First, I believe that dive computers provide so much useful information that I consider them to be essential safety gear. Basic models today are so inexpensive that there isn't really a cost barrier to ownership like there was a decade ago. Even (especially) if you travel and still rent gear, own a computer that you know thoroughly and trust. That said, the XR-2 would be high on my recommended list as a first computer for a new diver or a backup computer for a recreational diver.

I purchased this as a backup wrist computer after I had a console computer battery fail without warning during a dive in cold water. During dives now, I actually find myself referring to the XR-2 more often than the console computer because it's just right there on the wrist.

This model has been around long enough to work out any bugs that some of the new models seem to have. The design is proven and does the job well but it is almost the size of a hockey puck, not as compact as some of the newer models. I use both styles and alternate depending on the dive. I like the bigger size, it makes the face easier to read. The size isn't intrusive at all while diving but you're not going to wear it around town like a wristwatch either.

This is a solid workhorse computer that is simple enough for new divers but has the capability to handle more advanced needs including nitrox and night dives with the built in backlight and the USB download capability.

I also use and like the Suunto computers. Everything has it's advantages and disadvantages so take into consideration the kind of diving you'll do. My Suunto's have more advanced features like deep stops and gas switching during a dive but the Aeris models are more intuitive and a little more liberal with no-deco times.

I wanted something a little better than basic entry but also didn't want to spend a whole lot. This computer has audible alarms, ability to download to the PC (need a separate cable about $70), easy to read display with large numbers. Theres only 2 buttons to press, so you don't have to pull out the operating manual every time you want to get reacquainted. There's really just 3 screens to toggle thru in dive mode which gives me all the info I care about. Oh yeah, it has wet activation too in case you forget to turn it on before you jump it. It's very similar to my husbands Hollis DG02 but the Aeris has a split screen that makes viewing your nitrogen and ascent rate very easily and quickly. I absolutely love it. I'm a fairly new diver but I think it has just enough bells and whistles should I decide to go into more advanced diving, such as Nitrox. Leisure Pro's price was easily $100 cheaper than similar online stores. I've used one for a couple of years and loved it. VERY easy to use. Bought one fo the wife to use on a recent trip. She can't even change a car tire herself but found this easy to read and use. Battery changing is straightforward, but it's hard to tell that the O-ring is properly seated on the battery compartment.
