you consult a proffessional when setting up your gear.
Bill P this is from Jeno
Most LP hoses have 3/8? fittings. Mares- in order to allow more air at deep diving- uses 1/2? fitting for their main secondary regulator. Next to the 1/2? port is a 3/8? port for the octopus, and there are two more 3/8? ports on the other side of the first stage for inflator and other accessories.
ali s so you mean that 1/2" LP port is for main second stage for deeper diving that air can flow easily when its density gets higher, and the others are for octopus, bc inflator, etc. ?
thanks...
GREGORY H Mares makes their primary second stage regulator hose fittings in a different size, so there's one fitting for that and the others are industry standard for things like an octo, your power inflator, an air nozzle hose for blowing off your camera, etc.
NICK M If memory serves, the LP ports are routed to the computer or gauges on one side and the BCD inflator on the other. That leaves the HP outlets for the regulator and octopus (secondary or backup regulator). I know some technical divers would also use LP ports for inflating lift bags when bringing up salvage items, byt that's not a use with which I am personally familiar.
Shopper How much do 1st and the 2nd stages weigh?
LeisurePro S The first stage has a weight of 812 grams and the second stage weighs 271 grams.
Shopper What kind of depths is this regulator good to?
LeisurePro S This is cleared to perform down to 160 feet and is balanced, so the inhilation effort should remain constant.
Shopper Is this reg suitable for cold water (4 deg C)?
LeisurePro S Yes, this is a good reg for colder water diving. For ice diving, consider the Abyss 22 Extreme, a reg that has extra layers of protection for extreme temperatures.
Shopper Can I use the Abyss 22 with Nitrox?
LeisurePro S Yes, to 40%.
Shopper Is this regulator Nitrox compatible.
Ken T does it need to be serviced before switching between air and nitrox?
LeisurePro S Yes up to 40%
Shopper Just wondering what type of fitting the first stage is?? Yoke or Din, i'm from Aust. and i think we use DIN?? any advice??

Whats in the box:1st Stage, 2nd Stage and LP Hose The Abyss (MR22) diaphragm first stage features the DFC system and a replaceable HP seat connector. The exclusive MARES DFC system featured minimizes the intermediate pressure drop which occurs in all regulators during the inhalation phase. This pressure drop is greater when higher airflow is demanded of the regulator. The DFC system substantially reduces breathing effort and inhalation resistance, especially during deep dives and under high air flow conditions. The high pressure poppet was designed for a "2 year or 200 dives" service interval; double the high pressure seat life standard! Compact body, in a modern and smart style, it is made of hot-forged nickel-plating and chromed brass. It is fitted with a preferential intermediate pressure port for connection to the primary second stage, plus 3 other LP ports and 2 HP ports with 7/16" UNF thread. The latter are inclined at a 45° angle to allow a more ergonomic layout of hoses. For extreme demanding conditions, such as use in cold or contaminated water, the Abyss second stage is made of nickel and chrome-plated brass. These materials offer a number of benefits: ruggedness and thinner walls which allow compact dimensions obtained without using smaller-diameter diaphragms; this result in reduced water drag. The second stage ha an anti-freeze function, which is enhanced by the "radiator action" of the metal. The Abyss with its Vortex Assist Design (V.A.D.) system: all Mares second stages offer the unique patented VAD system. The air bypass tube conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a low pressure area in the center this keeps the diaphragm down during inhalation, giving very sensitive and easy breathing at all depths. The second stage cover features the new "mesh-grid" system for water inflow and outflow, which provides a further performance improvement. Furthermore, the compact and ergonomic exhaust tee ensures superior hydrodynamic performance and reduced exhalation resistance. The mouthpiece is made of soft hypoallergenic silicone: limiting jaw fatigue and offering a secure fit even after very long dives. Mares developed the Superflex hose after many years of testing and research. The results achieved far surpassed the tests required by EN250. Hose is extremely light weight and exceptionally soft, guaranteeing the maximum freedom of movement and further reducing jaw fatigue. Superflex hose is 1/2" Threaded High Flow hose and is 29.5" (75 cm) in length. Mares Abyss comes with a limited lifetime warranty.
