I still have the two I was issued in the service. The bigger glass one that I keep in my emergency pack for my plane and my smaller plastic mirror that I keep in my BC pocket.
The great thing about these mirrors is that they have a clear dot in the center to aim surrounded by a ground glass screen that let you see where the "sun-cat" will be in the sky. You can accurately put it on a boat, an aircraft or an observer on the beach with fair precision then wiggle it just enough to really get their attention. Like all mirrors you will have an easier time signaling observers that are between you and the sun. As they pass 90 degrees it gets progressively more difficult and past 140 degrees it's almost impossible to flash with much precision.
Yes the clear plastic covering over the mirror will scratch but who cares...you're just trying to make a flash. As far as hazy days go, of course it won't work as well. Guess what, it works even worse at night. For pete's sake it's a mirror!!!

In a cloudy day, this device is not that easy to operate. The mirror surface is also easily scratched.

I had learned how to use this in military survival school, but my wife is having difficulty getting the hang of it
