Questions about this item:
Rich B Another question ... How many years will tide information be valid?
Also, are batteries readily available and can be changed by myself or at a watch shop?
PAUL G Tide info valid until 2039. Change batteries when they stop working at a watch repair shop. Used it yesterday on the chesapeake bay and it worked excellent! Enjoy!!
KOSTYANTYN P When I bought my Casio SPF40 I asked the same question to the Casio technicians. They answered, that it is better to do this in a watch shop, or even send it to Casio, unless you really know what you are doing. There are springs that can jump and you'll never find them again (from their explanation). Plus they can replace a sealing washer too. According to the manual it is desirable to replace it every 3-4 years. Anyway, I bought my Casio SPF40 in 2007 and did not change batteries yet ;)
MARLIN L the tidal information is based on the lat/ lon location info you input into the settings, and the watch calculates tidal movement. you can adjust those settings, and the GMT to fine tune the tide indicator. i have to adjust the settings occasionally to re-calibrate the tidal indicator to be more accurate, but for the most part it is on the mark.
the compass is not to be taken serious, as it is not accurate as one would like it to be. I sail, and when the watch compass is tested against line of sight on a known location, and the boat compass, the watch is off by a long shot. If you used the watch compass to sail to catalina island, you'd miss it and wouldn't see land until Hawaii. I've tried to calibrate it many times, but have concluded that its more of a vanity than a tool. It may be more easily affected by magnetic fields generated by the rigging and electronics than other compasses.
Batteries are readily available at most supermarkets. Have had the watch for 3 years now, and haven't had to change the battery yet. I'd take it to the mall to have someone do it, but if you where out in the middle of nowhere, then i'd pack a tool that could unscrew the back off to change.
JIM H As long as the date is set correctly the tide info should be correct...not accounting for global warming, of course.
The batteries need to be changed by a watch shop.
Rich B How many locations can the tide be set for?
KOSTYANTYN P Hello, Rich B!
A short answer: One location.
A long answer: Technically, you set lunitidal interval (the time lag between culmination of the Moon and the nearest high tide). For each location this time lag is different. If you change your location, just enter new lunitidal interval and the watch will predict tides for this location. I do not find this too restrictive, unless you have your own jet and fly all around the world (breakfast in Miami, lunch on Hawaii, ...). But in this case it would be, possibly, easier to buy separate watches for each favorite location :)
There is a table of lunitidal intervals for several cities in the watch manual. I (personally) did not find it useful. I am on the US West Coast and the nearest city from this table was hundreds miles away from my home. Hours of straightforward Google search did not bring success, so I calculated lunitidal interval for my location by myself. It is not that difficult, as it sounds. Detailed description how to do this you can find in
http://helios.gsfc.nasa.gov/qa_earth.html#lunitidal
Best regards.

Shopper How can this watch be used to determine the best time to fish?
LeisurePro S It will show you on the screen based on lunar equations.
