Shopper Has anybody used this semi-dry suit in water around 40 degrees F?
NICK F I used mine for the first time yesterday at Dutch Springs in Nazareth PA. Did 2 dives, coldest temp reached was 41 degrees. The suit was warmer than the 7mm farmer john I normally use early season and let in far less water.
TOM T Yes......regardless 40 degrees is cold water with any type of exposure suit, however this suit will allow you to dive in this temperature of water
ROBERT M I used it in 45 degrees and stayed comfortable for three 30 minute dives in a day
DAVID G We have dove this suit in 40F water when in that temperature for extended period of say 45mins we used a 1mm liner and a hooded 2mm vest underneath it. We have done 40F with just the suit on deep quarry dive but ascended to 55- 60F water. At depth was most likely 20 mins. Hope this helps.
EDWARD Z Yes, I've used it in 36F degree water. It was great but was a bit chilly after 40 minutes. It's also a true semi-dry suit.
JOHN S Yes I have, I dive in 40 degree water every winter. It is certainly doable, but quite painful. I would recommend pulling the hood as far down your forehead as possible. When I have done this I was fully immersed in the water for about 20 minutes. This wetsuit is great for cold water, but not very flexible. If you are looking for something to use for surfing, I would recommend a 7mm. You don't really need the extra mm unless you plan to be fully immersed in the water for an extended period of time. But overall, I love this wetsuit.
Shopper how buoyant is this suit?

This suit is fairly buoyant. I am 5' I 11" 190 lbs. atheletic build & use this wetsuit in fresh water only with a total of 19 lbs. of lead.(12 lbs that's dumpable and 8lbs in rear pockets to adjust swim attitude) I also use a 3300psi neutral buoyancy tank and Zeagle Stilletto BC. Actually replaced a Oneil's 7/5 Avalon for the quarries and only added 3lbs to achieve my perfect weight.
I have just one suggestion when you weight your self in do it in cool water as this is a very warm suit it's easy to get overheated in the pool while fine tuning final weight for desired swimming position. I've been diving this suit in 39 to 60 degree water and it's toasty with very little water transfer.

VICTOR V This suit is really warm. You probably cannot tell how much more buoyant it is than other suit, as you will be please with the comfort this suit provides.
STEPHEN B I wear a large. weigh 165 lbs. I need 20 lbs of weight in fresh water with this suit; so it is rather bouyant; however much less than a dry suit.

DAVID G I have been diving the Henderson 8/7 in a quarry for quite some time. I apologize for not remembering the weight increase but would suggest trying approximately 4 lbs additional.the. Suit will fell very very buoyant when first entering the water. After it saturates and you hit 10-15ft of depth that felong will subside. It is a great suit for cold water dives. We dove this suit in 40F water many times. Enjoy happy & safe diving.
A d Not very. I am very wearing the 8/7 semi-dry in size XL. I did a 100 steel tank and have a 5 pound SS back plate. I need no additional weight. Friends have the 8/7 Bare suit and they need much more weight.
BILL E Pretty much like a standard wetsuit your weighting should not change from what your using now with a wetsuit

NICK F No, the hood is not detachable.
TODD M No, it's permanently attached. You can pull the hood down and not wear it on your head, it's flexible enough to be folded down around your neck.
Shopper Will this suit be too hot for diving in warm waters (29 degrees)?
JOHN L I have used it in waters that are 75 Fahrenheit (or 25 Celsius). It may be a little warm in 29 Celsius, but it shouldn't be too bad.

NICHOLAS B If you mean 29 degrees Celsius and think that is warm then you dont need a wetsuit at all. If you mean 84 degrees Fahrenheit then you arent aware enough to go diving at all. Questions like this are why I could never work in the retail business. Thank you LeisurePro.
DAVID G Assuming we are saying 29C (84F) the Henderson 8/7 will be too warm. We dive 84F with 3mill suits basically for protection around coral growths. The 8/7 is used for 60F and lower. We do dive to 45F with the suit regularly when quarry diving.
Bottom line it is too much suit for 29C. Hope this helps.
JIM C The ans from me is NO , but getting suited UP it will be ! My first use was in the summertime and I was sweating till I hit the water ( 74'F )

Fit is large so make sure you try it on first. Also needs ton of weights. Make sure you have ample bc and if you need wgt belt also consider shoulder harness wgt belt. I used in Galapagos and was toasty warm, but had travel bc and had nightmare trying to adjust wghts with small capacity pockets and wgt belt.

JEFFREY C If you mean 29 degrees Celsius then yes this Semi-Dry will be way too warm, I usually dive in a 1 mm wetsuit without a hood for that temperature.
If you mean 29 degrees Fahrenheit then this Semi-Dry might not be entirely sufficient, a full dry suit may be better for freezing waters.
I find it to be comfortable in temperatures of around 35 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

NOAH M no its better that way u can replace socks and wear any footwear u want its a great suit for the price it kept me warm in 40 degree water and semi dry means water dribbles in. u can move good in it its comfortable the best suit ive bought and i get a wetsuit every year. very satisfyed

DAVID G This suit does not include boots. The Henderson boot and gloves work very well with this suit to mitigate water migration at the wrists and ankles. I have used the suit in extended 40F dives and can attest to it's worth. My opinion -- the products works as advertised.

BRIAN V I am a little taller 5'-8" and a little lighter 165lbs and I use the large. Its a great suit that is very comfortable and allows me to dive in 45degree water no problem. I also wear the new thermalution heated rash guard under the suit which allows me to dive in 36-45degree water for 30-40 minutes. My goal was to avoid a drysuit which are bulky and expensive. I am able to stay warm and comfortable and wear only 16 lbs of lead with a steel tank.
JOHN L I bought a small. I am 5'8" 140 and the fit is just right, although I would say it can fit someone an inch taller than me without a problem. It might be tight on you but the next size up may be a little too tall, see if you can get a test fit. If you are able to fit in the small, it may be a little tight.
STEWART B kept me very warm in galapagos..but legs a bit loose. would recommend tying on before use.
STEPHEN B I am 5" 9", 40+ inch chest,34 -35 inch waist. if I get my weight to 160, the large fits well, if I gain weight and get up to 170 or over the large is too tight. . when I get heavy I need an xl which is slighlty too large and the ankle and wrist seals are not as effecient.
DAVID G My experience is that the Henderson Sizing Chart is accurate. I am a full figured person and sized my suit according to the chart and have a great fit. I am not as tall as the chart depicts but it works great. A dive partner purchased the Henderson 8/7 after watching how well the suit performs. Remember this is a neoprene wet suit not a pair of dress trousers. The rubber is forgiving. Hope this helps. The suit is everything it is advertised to be.

JEFFREY K I never wore it. The suit is too hard to put on. It does not seem to strech as much as other suits. A dry suit is the only real way to stay warm.
THOMAS M Yes, no problems so far. I dive it regularly during the summer at a local quarry with typical temperatures in the low 50's down deep.
lax p Sizing question. I'm a slim guy - 5'10 but 31 waist, 39 chest. Clearly a borderline in sizes. Given you experience - does this suit run small (so I can comfortably order a medium) or large (so I go for a small)?
DAVID M M Sorry for delayed response. Just got access to internet. Suit runs true to size chart. Warm suit. I wear a medium and am 5'10", 155 lb. i need help zipping and doffing suit. Other than that, a nice suit. A semi-dry is really a wetsuit, so plan on water entering the suit. Good luck and happy diving.
JAMES K Suit is a bit on the bigger size. I am 6'4" 38 inch waist and 46 chest and it is roomy. Proper fit in the torso, arms are a bit tight. Great suit tho.
BILL E I would try a large first the top of the suit gets a little snug but not uncomfortable remember it's a 8mill suit so it's pretty thick material also you will get a little water in the suit but nothing like a wet suit great suit for wreck diving off nj in the summer prob is if the air temp is cold when you come out of your suit you will be pretty cold so beware
JAMES M I'm about the same size(5'11, 32 waist, and a 39 chest) and I have a medium. it fits very well, the only place its a little loose is right around the waist but its not bad at all.
JAMES K I'm 5'8", 32 waist, 40 chest and I wear a medium if that helps. Fits good.
THOMAS H I am 5'10" and 175, 33 inch waste with 42" chest, I use a large regular and it fits great,, you may already know, but you don't want these things too tight.. I bought a tall medium and it wasn't close to fitting me. I would go alittle loose and buy a large regular which is what i did.. the legs, wrists and face seal very good on me and I have skinny wrists and ankles.. googd luck.
JOHN L I'm your same build 39 chest, 32 waist, but a little shorter at 5'8" and I would say overall the fit is fine. The neck area runs a bit loose and since you want neoprene suits to fit very tightly I went with the small and I can't imagine moving up into the medium. I would recommend the small or the medium because you are slightly taller (at 5'10" the neck might stretch out more and fit better on the small), but I would def not try a large as I would assume that the fit would be too loose.
Be warned the thing is a royal pain to get on, not so bad getting off though. It will keep you warm though that's for sure.

JARED N the hood cannot be detached. It can be worn off (hanging) but would probably damage the suit or the zipper might get you during activity. This suit is great for anything cold water. I use it for activities in water between 40 and 45 degrees. Works because of the limb, zipper and face seals. Hope this helps
BENJAMIN Q For scuba you cannot really use it w/out hood. Also for anything above water ( ie canoeing even in cold water) I really don't think the suit would work. The suit is VERY WARM. I was warm in water down to about 50 degrees in it. Above water I think you will be way too warm.
BRUCE C The hood is an integral part of the suit so would have to be cut off. This would turn the suit into a wet suit (as opposed to a semi-dry). I wouldn?t do it.
RICHARD J You could use it with out the hood, it might be a little tight around the neck. But if your tolerence is ok with that. Mine(womens) is a little tight and I don't like it when I have the hood off. My husbands is ok with his off. We love these semi drys. It's been one of the best buys for scuba diving so far. I think they would be great for canoeing, but you might get pretty warm in them . When we are on the boat (Arizona) waiting between dives we get pretty warm and take the hoods off and unzip them (but the lake water is cold enough to need them.)
DAVID G The hood is attached and if not worn it will impede your head motion. Secondly as a kayaker the 8mm neoprene is too bulky to maneuver paddles etc.
Personally I would not use this suit for canoeing.
TOM T the hood is attached and is a bit bulky. Additionally for canoeing the suit itself woudl be restrictive but doable.......i woudl look at more of a kyak type suit for this application however....i do like the suit a lot for cold water diving though....hope this helps
EDWARD Z The hood is attached and cannot be removed. It's pretty uncomfortable around the neck with the hood down for long periods of time. No, I wouldn't recommend it. The suit is for scuba diving not canoeing where you need movement throughout.
DAVID M M I would not recommend this for canoeing. The hood is attached. The neoprene is too thick and restricts movement. If you are going to wear a wetsuit (which I don't think is appropriate for canoeing, then I would recommend a 5 mm Henderson hyperstretch. Wetsuits are not windproof or waterproof and will make you sweat. Also consider a trilaminate dry suit. Good luck. David Miller
JASON G TThe hood is attached and unavoidable. You could push it past your face, but its a lot of neoprene to have bunched up behind your head. I would NOT recommend this for surface water sports like canoeing. You want a dry suit for canoers, not the variety made for diving. You can layer up nicely under one of them. It might be more expensive but this suit will deteriorate a lot quicker on the surface due to uv exposure.

JOHN L The hood is attached to the suit but you can flip it back and stick your head out of the face opening (it has alot of stretch to it). It may be too tight on your neck to breathe easily if you wear it like that though. I tried walking around like that and found it uncomfortable.
As for canoeing; I have not tried using it for that yet, but I am sure it would work well if you are in cold water.
JEFFREY C No, The hood is not detachable. Once the zipper goes up to your chest you pretty much need to move the hood over your head or you may break the zipper.
I'm not sure about canoeing, but I think this may be too warm to wear outside of the water. You might want to get a regular wet suit and not a semi dry one for that purpose.
