The Mares Excel+ is the perfect combination of comfort and power for recreational divers. The fin blade is made of Tecraclene: bladewith four channels for optimizing water flow, the center channel is inverted to make better use of the glide stroke. The upper and lower stabilizers help maximize muscle energy conversion. Tecraclene ribs in the foot pocket afford an improved fit and permit more efficient transmission of the kicking action. The elastic Optimized Pivot Blade (OPB) system ensures that the blade is always at an optimal angle during both the upward and downward strokes, giving considerably increased efficiency.

Buckle failed on my third dive -- plastic snapped in two mid-kick.

I find these fins add a lot of stress to the ankle and foot. I am a tall slim guy and I find that these fins actually cup and move too much water vertically as opposed to generating forward power. Because these fins move so much water they actually tend to move you around if you're slim.

If you're a bigger person and like a REALLY stiff fin then this in the one for you. Otherwise, I'd be looking at other fins.

These are the stiffest mares fins by far. On the plus side they give a lot of thrust when frog-kicking, comparable in feel to jetfins/slipstream (but more comfortable). Helicopter turns are ok, reverse swim is possible but not easy. If you're a big/stocky dude and you're pushing heavy gear through current, then they're perfect. If not then the classic Quattro is a better choice, IMHO; cheaper, less foot and ankle stress, more maneuverable, and still plenty of power.

I have no comment on the complicated mares buckles because I installed spring straps straight away when I bought them. I wear a US 11.5 and the regular size fits perfect with 5mm boot. Stiffness generates a lot of pressure on top of the foot; I wouldn't want to try the original version with the half plastic foot pocket top. Still, more comfortable and better fit than oms slipstream or jets.

Im an advanced open water diver who uses the mares excel plus, they are great fins, a bit heavy and long but very efficient and provide great thrust.
Great for all-around diving, not too flexible/soft nor too stiff/hard, just in between. Highly recommended.

Get spring straps immediately or carry a pry bar to open the buckle. Locked or unlocked it doesn't matter, they don't work. Like all Mare products they have to make something that is garbage. Not only would I not recommend these to a friend I wouldn't give them to a friend, could barely bring myself o give these to an enemy.
