(based on 27 ratings)
Brand: Tusa
Located in: Essential Equipment, Snorkels
The SP-170 Platina II Hyperdry snorkel is TUSA's premier semi-dry snorkel incorporating several features such as the patented Hyperdry System making this one of the most stylish and feature packed snorkels on the market. The Hyperdry System keeps the main pipe dry by ejecting water through an independent escape pipe. This unique design utilizes the angle of the snorkel pipe and the resilience of the water surface to eject water. The Comfort Swivel offers a more comfortable fit since it creates no load on the mouthpiece straightens out during diving and doesn't get in the way. The swivel adapter makes it possible to slip the mask strap into the slit with no hassles. The two-part construction allows the snorkel to rotate and can be attached in a horizontal position. The High Flow Purge design used on TUSA snorkels offers a covered large diameter purge valve for simple, quick clearing, reducing the amount of water remaining in the mouthpiece in an instant.

Comments about Tusa Tusa Platina II Hyperdry Snorkel (SP-170):

I used it in Cozumel for snorkeling and diving. The top piece covering the air inlet fell off within an hour of being in the water and I couldn't find it again. Really bummed out b/c it was hard to find a red snorkel. It worked OK the rest of the time but who know what else would have fallen off with repeated use.

I use the snorkel for surface scuba swims in heavy seas so I need a snorkel to breathe easily. I returned this as it felt too restrictive and went back to my trusty US Divers Aquarius.

Comments about Tusa Tusa Platina II Hyperdry Snorkel (SP-170):

I have owned several snorkels and this is the first one that I am completely satisfied with. It is light-weight, low-profile, easy to breathe, aquadynamically designed, impressively resistent to flooding, easy to purge, it looks cool and it has a comfortable mouthpiece. It's worth noting that this is not a "truly dry" snorkel. That is, it doesn't have any sort of mechanism that seals the bore when you submerge. I have owned those types of snorkels and didn't really like them as they had a tendency to close up at inopportune times, and occassionally got stuck. Although the Tusa is not "truly dry", it is very intelligently engineered and reduces flooding by, I would say, more than 50%. When it does flood (which is not often) it is very easy to clear. I use a snorkel when I scuba dive and this one does a great job of staying out of the way, not creating much drag, AND it has a clip (plus it's foldable) so you can easily remove it from your mask and store it in your BC if you felt so inclined. Again, I have had several snorkels (none of which were cheap) and this is the only one I've been happy with and the only one I would replace with an identical one should it end up broken or lost.

I have been diving for 13 years. I have always used the same ole snorkel and thought I was fine with that. Upgraded to this masterpiece and couldn't be happier. This is definantly a snorkel for those of us who don't like cheap breakable mechanisms. No flaps floats or otherwise on this one. Just simple engineering and a great design. Purges easily, did the job...and that's all that matters right. Oh by the way...I'm extremely picky when it comes to quality. 5 Stars

Comments about Tusa Tusa Platina II Hyperdry Snorkel (SP-170):

Very, very nice snorkel. Since it's bendable and not rigid, it's comfortable to wear. I also found the mouthpiece nice and soft; no jaw fatigue.
I wouldn't say this snorkel is dry, because it isn't, but not much water got in and it's easy to clear with one blast. I'd also mention that for people with long hair, you might want to consider replacing the clip that's included with this snorkel with a plain ol' loop style (Leisure Pro sells them). The original clip was forever getting tangled in my hair, but I had no problem once I replaced it. Overall, great product.

I've been an Instructor for 20yrs. and there's a lot of equipment out there but I have found that Tusa has always been at the top when it comes to mask, fins, and snorkels. In the past few yrs with all the mini mask and low volum mask sherwook hasreally come to the top by making a mask that others did away with yrs ago and the full mask are far more comfortable and easier to clear. Thanks again now if only I can get you guys to carry the adjust a strap made by slap strap this would be great. Its the same strap except the right side the strap is reversed were as you can adjust it on the go. There Great I carried them for yrs. when I was a dealer sure hope to see some one carry them soon. Comments about Tusa Tusa Platina II Hyperdry Snorkel (SP-170):

I've been using an Aeris Tawali and while it's OK, it never really fit comfortably on my mask. Like most snorkels you had to be careful with that 1st breath after clearing to avoid getting a mouthful of water.

After taking with a couple of the older divers in my club I ordered the Tusa Platina. It's airflow is much better and the snorkel fits in my mask/mouth w/o any problem.

The best part however is how well it purges. The big bulb at the bottom allows any water that remains after you clear it with your first breath to rest down over the purge valve and not at the level of the mouthpiece. As long as I keep the bulb as the lowest point, I can't suck up a mouth full of water no matter how sharply I inhale.

The little translucent water diverting piece that sits on top of the snorkel does pop off rather easily when I slip my neoprene snorkel keeper on and off. If like me you don't fancy the supplied plastic clip, you might want to either glue it on or simply remove it altogether.

i used to use a no-frills plastic-pipe cheap snorkel. i was skeptical of the advantages of an expensive snorkel. however i was nicely surprised. i do think the purge valve works far better, and the top part keeps the water out better too. the attachment clip is very good too. this snorkel is very streamlined. i can hardly feel it's there and it clears very easily. i never get water in my mouth anymore. if i use my old snorkel now, i drink a lot. this new one is great. i'll never go back to anything less. thanks TUSA.

Comments about Tusa Tusa Platina II Hyperdry Snorkel (SP-170):

Great snorkel for a great price. Purges well, very little water enters. The only thing I was kinda iffy about was the plastic connector to the mask. I don't really not how long that will last, maybe for a long time maybe not, I guess I'm not used to using that type of connector & don't have much trust in it. Other than that very small & compact snorkel. So far I love it.

Comments about Tusa Tusa Platina II Hyperdry Snorkel (SP-170):

I have 4 TUSA snorkels (obviously, I like them). This one is just the latest design and has the same kind of purge valve at the bottom of the mouthpiece and the Hyperdry overflow at the top as the previous Hyperdry models. Improvements from the Imprex II Hyperdry include:
3 rectifying plates in the upper hyperdry system, help water flow out before entering the pipe.
More ergonomic mouthpiece.
Detachable swivel connector, reduces feeling of pull on the mouthpiece.
Slightly flattened pipe, angled better for snorkeling.

It works great!

I loved this snorkel the first time I used it. Going from an Aqualung snorkel to this was a big difference. Mainly because the Aqualung snorkels were a bit big and had excess drag when diving or freediving.

The purge on this is as good as any I've used, and even in really dirty water, it clears well.

All in all a great recreational snorkel, I've already gotten 3 friends using this.
