'xtremely compact and lightweight, this octopus is characterized by its small size, simple construction and outstanding performance,which make it ideal for use as an alternative air source. It has a two-component body, integrated VAD system; all Mares second stages offer the unique patented VAD system. The air bypass tube conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a lowpressure area in the center this keeps the diaphragm down during inhalation, giving very sensitive and easy breathing at all depths.The second stage cover features the new "mesh-grid" system for water inflow and outflow, which provides a further performance improvement. Furthermore, the compact and ergonomic exhaust tee ensures superior hydrodynamic performance and reduced exhalation resistance. The mouthpiece is made of soft hypoallergenic silicone: limiting jaw fatigue and offering a secure fit even after very long dives.

Great little occy with plenty of air for your buddy when needed. Fantastic yellow Miflex hose at just the right length.I use a full metal orbiter as main reg & V16 Ist stage......Best combination for my use.....Cheers

Again, another product holding up to the Mares name. I trust this octopus to work when it absolutely needs to. When I first had this octopus I breathed on it for about 5 minutes during a dive and have to say that it is better than some primary regulators out there.

I dive the beaches of Southern California 2-4 times per week. I loved the compact design of this octo but after 20+ dives on it I've had a free flow problem that I can't correct and I'll have to have it serviced. I'd probably buy another model if I had to do it again.

I know I can count it if I ever need it.

Nice octo second stage. Hope to never need it but I definitely know it will work when I do. Mares makes very good quality equipment and this proton is definitely very well made. I highly recommend it.

I'd gotten complaints about my original octo (the LPO), and so stepped up to this one based upon the recommendation of a friend who dives with the Proton as his primary. It's lightweight, easily visible, and breathes well. Unfortunately, it's been somewhat prone to free-flowing, so much so that I wound up using it as my primary on a recent dive trip. I wouldn't have expected, but it performed very well as a primary. Under rare demanding conditions, it could have breathed a little bit easier (I'm thinking of possibly panicked buddies here), but that would probably only exacerbate the free-flowing. Overall, though, this is an awesome octo (and a pretty good primary).
