FIRST STAGE

Mares V16 First stage is the latest version of the balanced diaphragm regulator. In addition to all the characteristics that have made the success of this Mares product, including the DFC system, the V16 is also equipped with the now famous SCS (Spherical Core Seal) valve for longer life. The piston shuts off the flow of air by means of a highly durable titanium hemisphere, which is unassailable by oils or grease.

The valve seat is made from a special high strength technopolymer. Two HP ports and four LP ports, pre-positioned for rational hose routing. The shock and scratch-resistant black coating is unique and makes the V16 the perfect companion for hundreds of dives.

SECOND STAGE

Light weight, ruggedness, high performance and simple construction. These are the distinguishing features of this brand new and ultra-compact second stage. Two-component body for a unique look, coupled with superior mechanical characteristics. Integrated VAD by-pass system, for effortless, natural breathing under all conditions. Coverplate with ultra-light alloy ring, anodized and incorporating the "mesh-grid" system for maximum performance. "Super-soft" hose and a new orthodontic mouthpiece for unparalleled comfort.

Worst Reg ever
By ozk from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on 3/19/2007
Pros:
Comfortable, Nitrox Compatible
Cons:
Durability, Maintanance, Poor Design, Spares
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Mares Mares V-16 Proton XL Regulator:

I believe Mares should stick to masks and suits because they are lousy in Regulators. 4 Different Dive Centres encouraged me not to buy Mares and I did anyway. The 1st stage is complex and service is not widely available. Mares does not have a simple and straightforward design so asking for spares was a nightmare.

Comments about Mares Mares V-16 Proton XL Regulator:

I have owned this set for almost two years and I have had excellent performance in 100+ dives. In all circumstances (mostly tropical waters, from Red Sea to Galapagos) it has performed admirably. However, I find it big and heavy -particularly, when I'm packing- but overall I'm very satisfied with it.

Comments about Mares Mares V-16 Proton XL Regulator:

Used this regulator on 7 dives so far with not problem. The first dives were in a fresh water crater down to 70 ft. Had absolutely no problem with the regulator. I then went to Jamaica and easily dove to 110 ft. I was a bit worried that the 2nd stage had no adjustment knob, but didn't have any need for it. Only once did I have free flow at the surface, which was easily remedied with a quick shake. Had the same air flow at the surface as at 110 ft. The hoses were a little stiff such that I did notice a slight jaw fatigue. But that was really minor. For no-deco diving, you won't be down long enough to let it bother you. I highly recommend this regulator. I've tried a lot of rental regulators previously. While this is my first purchased regulator, it seems to be the best value for the money.
