good quality, very visible

By cavalluccio

This is a great signal that I use all the time as a divemaster when guiding my groups on drift dives. This signal can be inflated at depth with a regulator or octopus, and it WILL fully inflate and WILL NOT pull you to the surface. With that said...properly launching a signal does take a bit of practice so I can see why some reviewers stated the contrary.

Appears to be great quality

By HUGH A.

Haven't tried it in the water yet; however at least on land, I'm very impressed with the features and quality of construction. It seems large even when rolled up; however, that will make it more visable.

Blue Reef Diver Below Deluxe 6' (1.83m) Signal Tube:
The Blue Reef "Diver-Below" Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) is a great safety device that all serious divers carry on every dive. The SMB is the smart way for a diver to mark their location when making safety stops, completing mandatory decompression stops and signaling the boat if they surface a distance away from the boat. This 6' (1.83m) long signal tube can be stowed easily in a large pocket or clipped out of the way on your BCD. When the SMB is inflated it is long enough to be easily seen from a distance and sturdy enough to stand up to any weather conditions you may encounter. It is also conveniently labeled with "DIVER BELOW" so you can send it up to mark your location.

The SMB features an easy to use oral inflation valve with lock to prevent accidental deflation as well as a larger over-pressure/dump valve. The SMB is also equipped with a D-ring at the top for attachment of a light, strobe or chemical light for use at night. This deluxe model also features a special "no spill" second stage inflation option for quick and easy inflation from any second stage regulator. The SMB also comes equipped with a 360-degree swivel gate clip and all edges are taped for reinforcement and durability. Blue Reef's SMB's are available in multiple colors. Don't risk not being seen in an emergency, pick up a Diver-Below SMB today.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Shopper  does this come with line and reel?
JOHN B  No
SANDRA V  No, I don't recall that it does. What is nice is that it can be manually inflated by mouth, as well as inflated from the bottom with your octopus. I like my SMB, but I think a shorter one would be less bulky to put in the pocket or attach to BCD. Need to trade off carrying size with size of device you want to be seen with in the water.
PATRICK R  It does not
DON R  Is as. No line or reel
CHRIS C  NO seperate
ROBERT C  How wide is it? Does it have any reflective material on it for night use?
JANICE B  7.5" wide. No relective material
CHRISTOPHER P  It's a pretty fat sausage. Not the fattest, but it's not one of the dinky ones. It has a D ring at the top to clip a night flasher or glow stick to
Shopper  What is the difference between the Blue Reef SMB and the Blue Reef DELUXE SMB?
YAN G  Deluxe has an open bottom with a baffle so you can inflate with a 2nd stage.
GARY B  Basically little difference and would not purchase another. As I have gained experience, I use the Hollis SMB exclusively. Don't scrimp on such a valuable piece of equipment.
MATTHEW L  I only have the deluxe so not 100% sure but I believe it's a heavier more durable materials
Shopper  Is the lift strong enough to use as a safety-stop hang-line?
CHARLES H  I think for more experienced divers certainly yes. But for less experience divers, more than one diver, maybe no??? One caution when using for its intended purpose. No matter how much or how little air you put in it. It rarely stands upright in even the slightest wind. Unless applying a great deal of downward force. Just from my own experience... Chuck
PAUL F  I would not use this item for that pupose. It is a very good Surface Marker though
SHERRI L  I would say Yes. This is a very sturdy well made surface marker.
INIGO G  Yes, the buoy holds enough air to help suspend a couple divers but it doesn't come with a line.
SHAWN B  How do you inflate it using a second stage regulator?
MARK S  if you're using ur 2nd stage primary (i do not recommend this) vs a 2nd stage secondary (pony bottle, etc) inflation is the same- unroll beacon, then fire air into low end using purge valve-- i prefer to inflate it using the oral inflation valve provided
WILLIAM K  Insert the marker buoy inflator valve fully into the second stage mouth piece to make good contact with the far side. At the same time depress the flushing button on the second stage This action will depress the valve lock allowing air to flow into the tube. One must remember to place a secondary air source, octopus, Air 2 or similar in their mouth to maintain successful breathing. It is simpler to take a large breath from the second stage and orally inflate the buoy. A small amount of air will inflate the buoy depending on the depth, of course
FRANKIE C  you can not inflate it with the second stage. you inflate it with yr mouth. the mouth piece has a built in valve to make the inflation easier.
MATTHEW O  The bottom of the buoy is open, allowing you to insert your second stage. There is a small restriction in the buoy a little further up from the bottom that helps to keep it inflated once you've deployed it.
CHRISTOPHER P  Bottom of bag is open with a flap mechanism that allows air in but not out. It works well and is easy to use.
ALBERTO G  I RETURNED MINE!!! Read gis514 review already posted. Here it is anyway. By gis514 from Miami, Fl I purchased this item in preparation for my annual trip to Cozumel. This is a very important item to use on any dive especially all the drift dives of Coz. After the first dive, It filled up with water. This repeated itself on all dives thereafter. I had to resort to my smaller safety sausage. DO NOT BUT THIS ITEM!!!!!!!!
GARRY K  The SMB has magnets to close the bottom. Pull magnets apart, insert octopus into the smb and push the purge button on octopus. If at surface remember to keep bottom of smb underwater about 2 inches. If at safety stop you need to add a reel and line to the smb. Do not hold onto the smb as you add air from octopus or you will go to the surface with the smb. Let the inflated smb ascent on the line as it unwinds from the reel. When smb gets to surface, pull back on line to keep the bottom of the smb underwater. This will prevent the air from escaping and also keep the smb standing upright.
