Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect image

(based on 59 ratings)
Brand: Aqualung
Located in: Essential Equipment, Computers
Suunto Cobra combines several technological innovations into one product. It is the only air-integrated dive computer with air, Nitrox, and gauge modes complete with profile memory on the market. In addition to the extensive information provided by the Vyper, the Cobra displays cylinder pressure and estimated remaining air time. The air-consumption of a dive is stored as a used-pressure value in the logbook memory for future reference.

Cobra offers the new Suunto Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM), which is a unique algorithm for predicting both dissolved and free gas in the blood and tissues of divers. This development combines the latest knowledge in diving technology with the classic Haldane model. The advantage of the RGBM is its ability to adapt to a wide variety of diving situations. For added safety, the Cobra features the original Suunto innovation: separate three-step personal and altitude adjustments.

Please note: The compass we sell is calibrated for Zone 1

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

no clear directions were provided; both the manuel & the flowchart are complicated. You have to scroll thru too many options/screens to get to the air/nitrox screen. the keys are diffuclt at best and worse when wearing gloves and the backlight is poor.

I would not reccommend this diver computer.

reallynice piece of equipment. A bit busy to read, especially for 50 yr old eyes, but you quickly learn where the particular parameters are. I like the quick disconnect. The software should be included. I may buy it, but previous reviews were mixed. Still I would like to be able to get a profile of my dives.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

The display is great. I also love that it's air integrated. You can estimate bottom time based on air consumption during your dive. The amount of air you consumed is also available in your log after the dive. I also love the quick-disconnect hose. And setup is pretty intuitive.
There is no seconds timer for your safety stop and you can't see the seconds tick down when you are at depth. My Oceanic Veo200 does show seconds - I wish my Cobra did. I also noticed that my Cobra gave me less bottom time than everyone else who was on the boat. This can be an issue for repetitive dives and it was a little bit of an issue for me.
On another note, I bought my computer used in "Excellent" condition from LeisurePro. The computer arrived in good condition, but it was missing the clear protective cover, the compass and housing was pretty beat up and the battery had to be replaced before I could dive with it. Next time I will pay a few more bucks and buy new.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I have had two Suunto ski watches (I am a ski instructor) and they have functioned well beyond all expectations. When it came time to shop for a dive computer, Suunto started at the top of my list, and all the additional research I did confirmed their position.

The dive computer I decided on was a Cobra. The Cobra is a great computer both in function and versatility, as a recreational diver I should never out grow it capability.
Suunto Cobra dive computer features: air integration, imperial and metric, programmable altitudes, nitrox and compressed air use, multiple fitness levels for safer diving, dive planning for maximum dive time, the ability to download dives into your computerized dive log, and so much more.

When I started to zero in on the Cobra, I thought it had too many bells and whistles?
As I thought about it, I came to the conclusion this computer will grow with me as I grow as a diver. Every Dive Master I have worked with all have glowing phase for Suunto, and the Corba is a very reliable unit.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

All the information you need is on the screen - no guess work about air time remaining, PSI, no deco time, alerts - it is all there. Good PC Logbook. The algorithm is a little conservative, but it ensures your safety. But, if you do repetitive 60-80ft diving with less than an hour surface interval, you will definitely get close to violations - but you shouldn't dive like this anyway.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

Great computer. I'm very happy with this purchase. The ascent monitor is very conservative (33ft / min) vs. recommended limit of 60ft / min. Be a SAFE diver though - so the slower the better. The recommended and mandatory safety stops are great. No fly countdown is great. Deco mode functionality is very good too. Definitely go with the QD option so you can take the unit off your BC for logging dives, travel, security, etc.

I did have some problems with the unit leaking from the QD connection. Good thing I checked the unit before I dived with it. I believe this was Leisure Pro's fault. I had to basically separate the QD from the computer and noticed that the grease they used near the o-ring had dried up and was flaking off. It was making a air-tight complete seal impossible. After cleaning it, everything was fine.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I am a recreational diver and have found this to be just what I need. Even the compass is great in times of poor visibility with the compass window adjacent the console making it very easy to use. Not having used a dive computer in the past it has taught me to be more safety conscious in the water espescially with with regards decompression stops etc. The only "con" is that I haven't heard the alarm on occasions but this may well have been because of the poor conditions that I was diving in. In saying that I am yet to investigate as to how or if I can increase the alarm volume.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

The feature that sets Suunto computers apart from the rest is the ease of battery replacement. Not only are they easy to replace by the user in virtually anyplace --even on a boat if necessary-but the battery types are common and cheap. I always keep a spare in my dive bag. Since the day my Aladdin Air-X transmitter failed without warning halfway on a 40 meter deep wreck dive and I didn't have a backup gauge, I vouched never to buy a computer that wasn't physically conected to the tank and the battery was user replaceable and common. The cobra is precisely that.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I trained with this computer and liked it so I bought one. I have had no problems with it. One thing I don't like is it does not record temp unless you are at that temp for around 15 minutes. I often dip below the thermocline in area lakes and wish it would record the temp because I don't stay in that cold water for that long.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I have about 10 dives with this computer, and it has made them better than my previous 50. I "downgraded" from wireless air-integrated, back to just regular air-integrated, and couldn't be happier! Wireless is still plagued with reliability issues. This computer does all the thinking, as it should, and allows me to concentrate on dives. The menu buttons are fast and responsive. I had a wrist-mounted suunto SK-7 compass that I wanted to mount on the computer, and suunto nor any retailer would sell me just the mount without purchasing another compass. Big waste of money obviously, but I scouted around local dive shops and found a suunto mount with an old compass in it in someone's spare parts bin and took the mount home after prying the compass out for $5 . Fits perfectly! All in all, great computer so far, and the price was unbeatable. Would definintely recommend for air-integrated users.

This is a very good computer. I bought two, two years ago and have had no troubles. Have 150 - 200 hundred dives on each computer and the orginal batteries are still going strong. It took a little time to learn how to walk thru the functions in the beginning. I added the quick release and a compass to my units.

I am on my 3rd Suunto Cobra Dive computer and will never buy another one. I highly recommend that everyone stay away from this product until they can become more reliable and will back it with a universal warranty.[...] I am an avid shore diver and this computer failed me in Fiji, I brought a spare computer that saved the trip for me. I now use the Suunto as a backup and dive the Oceanic Proplus II, I have had no problems and no that warranty issues will be no big deal.

an excellent computer for the rec diver. has low air warning which is a plus for those dive your too amazed by sea life. and works with nitrox. had it down to 155ft and it works like a charm. the indiglo light is nice too. my favorite for this though is the air time remaining calculator. tells you not only bottom time left but air time left as well.. very nice

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I like the technology behind it, however after 1 year (680 dives)the the digits for tank pressure started to disappear. Also, the ascent rate meter was very difficult to read - had to remove the guard to read it at all. The ascent rate meter is VERY important if you want a long career (like 15,000 dives - good luck if you don't follow the rules).

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

My wife and I are both using this model for about 3 years now. We've picked it primarily for its conservative RGBM algorithm that accounts for microbubble formation too (see review in ScubaDiving mag a few years back; most dive computers use the much older Haldanean algorithm which ignores microbubbles) and the quality of info presentation. Air-integration was a must-have for us too. It is so easy to use and intuitive that you don't have to read the manual at all. You can be an expert in it in 10mins flat of button pushing. It is easy to read underwater and the alerts are both timely and intuitive (flashing for minor problems, beeps for major ones). The Suunto compass it's usually paired with is, simply put, the best compass money can buy.The quick disconnect kit is optional but I strongly recommend it as you can leave the regulators behind and just take the computers with you when needed (for example, after dive, you can leave the gear with the shop but take only the computers in the room to download dive data). If you spring for the quick disconnect, let a professional shop install it for you. Looks easy but it's not and it's not worth the trouble if you do break it (like I did). The computer itself is very reliable. The only problem we had was that we cracked the protective shield once and had to replace it (it's a [$] plastic shield, trivial to replace at home). That was about it. Never had false alerts, hiccups, etc. Battery lasts forever it seems. We are on our 3rd year, about 50 dives and countless PC downloads (see below) and the battery is still showing "full" on both of them. One downside is the Suunto PC download kit. Unlike the computer itself, the kit is of pretty poor quality and a pain to use because it's both difficult to attach to the computer (you download via the two tiny water contact pins so it's hard to make good electrical contact) and it has a lame download algorithm which aborts the download at any error so you are forced to retry over and over. I've once spent 2h to download a single dive (about 100 retries all requiring multiple button clicks; most of the time it works in 1-2 tries though). The data it downloads is still enormously useful and much more accurate than manual reads so it's still worth the trouble. It's just sad that such a great computer was matched with such a lame download kit.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

The Cobra is the best dive buddy I have. The clear screen and information friendly display takes the guesswork out of diving. I’ve had my cobra for 3 years and logged about 300 dives on it. I never had a mechanical problem and felt I needed to state this since I read the review of another diver with a bad experience. I feel the cobra is one of the best dive computers on the market. A definite good buy.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I brought the Suunto in 2005 as market indicated a reliable integrated unit.
I am disappointed in the unit as the deco stops are oversensitve. I dive on average twice a month still use the unit but recognise its shortcomings.
When in Truk Lagoon on a 50m air dive it the decompression stop went haywire and gave me an unrealistic stop. Even though I was last diver out it had 44mins of deco left and other divers in guided group were out of the water. As I eventually had to get out with 44mins left the computer went into error mode. This could have ruined my travel holiday but I was able to reset the comp by pulling out the battery otherwise it goes into error mode for 40 hours.
Otherwise the computer works well for what it is but compared to over comps it is very sensistive if you go up too quick or if your moving up and down over structure. More so than other computers. The Truk dive was guided and I hung with the group especially considering the depth.

Comments about Aqualung Suunto "Cobra" Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer Console with Compass & Quick Disconnect:

I know the Cobra2 is out already but my Cobra unit broke after 4 months of use. Was on a night dive at 60 feet and all of a sudden the Cobra Sunnto went nuts and displayed 177 feet for 200 minutes. Luckily, the pressure gauge was still accurate. Returned to dive shop and they sent it back to Suunto. Got it back in 3 weeks.

I treat my equipment like gold. Was surprised that this went on the fritz. Maybe the Cobra2 is more reliable.

If you like consoles, this is a great computer. I bought this unit in 2001 after reading great reviews of a fairly conservative computer. I have used it extensively in local quarries, Florida, and the Caribbean. I bought one for my son when he stated diving and I'll buy another for my other son later this year when he gets cetified. Get the COMPASS with it.

Very satisfied and comfortable with this computer. Challenging to learn how to use it at first. Manual is busy and complex. I own 3 regulators and I would gladly upgrade the other 2 with this product.
