Brand: Oceanic
Located in: Essential Equipment, Buoyancy Compensators
Oceanic's Islander BCD is out to make your diving experiences as comfortable as possible. The weight-integrated Islander offers great range of motion, comfort, and style. The large Velcro¦ pockets, weight-integration system, sturdy construction (denier nylon), and rear-inflation system keep this BC flying off of our shelves.

With the Islander, Oceanic has given you the freedom to organize your gear in the fashion that suits you. The Islander has been outfitted with 16 attachment loops instead of the standard D-ring attachment points. If you want your console a little closer to your shoulder, put it there! If you want it a little further down on your BC, you can put it there, too.

The Islander's streamline design means you'll move through the water with little effort. It also means you're less likely to accidentally disrupt the sea life and environment because your gear will be close to you instead of bumping into the reef, fish, sea floor, etc. The Islander offers a retractable attachment point, so you can keep your gear close whenever it is not needed. This feature is ideal for your light, console, or camera.

Comments about Oceanic Oceanic Islander BC, Black/Blue:

Well guys, I'm a Bulgarian Advanced OW diver, having more than 50 certified + more non-certified dives. I'm diving in Black Sea (known by the big amplitude between deeps: surface 25C, on 30 meters around 7-9C), Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and Red Sea. My previous BCD was ScubaPro. I was ok, but it wasn't very comfortable for video-shooting. Oceanic is different. Actually, you will not feel the air in your jacket. No pressure on body or some embarrassment on shoulders. The construction of this BCD is extremely clever. With it, you can move easier and in a spectacular free way. Witch was my aim, because I'm an amateur video shooter and a need a lot of freedom down the water. Congratulations to Oceanic and I should say: guys, if you need a free ride down there, I strongly recommend you this Oceanic BCD!

Comments about Oceanic Oceanic Islander BC, Black/Blue:

Bought two of these for Aruba. Both of us are occasional/recreational divers. The nylon tank belt seemed to have stretched out during our first two dives(I recommend doing this several times right after purchase); but after that it was a solid, functional BCD. Unexpectedly, we got two different models- the small did not have the non-dumpable weight pockets (which are nice), and the dumpable pockets on the small weren't quite as nice (and without a clear explanation of how to use them, or pictures- Oceanic needs to do a better job there). Excellent travel BCD, easy to clean and use. On one dive the air did not appear to be releasing/redistributing properly, and had to do a bottoms-up air dump from the valve, which was a bit irritating- but very easy to do once we figured it out.
Lightweight, easy to use, and especially easy to clean and carry; but perhaps not enough lift for very large folks (excellent for us!).
The Probe I had was a bit large, and the nylon tore after a couple dozen dives. These are much nicer to travel with, though the Islander does not appear to have as many attachment points.

The integrated weights are positioned perfectly and easy to adjust weight configuration. the octo/inflator works well once you get used to it, leaves room for my poney bottle when doing rescue dives. I use a Probe also and this compare favorably to it.

Comments about Oceanic Oceanic Islander BC, Black/Blue:

I was very hesitant to purchase this BCD because I wanted something that could be used not only in warm water, but also in the Puget Sound (45-55 F). So far I've put ten dives with, 6 in the Puget Sound and 4 in Hawaii. I have a medium sized BCD and it holds up to 26 lb, exactly what I needed when wearing a two-piece 7mm wetsuit, 7mm gloves, 5mm hood, socks, 1mm vest and 5 mm booties (I'm 5'09"; 157 lb). It worked well for both shore and boat dives. Sometimes you'll need to tilt/move a bit, so the air gets uniformly distributed in the BCD. I should also say that it worked quite well in an emergency ascend I had to perform from 55 ft (strong currents and 3ft vis) after a 106 ft dive (guess where!). 12 lb were enough for me when wearing a 5mm wetsuit in Hawaii. If you're moderately built you can use this compact BCD for both warm and cold water.

Great basic non cluttered BCD

Best Uses:
Recreation, travel

Bottom Line:

Comments about Oceanic Oceanic Islander BC, Black/Blue:

I purchased this BCD for my girlfriend as I have had one for a couple of years and find it perfect for single tank diving. It's well made, simple, uncluttered (especially if you integrate your alternate air with your inflator).... The BCD just works well, that said I have not dived a wide variety of BCD's to compare to, and also I prefer rear inflation as opposed to jacket style. If I had to pick something for improvement, I'd say possibly it could have slightly larger pockets, BCD's are a personal choice, but I highly reccomend at least trying the Islander

Service & Delivery comments:

Excelent as always, your service rocks (and I'm hard to please).

Good for travel, but not much else
By Scott from Santa Rita, Guam on 8/3/2007
Pros:
Comfortable, Easily Adjustable
Cons:
Lack of D rings, Lack of lift, Tank strap
Best Uses:
Recreation, travel
Describe Yourself:
Beginner, Recreational Diver
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Oceanic Oceanic Islander BC, Black/Blue:

Small, lightweight BC. Good for travel, but not well suited for anything beyond that. No D-rings, only 2 caribiners.
The lack of D rings limits growth potential ( less room for primary light, safety gear, reel ).
On the plus side, very comfortable, small and lightweight.
Not much lift however at only 29 lbs, and the one tank strap is poorly configured/placed. The slack from the cumberbund feeds out and is bundled right where your tank WOULD come in contact with the rubber gripping area, however, because I had to take in the waist, my tank barely made contact with the rubber...my tank DROPPED out of my BC twice...once IN the water.

Comments about Oceanic Oceanic Islander BC, Black/Blue:

I am a reef fish ecologist and use this BCD for research and recreation on the weekends. I would recommend this BCD to anyone. It has lasted well through day-after-day use. I have never been a fan of weight-integration systems because I've never been able to find a good balance. However, this BCD has really simple and convenient weight integration and it balances just fine. It allowed me to kick the weight belt habit completely.
